El Segundo United Methodist Church Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost/World Communion Sunday
October 4, 2020
Prelude “Ivory Palaces” (Henry Barraclough) Kenner Bailey
Welcome Rev. Lee Carlile Worshiping Together Darcey Kuhn and Bryan Wiese
One: On this World Communion Sunday, we come to Christ’s table, Many: to receive Christ in word and bread and cup, One: so that we, in turn, may offer Christ to others. Let us join together in praise!
Singing Together “The Church’s One Foundation” (verses 1-2, 5) (see below) Praying Together
God of all, thank you for this new day and for the life that we share with all Christians. Remind us once again of the hope that is ours in Jesus Christ and give us the courage to follow him every moment of our lives. In his name, Amen.
For the Children (at heart too!) The Word of God Philippians 3:4b-14
One: The Word of God for the people of God. Many: Thanks be to God!
A Word about the Word “Keep Calm and Carry on” Prayer of Confession
Redeemer God, though we joyfully praise Christ as the foundation of the church and the center of our lives, we do not always act as if that is so. Unlike Paul, our goals have little to do with our faith, and we seek meaning in our relationships with others instead of in our relationship with him. Yet, it is in Christ that we find our hope; it is through Christ that we receive salvation; and it is with Christ that we work for good in the world. Forgive us, O God, for those times when our faith is weak. Help us to draw strength from the truth that nothing in life or in death can separate us from your unfailing love. Like Paul, give us the courage to live as followers of Jesus, even as we press on toward the goal of resurrection—not just for ourselves, but for the whole world. In Christ’s name, Amen.
Silence Words of Assurance
One: By the grace of God in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Let us run the race of life with confidence and joy, trusting in the One who runs before, beside, and behind us.
Many: We will! Glory be to God!
Prayers of the Church
Sharing Our Gifts O God, we offer these gifts in thanks for all that You have given us. May we follow the “upward call” of Christ with confidence and courage. In his name we pray, Amen.
Singing Together “One Bread, One Body” (verses 1-2) (see below) The Great Thanksgiving (see below)
(At noon today, you are invited to come to the church, 540 Main Street, El Segundo, to receive the consecrated elements from Pastor Lee so that you can consume them at home. She will be in the church parking lot, which is accessed via the alley behind the church, off Mariposa. Please stay in your car and wear a mask.)
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
Singing Together “Gather Us In” (see below) Blessing Postlude “Cornet Voluntary” (John Travers) Patty Breitag

Our Vision Statement Following the example of Jesus Christ, El Segundo United Methodist Church
seeks to be a community of faith that embodies the love of God: • by reaching out and welcoming all, especially those on the margins of society;
• by creating a safe space in which all are supported on their faith journey; • and by serving the needs of the community and beyond.
Communion Responses (To be read during the Great Thanksgiving)
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts
We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise. [The pastor continues to pray.]
And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
[The pastor continues to pray.]
And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. [The pastor continues to pray.]
All honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and forever.
Amen.
