In the 330-page of The Ilocos Heritage (by Visitacion de la Torre), the

Ilocano legacy and the life of the Ilocano – are described as - "the browbeaten,

industrious, cheerful, simple soul who has shown a remarkable strain of

bravery and a bit of wanderlust."

The Ilocano history reveals his struggles and victories – in battles for

colonial independence from Spain and America, to Philippine leadership. The

Ilocano material culture and spirituality can be seen in the past - images of

Spanish santo , antique but intricate wooden furniture and quality local

fiber. The native Ilocano is a weaver and pottery carver  expert.

The Ilocano cuisine – ranges from the exotic "abu-os" (ant eggs) to

vegetable broth "dinengdeng" and "pinakbet" the sticky "tinubong" to the

"poqui-poqui" (eggplant salad).

Ilocandia is filled with colonial churches, the legacy of Spanish

Catholicism.

today.

A royal decree of February 2, 1818 separated Ilocos Norte from Ilocos

Sur, the latter to include the northern part of La Unión (as far as Namacpacan,

now Luna) and all of what is now the province of Abra. The sub-province of

Lepanto and Amburayan in Mt. Province were annexed to Ilocos Sur.

Gobernador Military y Politico. Isabella !! Of Spain decred its creation on April 18,

1854. In 1661, Andres Malong (Pangasinan) failed to recover La Union from the

Spaniards after the Agoo battle. In 1896, the people of La Union initiated the

In 1571, the Spanish conquest of Pangasinan began with an expedition

by the Spanish conquistador Martin de Goiti, who came from the Spanish

settlement in Manila through Pampanga. About a year later,, Juan de Salcedo,

sailed to Lingayen Gulf and landed at the mouth of the Agno River. Limahong, a

Chinese pirate, fled to Pangasinan after his fleet was driven away from Manila in

1574, he failed to establish a colony, as an army led by Juan de Salcedo chased

him out of Pangasinan after a seven-month siege.

By 1580, Pangasinan was made into an "Alcaldia Mayor" by the

Spanish Governor of the Philippines. Augustinian, Franciscan, and Dominican

missionaries arrived with the conquistadors and most of the inhabitants was

converted to Roman Catholic. In 1611, Pangasinan became a Spanish colonial

province, comprising the territories of Zamabale and some areas ofLa

Union andTarlac. Lingayen was made the capital of the province.
