    Superman Returns (PG)

    By ROBERT WALDMAN

Be prepared to be swept o your eet.Chances are that those who grew up in the 70sor 50s remember either Christopher Reeves orGeorge Reeves as the quintessential Superman

at the movies or on t.v. Not any more. Fromout o nowhere unknown commodity BrandonRouth should sets hearts racing as the man osteel in the newly minted Warner BrothersSuperman Returns. Long line-ups will greetboth the curious and thrill seekers at theParamount, The Ridge, Esplanade 6, EmpireStudio 12, Colossus and Silver City Theatresaround B.C.

Mega director Bryan Singer (X-Men) hada lielong dream to direct a Superman ickand passed on the recent Vancouver X-Menmovie. Correct decision. Singer puts orth asensational two and a hal hour adventure

that boasts outstanding casting, an engagingstory and state o the art special eects thatwill make you believe a man can y (and cry!).

Singer wisely plays up the D.C Comic bookheros tradition as we see early on how ayoung boy somewhere in the Midwest took upresidence at the Kent arm and grew in stature, strength and speed. Flashbacks cleverly set thestage or the return o Superman ater a veyear absence to Metropolis. Slight problemsoccur in a delay o that length including aaded romance and a criminal chomping atthe bit or revenge.

Under normal circumstances thesemotivators are commonplace but here we haveproblems o monumental proportions. Goodold master end Lex Luthor has new designson creating chaos that involve the slaying oSuperman while Lois Lane retreats to her newound husband and son. Leave it to Clark Kentto nd more nuances o a aded love and evenmore dangerous suspicions about Lex Luthor.

Innocence abounds in Superman Returns.Fresh ace Brandon Routh, most recently seenin the Canadian biopic shocker Karla, ts thecape like a glove and is sensational as both themeek minded Clark Kent and the ight happySuperman. Next in line to short-shit our hero

in a part just as good, i not better, than theupholder o all things right is Kevin Spacey(L.A. Condential) who smoulders as the nattilyattired balding end Lex Luthor. Ham nevertasted so good during these conrontationsbetween good and evil e.

Women play central gures in this movie.Blonde bombshell Kate Bosworth (Beyondthe Sea) gives innocence a second coming asstreet smart proessional reporter Lois Lanewhile Parker Posey proves that even villainsneed some comic relie as Lexs main squeezeKitty Kowalski. Funnyman Kal Penn (VanWilder) gets caught up in all the commotion asa Luthor henchman whose plan is to somehowmanipulate the world through the power ocrystals. Strange as this plot is to comprehendvery clever writing makes the whole questplausible and engaging.

Very strong secondary charactersurther enhance this epic that boasts trulysuperior special eects. Time ies by in aash as we watch Superman try to reconnectwith Lois Lane with some truly great romanticundercurrents. Rounding out this treat are themen at the Daily Planet newspaper. BesidesClark Kents many missteps both members othe White amily prove to be good newsmenunder the guise o veteran Frank Langella(Dracula) and James Marsden (X-Men).

Fans o the old Superman moviesand television series will be thrilled with thisnew version that has an over the top crazedvillain, great tongue in cheek humor, a malelead destined or superstardom in what shouldbecome an updated series and a romanceto yearn or. Must see entertainment thatsully engaging, Superman Returns deliversa knockout punch. And that music will

    mesmerize you!

    The Devil Wears Prada (G)

    By ROBERT WALDMAN

Summertime is when the studiosrelease their big guns. Typically huge stars, special eects vehicles, juvenile hijinks andaction spectaculars rule supreme at the boxofce. Now and then the odd serious lm

is included just to shake things up in a bito counter programming. Sure to create abuzz among young crowds and adults wholike smart, topical comedy is The Devil WearsPrada, a resh start rom 20th Century Fox witha rst rate cast. Head on down to the runwayo The Paramount, the Fith Avenue CinemasEmpire Studio 12, Esplanade 6, Colossus andSilver City theatres around B.C. to get in on theact.

