The industrial and aerospace town is carving out a niche as a lower-cost alternative for corporate relocations, including media firms.

El Segundo’s growth has leaned heavily on its tax credit program to lure businesses. The 40 percent credit, based on sales tax generated in one year, means that companies with 100 employees and 15,000 square feet of office space pay about $14,240 in annual tax for the first $15 million in receipts. By comparison, companies in the city of L.A. and Santa Monica pay $67,500 and $75,000 a year, respectively, according to an economic report published by the El Segundo city government.
