"There are things thatseem to be innocent, with-out knowing why we dothem. The Ouija board may be a fun game, but

the origin is evil," Avilasaid. "We cannot be par-ticipating in things thathave origins in evil, evenif they are fun. Fundoesn't make it fun."

Szosteck thinks that Hal-loween is taken out of context by many people.

"It's a fun thing. It's en-tertainment. When HarryPotter came out, there wasa big controversy, but it's

just entertainment. It's anove!," he said. "You canperceive it otherwise.That's what Halloween is- it's a fun time. I guessthat can be misconstrued

by certain people, but I .don't think that's an issue."

Adrian Garcia, leader of the children's ministry atMisi6n de Gracia, said it'sunderstandable that peo-ple want to use Halloweenas a way to have fun. Forthat reason, he said, festi-vals like the Festival of Light atMisi6n de Graciaare held so that kids havea safe place to have a good time.

"I understand that hav-ing a good time is alwaysfun, but to what extent doyou want to expose yourchildren to something thatis going to hurt them, ei-ther spiritually, or in thelong run, confuse their un- .

benefit their church, Car-mona said it is so that kidshave options and canchoose to not participate

in trick-or treating and other Halloween activities.

"If parents want to taketheir children out on thestreets, that's fine, but we

just want to give them an-other alternative," he said."Everything starts at ayoung age. It's very hard to go to a 14-year-old nowand tell them not to par-
