Million-dollar jackpots. We’ve got that. Blackjack, Live Card Craps, and Mystery Card Roulette. We’ve got that, too. It’s all here, spread out over two levels, including one floor entirely dedicated to non-smoking action. Plus an all-new Non-Smoking Live Poker Room, five fantastic restaurants, free valet, covered parking, and the friendliest service around.

All that, day after day and night after night. It’s no wonder – This is where Sacramento gambles.

Must be 21 or older to gamble. The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians and Lakes Entertainment, Inc. invite you to play responsibly. If you think you have a gambling problem, call 800-GAMBLER.

amino was originally a lumber mill townand had a reputation as the Sugar Pinecapital of logging. The mill railroad lines are

no longer in use, but their gradual grades are nowthe domain of happy hikers who use the ElDorado Trail system from Placerville to Camino.Camino is most known for being the home of theApple Hill® Growers and its 55 members. Eventhough fall is considered the “high season”, someranches are open all year. The season begins withiris blooms in May and continues with blueberries andassorted other berries in June, July and August. Deliciousstone fruit is ripe and available from July throughSeptember when pears and apples begin to ripen. Thefamous area bakeshops begin creating fruit delicacies at thesame time and continue through pumpkin and Christmastree seasons.

The Pollock Pines area has a rich history that began

when westward immigration brought gold seekers into thispart of California via the Mormon Immigrant Trail. Thiscolorful and unhurried route begins south of Pollock Pinesand is one gateway to vast areas of the Eldorado NationalForest.

History also raced through this part of the county whenyoung men on fast horses delivered the mail and newsbetween St. Louis and San Francisco on the Pony Express.

14 El Dorado County Visitors’ Guide & Farm Trails Map – 2010-2011 www.visit-eldorado.com

Placerville is a charming California “gold rush” townnamed after the placer gold deposits found in its riverbeds and hills between Spanish Ravine and the town

plaza in the late 1840s.Placerville’s treasuredheritage is reflected inthe historical, 19thcentury architecture ofits downtown core.

During the gold rush,Placerville became animportant supply centerfor the surroundingmining camps.Placerville was alsoknown as “Hangtown”in its early days.Although many storiesexist on how this namewas acquired, the most famous story involved a colorfulevent that occurred in January of 1849 involving three menaccused of murder and robbery. With no more evidencethan that, a short 30 minute trial took place and aunanimous “guilty” verdict was given. The crowd demandedthat the men be sentenced to “death by hanging” and therest was history. Throughout history, several famousentrepreneurs have conducted business on Main Street.Phillip Armour (meat packer), Mark Hopkins (railroadfinancier), John Studebaker (auto maker), and SnowshoeThompson (mail-carrier through the Sierra) were amongthe well-known shopkeepers on Main Street.

Today, the town is a peaceful blend of old and new thatoffers something for everyone. Pioneers, artists, gold-miners

and entrepreneurs have called it home. Animportant historic landmark that still remains onMain Street is the Bell Tower. This tower haswatched Placerville’s history pass beneath it forwell over 100 years. Today it proudly stands as a

monument to honor our city’s volunteer firemen and agathering place for local celebrations and special events.

His Vision: I wanted to be a cowboy in the worstway when I was a kid,” Wiser said. Part of hisattraction to the lifestyle was the “cowboy creed,”which promotes honesty, hard work, chivalry andgood deeds. Wiser’s adherence to these principleshas won him many admirers. As one resident put it“…he is part of the identity of our historical town. He’s a historical icon.”

Our strength of character today: Wiser’sdistinct look and love of all things Old West havemade him something of a celebrity in the county. He strolls the streets in old-time cowboy garb, offering free stagecoach rides down Placerville’shistoric Main Street and taking part in just aboutevery historical re-enactment that includes a horse.

Certificate of Authenticity: “When I came to ElDorado County, my childhood dreams began tocome true,” Wiser said.

It is difficult to travel anywhere and not find someone thathas heard of Poor Red’s in the historic town of El Dorado. The building has been a lot of things; A Wells Fargo gold

depository, an apothecary and a brothel. But the colorfulhistory of Poor Red’s does not stop there. Just like a storyout of the old west, it is saidthat Harry P. “Red” Sadler wonthe title to the business in 1948in a dice game with theprevious owner. When thename changed to Poor Reds in1954, it was on its way tobecoming a hub for Gold Rushhistory. Painted on the walls aremurals with prospectors,Chinese, stagecoach stops andbattling miners depicting theearly Gold Rush town of MudSprings when it still existed.

From the day it opened, Poor Red’s has been an“experience,” partly because of the restaurant but mostlybecause of the bar. A photograph of the founders Red and

Opal Sadler, known as “Poor Red and Rich Opal” hangsnear the entrance to the restaurant. The napkins used tofeature a drawing of Opal all gussied up in jewels and furswhile Red looked, well, poor, with his pockets turned insideout. Change is given in Susan B. Anthony silver dollars and

the two level horseshoe bar is made forcruising new arrivals. Poor Red’s is worldfamous for its Gold Cadillac, an alcoholiclibation created by Frank Cline, a formerPoor Red’s bartender. He claimsinspiration for the creamy concoction camefrom visiting honeymooners who drove aCadillac in the 1950s. Gold Cadillac’s are ablended drink of Galliano liqueur, half andhalf, White Cream de Cacao and ice. In1994 Poor Red’s was honored by Gallianoas the single largest consumer of the

beverage in the Western Hemisphere andtoday accounts for 3% market for the product.

Poor Red’s had not changed much since those early years. You’ll still find dice games, Gold Cadillacs and you’lldefinitely have a story of your own to tell when you visit.

