PROGRAMS

El Camino Real Charter High School offers a variety of programs designed for students with specific interests and/or other post-secondary education goals. Students should speak with their counselor to learn what requirements must be met and maintained in order to be scheduled into one of these programs. AVID (Achievement Via Individual Determination) This program offers students academic and motivational support while preparing them for college eligibility. An AVID elective course is taken each year to prepare students in the development of writing, language and collaborative problem-solving skills. It provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships and develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination. The goal of this program is to have every AVID student apply to a four-year college.

Humanitas This program consists of three college-prep classes at each grade level that work together to build academic skills and make connections between the content areas. Our project-based curriculum prepares students for success in college and beyond. Please visit https://ecrhumanitas.net to learn about the Humanitas program.

STEAM (Science + Technology + Engineering + Art + Math) Students in the STEAM program take a preset group of courses to build a strong foundation in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. These include biology, math (either Algebra 1 or Geometry, depending on math ability), Introduction to Technology/Digital Media, Design Craft, and English 9. The STEAM program has an honors and a college preparatory track, with both focusing on A-G requirements. Starting in 10th grade, STEAM participants will have the choice to focus on biomedical, technology/engineering, or environmental themes, within the STEAM program.

Art & Design This unique program provides students with the academic and technical preparation necessary to pursue high-skill, high-demand careers in the growing industries of art and design. The fashion design courses are designed to train students who are pursuing a career in fashion design and manufacturing. Students study all aspects of the industry, from operational procedures, management, and merchandising to patternmaking for apparel design and garment alteration and repair. The highlight of the fashion design program is the annual fashion show, where each advanced-level student is asked to design and construct his or her own fashion line.

VAPA The new Visual and Performing Arts Academy is a small learning community for students who would like to enhance their high school experience through their art disciplines. VAPA students will be expected to take at least one VPA course each year. Through the support of their counselors and teachers, they will receive guidance in applying to arts-based college programs. The academy culminates in a senior year showcase themed around using art as a vehicle for change.

Careers in Entertainment Academy (CEA) This is a four-year, internationally recognized program where students acquire artistic and technical skills in all aspects of film and television production, in order to prepare them for a professional career in the entertainment industry. The following is a breakdown of the courses of the program:

• Filmmaking 1AB - includes 1 semester of Film History and 1 semester of beginning Film Production. In Film Production students acquire creative and technical skills necessary to produce their own 4 minute short film as well as a 6 minute group narrative film. In Film History, students learn how the Art of Cinema was created and analyze the contributions made by the early masters. The study of famous directors, cinematographers, editors, and productions designers provide the emphasis for recognizing and explaining genre, tone, and shot composition. Technical advancements in film techniques are charted throughout history and their contributions to modern day cinema are analyzed. Students acquire the basic skills necessary to produce their own group narrative films.

• Broadcasting – ECReality is a bi-monthly news format web series that includes school news as well as community events produced by and featuring our students.

• Juniors and Seniors may choose to stay in Broadcasting, or they may move to Intermediate Filmmaking 2AB (11th grade), and Film Production/Advanced Film (12th grade.) Both intermediate and advanced classes work in all film departments to produce 7-15 minute narrative films. Completed films are entered in prestigious national and international film festivals.

FAQ Do I have to take the College and Career Readiness (CCR) class? College and Career Readiness is a one semester class taken as the counterpart of Health. Although it is not a high school graduation requirement, 9th grade students are required to take this class unless certain honors classes or classes from specific programs such as CEA, Humanitas, or AVID prevent it from fitting into their schedule. Do I have to take Intro to Computers? “I already took a computer class in 8th grade.” Students need 5 credits of a computer course to graduate from El Camino Real Charter High School. Although we do offer other computer courses, 9th graders are typically placed in Intro to Computers, as it is a prerequisite to most of the more advanced computer courses. Is Health a graduation requirement? Am I allowed to take Health over summer? Yes, Health is a graduation requirement. Some 9th graders may be allowed to take Health during the summer if their schedule does not allow it during the regular semester due to honors courses or if you are participating in a program (AVID, STEAM, etc….) that doesn’t leave room for it. Your counselor will determine if you are eligible. Can I sign up for a different summer school class? Some students may take Health if they meet certain criteria which would be determined by their El Camino counselor. There is also an AP Bridge class offered for those who may potentially be interested in AP classes in the future. We also offer a Summer Transition/Bridge Program, which includes a mathematics course and a study/literacy skills course, to help ease the transition from middle school to high school. Your counselor will determine if these classes are appropriate for you. Can I take a zero period? Not all classes are offered during zero period. Most of the classes offered are 11th and 12th grade classes. So generally, 9th graders do not take zero period. Can freshmen take AP classes? We do not offer AP classes to 9th graders. AP classes are offered to students in grades 10 - 12 and must have an ECR teacher/counselor approval. Can I take honors classes? We do offer honors classes to incoming 9th graders; however, each student’s schedule is individualized and created based on previous grades, history of honors classes in middle school, and other criteria unique to each student. Your counselor will help you decide which level of class is appropriate for you. Can I take Honors Algebra 2 in 9th grade? Students who took Algebra 1 and Geometry in middle school and passed with grades of A’s or B’s will be programmed into Algebra 2 in 9th grade. At the end of the spring semester, the math department chairs will offer a placement test for Honors Algebra 2. The date of the placement test will be announced in the student’s middle school math class towards the end of 2nd semester.

(over)

Will I need to take PE for all four years of high school? Students need to pass four semesters of PE to graduate high school. In addition, you must pass the Physical Fitness Test (PFT). Although the Physical Fitness Test itself is not a graduation requirement, you will be required to take PE every semester until you have passed it (even if you have completed your required four semesters.) What are “A - G” requirements? Is there a difference between these requirements and high school graduation requirements? A - G requirements are specific college entrance requirements. These are not the same as the general high school graduation requirements for El Camino Real Charter High School. Please visit the college office page of our website at http://ecrchs.net/college-office/college-option/a-g-requirements/ to learn more about A - G requirements and other valuable college readiness information. May I choose my teachers? I’ve heard great/bad things about this specific teacher! Students are NOT allowed to pick their teachers. This is school policy. According to the same policy, we also do not allow teacher changes. We encourage students to go into their class ready to learn and gain their own experiences with their teachers. May I choose my counselor? Counselors are assigned by last name. There are two exceptions; students who are in AVID or ESL will be assigned to Ms. Paniagua regardless of last name, and students with IEPs will be assigned to Mr. Perry regardless of last name. Counselors may not be changed or requested. I am a parent. How can I monitor my student’s grades and attendance? Parents and students will be given a code to access Aeries. Aeries is a parent/student portal that allows parents access to students’ gradebooks and attendance. We encourage you to closely monitor your student’s attendance and grades. Communication between teachers and parents is very important for student success. You may contact the Counseling Office at El Camino Real Charter High School for any other questions you may have.