Being young and jobless is trying oanyone. Imagine the dilemma o a resh ouo college girl trying to nd work in New Yorkthe biggest jungle out there. Out to prove apoint and get a paycheck is mild manneredAndy Sachs. Nestled in a small abode withboyriend Nate the pair lead a rather humbleexistence. All this may change or good when ajob interview at an upscale ashion publicationturns into an unbelievable juggernaut ounexpected events.

Runway Magazine is the bible o theashion world. Or so insiders say. Led by theirrepressible Miranda Priestly the corporationis run like the army as opposed to a journalDreams o getting started in journalism havebeen a long-term goal o Ms. Sachs so whenshe accidentally alls into work at Runway shecant believe her good ortune. Little does oulittle miss out o her league Andy know whathit her.

Friends on the job are ew and abetween as Andy undergoes a crash coursein learning the biz rom a ew co-workersEveryone in the company lives in ear o MsPriestly so Andy learns the hard way what lieon the inside o a corporation is like with thereal boss rom hell as her mentor.

Smart, stylish, and ull o dynamic

perormances, The Devil Wears Prada is totallyentertaining whether youre a ashion houndor not. Terric casting makes this lm y othe screen, working both as a comedy, aromance and tale about overcoming obstaclesand learning about yoursel.

Young acting sensation AnneHathaway (The Princess Diaries) will againwalk away with hearts everywhere as the naveAndy Sachs, a girl whose out o her league inevery respect. Cast as the ultimate dragonlady is Academy Award winning actress MeryStreep (Out o Arica) who can do comedyand wickedness with the best o them. And

hows this or a supporting cast: Stanley Tucc(Shall We Dance) in yet another scene stealingpersona as Runway employee Nigel.

Romance ourishes in this comedyrunning hot and cold. Down time with Andyis typically reserved or the understated Natewhile hot shot ashion designer ChristianThompson only has eyes or the new girl. BothAdrian Grenier (Harts Way) and Simon Bake(The Ring Two) are a study in contrasts as loveinterests and each brings something dierentto the plate.

Seize the moment is a saying peopleshould live by. Not willing to take a chancecan be devastating. Lovers o all ages willbe able to relate to the sorry plight o twogrown adults trying to nd romance underrather unusual circumstances in The LakeHouse, a smart romance rom Warner BrothersFilms sure to cause a run on hankies. Smartplacement o this 99 minute aair amidst thesummer blockbusters suggests such counterprogramming rom the studio is on a winning

track at Vancouvers Tinseltown (on Pender,Free Parking), The Esplanade 6, Fith AvenueCinemas, Empire Studio 12, Colossus andFamous Silver City Theatres around B.C.

Coming out at the same timeas actioner The Fast and The Furious andslapstick comedy Nacho Libre The Lake Housetruly stands out as superior entertainment tothese somewhat lame disappointments. Heredirector Alejandro Agresti knows how to pushall the right buttons in this romance thatsmore personal than saga. Proper timing is akey ingredient or any romance and the maincharacters in The Lake House are just a touch

    o.Windy Chicago makes home to

two bright proessionals. Dr. Kate Forster is aworkaholic medical mainstay while Alex Wylerhails rom a long string o winning architects. One would think that this could be a possiblematch, as both are young, successul and havethat winning positive attitude. Unortunatelythey both are living in dierent worlds.

Time-wise Alex is living in the year2006 while Kate resides in 2004. How they meetis through the mail, quite literally. Broughttogether the pair share a common interest in ahome on the water and then correspond over

an 18 month gap by letter. Strange as this mayseem the way the writers have structured thestoryline makes sense and you do eel a senseo urgency as to whether the pair may actuallymeet or continue to miss each other.

Mainstream movie ans will knowthat Keanu Reeves (The Matrix) rst pairedwith the little known Sandra Bullock (MissCongeniality) in the runaway hit Speed morethan a ew years back. Lucky or them theystill have that chemical spark and both turn inpowerul, understated perormances as the ill-ated lovers. Canadian superstar ChristopherPlummer (The Sound o Music) lends hiscommanding presence as an aloo dad withEbon Moss-Bachrach (Stealth) looking like aperect brother to Keanu in this amily-drivenstory.