In 1848 James Marshall discovered Gold inColoma. Today visitors continue to discovergold as the Coloma Valley area has become

a world-class vacation destination for outdoorenthusiasts.

The area that lies north of U.S. Highway50, between the Middle and South Forks ofthe American River is often referred to as“The Divide” by its residents. It covers 412square miles and has a population ofapproximately 13,400.

The recreational opportunities arenumerous in both the Valley and the Divide.Hiking, horseback riding, camping, mountain biking, wine tasting, tubing, kayaking and white water rafting are justsome of the activities in the area. Duringthe summer months it is easy to find acompany offering guided river trips frommild to wild on the stunning South Fork ofthe American River. Because of the river’s

Historic Highway 49 runs right through The MarshallGold Discovery State Historic Park. It is open year roundand features a replica of the original sawmill where gold wasfirst found. Learn about the California Gold Rush at themuseum or enjoy a few character actors milling about thePark providing authentic demonstrations such asblacksmithing, gold panning and even quilting! For a smallfee, children can even try out gold panning keepingwhatever they find.

Downtown Georgetown (pop: 962) looks much as it didlong ago with its wide streets and historic buildings. Thepeople living here are truly far away from the hustle andbustle of city life. But once a year, in July, 15,000 peoplenationwide descend upon the Divide for the JeepersJamboree. They come with their jeeps to ride the RubiconTrail in the El Dorado National Forest to test their drivingskills in this rocky and challenging terrain.

Cool received its own share of national attention duringthe Amgen Tour of California in May. The natural scenicbeauty combined with the 1,500-foot ascent along windingHighway 49 positioned Cool as an ideal viewing area forthe world-class event.

Bassi FallsPollock Pines, Eldorado National Forest

If you have not seen Bassi Falls at peak flow, youabsolutely have to make the trip out to see it. BassiCreek hurtles 109 ft. over a granite cliff, crashing

over and through many large rocks. It is simply anawesome display of power and force. It is an easy 10minute walk from the parking area to the falls. There isnow an official, maintained trail leading to Bassi Falls. It is very easy to follow, though once the trail reachesan open area, it becomes indistinct crossing over thegranite rock. A line of rocks has been made so it isfairly easy to continue following the trail to thewaterfall. This is a fairly popular area, so you probablywon't be alone here, unless you come during the week.Sunset is certainly the best time to visit and photographBassi Falls, as you will get the warm light shining on thefalls at the end of the day. In the morning, the suncomes up right behind the falls and hits it early. Thishike is perfect for beginners, kids and dogs!Directions: From Hwy #50 about 20 miles east of Placerville, turn left (north) onto Ice House Rd (Forest Road3). Drive 15.9 miles on Ice House Rd. to Union Valley Reservoir. Turn right onto an unmarked dirt road (Road12N32A), just after crossing the bridge over Big Silver Creek (opposite Big Silver group camp). Drive 0.2 milesto a junction and turn left. Then drive 0.8 miles to another junction and turn right. Drive another 0.7 miles tothe trailhead at the end of the road (total 1.7 miles along the dirt road).

Dutch Creek FallsColoma, Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park

In the wet season, Dutch Creek Falls is a beautiful 112 ft.waterfall in Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Parkin Coloma. The trail to Dutch Creek Falls is now

publicly accessible on state park land. There is no parkingalong Bayne Road. Cars may legally park near the bridge onMt. Murphy Road. Purchase a parking pass at the museum. The trail is easy to follow alongDutch Creek. You can't see the creek from the trail until you get closer to the falls. Afterabout 3/4 mile hiking, you will see the lower falls on Dutch Creek. This one is 24 ft. high, and it’s possible to get down to the base of the falls. After seeing this first waterfall there aretwo beauties where Johntown Creek and Dutch Creek come together. Both are quite big (97ft. and 112 ft.). It is stunningly beautiful. It’s dangerous to get close to these falls due to thesteep and slippery terrain. The trail does continue above Johntown Creek Falls, and there isone more 60 ft. waterfall shortly above this main drop on Johntown Creek. This is one hikeyou will definitely want to do in the winter months when the creeks are flowing well. Watchfor poison oak, especially in the winter when it cannot be easily seen as it is not in leaf. Inthe spring, there are wildflowers along the trail and Murphy Mountain has a beautifuldisplay of poppies. Directions: From Hwy 49 in Coloma, turn east on Mt. Murphy Rd., drive across the bridge. Turn right on BayneRd., and drive 0.5 miles to the trailhead on the left. But note there is no parking at the trailhead. There is a $8parking fee, which must be paid at the museum.

The Character: Anthony Mansour, Chairman, CEO, of the Mansour Company

His Story: From the moment he saw the gently undulating terrain of El Dorado Hills in 1979,real estate investor Anthony Mansour knew he'd found a rural treasure. Within hours of seeingthe land, he wrote a personal check for a deposit of $50,000 for the 7,500 acres that were forsale that day, and for which he and his business partners would ultimately pay $8.5 million. From that day forward his dream began to take shape.

His Vision: The Mansour vision has provided El Dorado Hills with something that many newer communities lack, a realdowntown. His plan revolved around a central, main shopping street, with supporting businesses on the outskirts of theshopping center; it is a gathering spot and center of a bustling town.

Our strength of character today: Tony’s vision, passion, and love of European villages, complete with timelessbuildings and a homey main street, brought the El Dorado Hills Town Center to life!

Certificate of Authenticity: “We are three generations now. Maybe my grandson will be working on this someday. When you talk about two or three generations working on one project, it’s about more than just making money.”
