The cuatro, Venezuela's cultural heritage, is a four-string, wooden musical instrument of far-off origin. It arrived in Venezuela concurrently with the earlier conquerors. It is totally hand-made. Some families have devoted for generations to manufacturing. For such purpose, they use cedar and pine.Lara state is the herald in this matter; the most valuable cuatros come from there. Formerly an accompanist, this musical instrument was promoted to the rank of soloist.Since then the cuatro has become Venezuela's national instrument, lending its distinctively high and tinny sound to every style of music there: joropo, castillan, bambuco, golpe, polo, galeron, merengue. Usually, the back and face of the cuatro are made of pine and the sides of cedar. Because the instrument is small, it requires a soft, light wood shaved very thin to bend around the sharp curves of the box. This makes the instrument light and fragile.The frets separating the notes used to be made of bamboo, and the strings of porcupine or cat gut, but now it's steel frets, like those on the guitar.El cuatro, instrumento tipico venezolano, tiene cuatro cuerdas, esta hecho de madera y su origen es lejano. Vino a Venezuela conjuntamente con los primeros conquistadores. Es totalmente manufacturado. Algunas familias se han dedicado con devocin por generaciones a su manufactura para la cual utilizaron Cedro y pino.El estado Lara es el lder en esto, los cuatro mas valiosos provienen de ah. Hecho para acompaar, este intrumento musical fue promovido a la categora de Solista.Desde que el cuatro se convirti en el intrumento nacional, ofrece su pequeo y alto sonido distintivo a cada estilo musical: joropo, castillan, bambuco, golpe, polo, galeron, merengue. Usualmente, la espalda y la cara del cuatro estn hechas de pino y los lados de cedro. Debido a que es pequeo, se requiere de madera suave y ligera cortada muy fina para curvarla y dar la forma curva caracterstica de la caja. Esto hace que el instrumento sea ligero y fragilEl trasto que separa las notas es hecho en bamboo y las cuerdas de puercoespn o tripa de gato, pero ahora se hacen en metal y nylon como en las guitarras.
