from the SUPERINTENDENT

Dear Parents and Guardians, Our first quarter of the year is complete! Students have all gone through their first

project cycle and are more comfortable with the high expectations we have for all EKA students. We know you are as pleased as we are to see their academic growth already this

year. The school is also in the middle of the accreditation process through Advanc-Ed. You

can find out more about accreditation by going directly to their website at http://www.advanc-ed.org/. Students must attend an accredited high school in order to attend

most four-year universities, so this is very important to our school and students. Currently, we need your help in the accreditation process. You have been sent a link to a Parent

Satisfaction survey by email or you can access it through our website at http://www.ekacademy.org/news/. If you do not have the password, please call the front office at 702-870-5032. The anonymous results go directly to Advanc-Ed and they use that

information to grade us on our continual improvement program. All schools must strive for continual improvement to educate students the best way the can. Please take a few

moments and complete the survey. We are required to have a steep level of parent participation to retain our accreditation and your support is greatly appreciated. Our staff and all students have been given their own surveys to complete as well. All of this

information along with our internal review and report will help us to remain an accredited K-12 school. EKA has been an accredited institution since 2006.

Finally, a reminder that the weather is changing and that now is when our lost and found bins run over with items needed in the morning, but discarded in the afternoon. Please

make sure your students’ outerwear is labeled so that it can be found again!

Sincerely,

Ms. Mattson

Infinite Campus Update

EKA continues to learn about better ways to use Infinite Campus. We have discovered though that the Parent Portal is not as current as the Student Portal when it comes to student grades and

reporting. The Parent Portal is only updated every few weeks, but the Student Portal updates in real time, when advisors enter or change grades. For more accurate updates, please have your

students in grades 1-12 log into their portal for you. We are starting to practice doing this at school, so ask your student if they have had the opportunity yet.

Stay connected with our Facebook page and keep up to date on all the things going on at EKA.

from the Elementary Principal Parents and Students,

At EKA, we take pride in offering our families numerous opportunities to access our curriculum at home. As you are aware, one piece of that is the Reading Wonders package that students may use while at home. This can be done on a tablet, PC, or Apple product. I encourage parents and students to sit down together and navigate through the opportunities the Reading Wonders package offers through the ConnectEd site. There are games, anthologies, and readers that students can use to practice what they are learning in class.

Families must login through connected.mcgraw-hill.com. Students will then need to enter their login and password to pull up all of the content their advisors have assigned them. The login is their first name followed by last initial with .1415 at the end. (example - Sue Jones would be suej.eka1415). The student password is eka followed by a two or three digit number followed by eka. (example - eka56eka). Some students in first grade may also have been given a login/password containing images.

If you are having any difficulties, please email me [email protected] or the student's reading advisor.

from the Secondary Principal We have had a busy October at the Secondary Building. We are continuing the seminar classes every other Friday that students are in. (If they are in a 3-session seminar, they will start a new 3-session seminar at the beginning of November. 6-session seminars continue until the end of semester in December.) EKA Secondary campus also had 65 students go to the Shriners Hospitals Open for Children P.G.A. Tour event and did community service as standard bearers. These students put in two full days at the event on October 16 & 17, 2014. The tournament organizers have come back to our school year after year to provide this service for them (EKA has done this for the past 8 years). We are continuing projects in Advisory classes as well as Science classes. Parent/Teacher conferences were also held on October 27, 2014. The Super Scary Shindig (dance) was held at the secondary campus from 6-8:30 P.M. on October 30, 2014. The end of our first quarter was October 17, 2014.

NHS/NJHS raised over $100 during the Snow Cones for a Snow Leopard fundraiser. They will be using the funds to sponsor a snow leopard at a zoo.

“Work First, Then Play. The playing is more fun AFTER you work .” A quote from Mr. Webster:

Parents, ALL teacher email addresses are posted in the front office.

Cross Country finished their season and Diamond M.

placed 2nd among all girls! Congrats!

Basketball is next! If you are wanting to lace up and get on the court, make sure that you pick up a registration

packet from the front office and return it by NOVEMBER 14th!

Seminars have proven to be a great time! We have model rockets being launched and murders being solved. We have cakes being decorated and pieces of artwork being created. Titanic goers are sinking deep into the story of the big ship’s story and are looking forward to a field trip they will be taking to see more of what they have been learning about. There is a lot of awesome stuff going on during seminars and the students have done a great job of fully participating.

Also, let this be a friendly but

serious reminder that if you have not paid for your seminar, you need to do so before close of

business on November 7.

Be sure to check the display case in the Building C lobby to see what some of your

students have been working on in class.

Shout out to Hodiah W. for receiving a Be Kind

award for lending a helpful hand to a teacher

during lunchtime. Thanks for being kind!

Collette Buck’s Senior Project is on making

writing exciting for young students. She has a monthly writing club with guest speakers, such as slam poets and screen writers, that come in and work with students to do fun creative writing activities. Colette also will work with one class of 8th grade English students next semester to help make their English work more exciting.

The writing club will meet from 3:45pm to 4:45pm in Ms. Twardzik's advisory. The monthly club dates are: 1. November 12th 2. December 10th 3. January 14th 4. February 11th 5. March 11th 6. April 15th

Volume 6, Issue 3: K-12 Information

Jonathan V. Senior Project Jonathan has chosen to do his senior project on ‘Leaving Your Legacy’. He is inviting all students, K-12, to be a part of the project, which is to build a tile “wall”

that will include every student and staff member at EKA. Each student will paint a 6X6 inch tile that represents who they are and/or the legacy they hope to leave behind for the future EKA students. These tiles will then be placed on the wall in the multi-purpose room for others to view.

“All Fired Up,” a local business, has agreed to assist with this project by providing paint, kiln, tiles and labor to help make this project affordable for each student/staff. Understanding that not every student will be able to pay the $10.00 fee, he is asking for the EKA community as well as our local community to help sponsor this project so that no student will be left out..

This project offers a variety of sponsorship methods to suit your budget, for example:

Sponsorship of individual students ($10.00 X # of students you would like to sponsor)

Cash Donation ($____ towards sponsorship of the overall project)

Expert Labor (Consultant or volunteer labor with mounting of the tile walls)

Supplies (Wood trim, tile adhesive, utility knife, tile cutter, etc.)

All donations are greatly appreciated. Checks can be made out to “Explore Knowledge Academy.” Please write “Vivas Senior Project” on the memo line.

If you would like more information, please email [email protected]

Skyler Morales Senior Project For Skyler’s senior project, he has chosen to work with the

Clark County Wetlands Park to help clean up and remove

invasive species. For the 2014- 2015 season, the Wetlands

Hands On (WHO) is trying to clean up more trash than last

year. They were able to remove over 10,000 pounds of trash

last year alone. He also wants to exceed their goal for

removing 300,000 square feet of invasive plants from

Wetlands Park!

The importance of the Wetlands Park is for the

purification to our water. Without the Wetlands, we

wouldn't have clean running water for washing our

hands, doing dishes, taking a shower, etc.

The Wetlands Park has been neglected and it would be

greatly appreciated if Skyler could get help from his fellow

students and their families in cleaning the Wetlands. All

ages are welcome, if a parent or guardian is present. This is

a great way to connect with family, friends, and your

community, and do something that benefits everyone.

If you would like to sign up or need more information,

please see Skyler Morales in Mrs. Kinoshita’s advisory, or

email [email protected] .
