El Greco is one of the few old master painters who enjoys widespread popularity

El Greco was born in 1541,in Crete, which was at that time part of the Republic of Venice, and the center of Post-Byzantine art.

Two certain examples survive, El Greco received his initial training as an icon painter of the Cretan school,

He moved to Venice in 1567 (Crete was a Venetian territory).

During his stay in Italy, El Greco enriched his style with elements of Mannerism and of the Venetian Renaissance

The Modena Triptych is 1568 triptych (three panel painting) by the artist El Greco, who was also known as Doménikos Theotokópoulos.

From Venice, El Greco moved to Rome, where he worked from 1570 to 1576.

El Greco's most celebrated painting, The Burial of Count Orgaz,

It honors a long-dead benefactor, at whose funeral Saints Stephen and Augustine were seen to miraculously appear to assist in the burial. The picture depicts this miracle as well as the count's soul being received into Paradise.

"Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος (Doménicos Theotocópoulos) ἐποίει." The words El Greco used to sign his paintings. El Greco appended after his name the word "epoiei" (ἐποίει, "he made it"). In The Assumption the painter used the word "deixas" (δείξας, "he displayed it") instead of "epoiei".

What seems to have attracted him to El Greco was the latter's courage to be different, his genius, pessimism , denial of hope and fear .

He frequently refers to the famous El Greco painting Toledo in Storm (generally known as View of Toledo). He seems attracted to the surrealistic distortion of form in El Greco's work, and this paintings dark and elongated features emphasize the general pessimistic sense of human existence which Kazantzakis has.