Shots at the lake are gorgeous withdreamy cinematography. Tight tension windsits way through this coming o age tale aspersonal relationships swirling around thereal-time lives o Alex and Kate add to thedilemma each aces in their quest to meet.

Romantic movies are hard to pull osuccessully. Sometimes humour is includedor sentimentality. In The Lake House we havean enchanting tale o real people trying toconnect despite a big lag in time. Surprisingly, somehow the creators here pull o a terriclittle romance that will keep onlookersintrigued throughout.

    Laszlo Kovcs Interview.

    Part III o III

JW: Who would you say were someo your avourite cinematographers, some o your biggest inspirations toyour work?LK: All the classic ones, you know. Welearn rom each other so much. (Devil-ishly) You STEAL rom each other.

JW: Who would you say that you stealthe most rom? (laughs)

LK: This was interesting, because thecritics said that Bogdanovich is steal-ing, but when somebody else is doingthe same thing, its an HOMAGE, notstealing. Its dierent, crazy.

JW: Its paying tribute. Youre showingyour respect through your cinematiclanguage.LK: Exactly! We studied the old mas-ters, the European masters. The Amer-ican masters. There are so many unbe-

lievable American cinematographersin the 30s, even beore in the silentera

JW: Howard Hawks, he was a great in-uence on not only mysel but manyothersLK: He was a great director, and GregToland (Citizen Kane) was everybodyshero. Unortunately he died so youngand he taught Orson Wellesin oneaternoon he was taught about cam-eras and lenses. He didnt have to goto cinema school. He understood. Andthey made an incredible cinematicclassic.

I also admire so many English andFrench lmmakers. Too many to name.Cinematographers are very strong butnobody sees the work because its be-hind the iron curtain. Its excitingitsnever a dull moment. Theres a cre-

ation that is always wonderul. Thevision, the composition, the camera

movement; that is what tells the story. The color compositions. The nitty-grit-ty things like what particular lenses orcameras...Its all instinct. Those thingsdont matter. Oh I gotta do this par-ticular shot, let me sit down and gureout what lens I should use.

JW: Even you said to me last night atthe party about aspect ratios, that itonly matters to a certain extentLK: It does matter, because its a di-erent ormat. The great masters like

Rohmer; sometimes they did verticalpictures, sometimes they did horizon-tal pictures, because thats what eltgood to express the mood and thestory. So, and the thing about cinema-tographers and cinematography, isthat we have to do all kinds and anykind o movies. Thats why were here. Its amazing because we do musicals, westerns, mysteries, actions, all that

stu. I personally never avouredaction movies or sci- pictures, but when I was on Ghostbusters,it was because I was curiousabout a visual eects movie. Itwas oered to me, and I had agreat experience. It was tough, very tough, and that was beorecomputer graphics. It was oneo the last optical visual eectsmovies.

JW: Would you say that Ghost-busters is the hardest lm thatyouve ever worked on?LK: No, each lm has dierentchallenges, dierent problems, and thats what you do. You workat solving those problems, and iyou have a good director to work

with that makes it even better tohave the collaboration. Its veryimportant. You are the closestcollaborator o the director. Not

just the right-hand; you are basi-cally his eyes too, an extensiono his eyes. I did six movies withBogdanovich, and we perectedour work so well that we didnteven have to talk! Just look ateach other, show a sketch, boom, okay I got it. And he said Do it,

and I said Im ready. Thats how good

    the experience was.

Whats really important, no matterwhat kind o lm you are making, you visually tell the story. Thats veryimportant. Thats the medium. Thatswhat the audience is going to seein the theatre; its not hearing it, itswatching it, and turning up the soundtrack really loud, you still know whatsgoing on. Thats the power o cinema. And it has to be taken very seriously.

Otro gran concierto-documental lmado enydney, Australia.
