Significant growth also occurred in the Midwest, where the Hispanic population grew by 49 percent. which was more than twice the growth of the total population in the West (14 percent). The Northeast’s Hispanic population grew by 33 percent, or 10 times the growth of the total population in the Northeast (3 percent).

States

More than half of the Hispanic population in the United States resided in just three states: California, Texas and Florida. Osceola County, FL - On Thursday, May 12, 2011, Osceola County Historical Society (OCHS) was presented with a check as the proud recipients of the Disney Helping Kids Shine Grant which was applied for earlier this year. The amount of the grant was undisclosed until the award was presented in person by Disney representative, Matt Thursam, to Osceola County Historical Society staff and board members. The event took place on the grounds of OCHS’s Pioneer Village and Museum, 750 N Bass Road, Kissimmee, 34746.Osceola County Historical Society is very thrilled

to be first-time recipients of this very competitive grant, and is looking forward to making the Summer Camp Program a success this year with the help of the $5,000 check which was received. OCHS partnered with the Osceola County Drug Court Program to be able to offer three week-long camp sessions over the summer to children, ages 5-12, whose parents are currently enrolled in the Drug Court Program curriculum. The idea of the partnership is to be able to provide several of these children with a safe, educational opportunity at no cost to their families during the summer break

tengan cuidado en el área que rodea a Settlers Trail y a que estén conscientes de trabajadores, peatones, ciclistas, y otros automovilistas. St. Cloud, FL – The City of St. Cloud Public Services staff announces that a portion of Settlers Trail (off of Old Canoe Creek Road) will be paved one day during the week of May 23. “This project is part of the

implementation of the City of St. Cloud’s ‘Twenty-Year Paving Plan,’” said City of St. Cloud Engineer III Kevin Felblinger. “Our contractor, APAC-Southeast, Inc., is estimating that that the work should only take one day to complete, depending on factors such as weather conditions.” In the first five years of the paving plan,

from 2011-2015, specific roadways needing utility upgrades will be identified,

neighborhoods will be prioritized by both age and current asphalt condition, and asphalt in the poorest condition will be placed in the first three years. The City of St. Cloud’s road program extends from the initial construction of roads to the ultimate restoration and rehabilitation of failing streets.Motorists are urged to use caution

surrounding the Settlers Trail area and to be aware of workers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and other motorists. Directional signs will be posted. For more details on this project, please call the Public Services Customer Service Line at (407) 957-7344.

On May 19, the dean of students contacted the school resource officer to make her aware rumors were circulating a student might have put a prescription medication into a teacher’s drink. On May 16, a teacher went home feeling sick. Prior

to being taken home, she told two other teachers she felt nauseous, dizzy and drowsy. After speaking with several students in the teacher’s class, school officials and the school resource officer confirmed Ortiz had put one of his prescribed medication pills, Clonidine, in the teacher’s drink. Deputies interviewed Ortiz who cooperated with the investigation. He admitted to detectives he put one of his prescribed pills, which he takes to help him sleep at night, in the teacher’s drink because she yelled at him in class.Based on the information, Ortiz was charged with

Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the employee who indicated she opened the door to let a white male enter the motel. He asked her several questions about renting a room and he left because he said he left his identification in his vehicle. A few minutes later, she let him back in the motel and he approached the counter. She thought he was getting his identification out of his wallet, but he pointed a handgun at her and demanded money. He left the motel on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. A perimeter was set, but patrol with the assistance of Aviation and K-9 Units were unable to locate the suspect.The suspect is described as a white male, approximately

5’9” wearing blue jeans with orange stitching on the pockets and a bright green shirt. He might also have a tattoo on the inside of his right arm.

Kissimmee, FL – Kissimmee police detectives are investigating a series of business burglaries where the suspects have entered vacant businesses to force entry into adjoining businesses through adjacent walls.On April 23, 2011, the Sprint Store located at 1001 W.

Vine Street in Kissimmee reported a burglary to their business. The suspects entered the store through a vacant adjacent store and were able to take multiple cell phones and other portable electronic devices.On April 30, 2011 the Perfume Paris located at 1491

E. Osceola Parkway in Kissimmee was burglarized. Employees discovered that holes had been cut in the walls from a vacant adjoining business giving the suspects access to the perfume supply. The suspects were able to remove a large quantity of perfume from the business.On May 15, 2011, a similar incident occurred at

the Radio Shack located at 1944 North John Young Parkway. In this case, the suspects were able to remove the safe from this location by entering through the adjacent wall of a closed business.

On May 21, 2011 the suspects gained access to a vacant business located at 2151 Columbia Avenue. From that vacant space they were able to go through the wall to 2149 Columbia Avenue, Cell Phone Outlet, and then into 2147 Columbia Avenue, Columbia Liquors. The suspects took merchandise including cell phones, perfume, and alcohol from the businesses. Detectives are currently looking for a white, possibly

Ford van, which has writing on the left rear door at the same level of the license plate. The van may be related to the burglaries.“We are working closely with our local business
