The way Nobles figures, it’s the least he can do. “These are our kids that got hurt,” he says. “These are kids who still have their whole entire lives in front of them and have had to overcome some tremendous stuff.” A week later, Benson will gather again with a few friends at the Takoda Tavern to knock back a few whiskeys to mark the 10th an- niversary of the IED attack and celebrate the fact that he is alive and thriving. Despite the setbacks, Latseen Benson still manages to get the most out of life.

It was 2005 when Benson suddenly found himself a disabled military veteran with nothing to do but muddle through mental and physical trauma while trying his best to recover and recoup a sense of normalcy.

He had joined the Army two months after the 9/11 attacks, and four years after that he was gravely injured by an improvised explo-sive device — or IED — while on routine pa-trol in Iraq. Benson’s right leg was amputated above the knee, his left leg was taken below the knee, and he suffered other less severe but debilitating injuries, including the loss of feeling in three fi ngers.

He’d been athletic in his youth, but his ability to even walk seemed in question. In fact, he says, playing sports didn’t seem to matter much given the circumstances. He spent the next nine months in the hospital.

“It was after a few years before things started getting easier,” he says. “There were diffi cult days being in a wheelchair, where every day was a hassle.”

But with the help of doctors, physical therapists and his wife, Jessica, Benson found his way. Things began to look up. He learned how to use prosthetics, fathered a child, be-came the proud owner of an adaptive house

in Elizabeth through Homes for Our Troops and, eventually, he got back into sports.

Benson tried games for those with dis-abilities: volleyball, basketball and soccer, a version of which he compares to handball. He moved to Colorado after joining a ski team for paralyzed military veterans, but sought a new challenge. At the urging of a coach, he at-tempted sled hockey, and last year wound up winning the national sled hockey champion-ship with the Colorado Sled Hockey team.

It was a long journey to glory and, most importantly, his involvement in sports helped Benson overcome the depression that haunt-ed him after such a life-changing event.

Hikes connect cancer survivors Live by Living inspired by woman who foughtbreast cancer

By Chris Michlewicz [email protected]

Dan Miller admits he doesn’t have num-bers to prove it, but he knows in his heart that “wilderness therapy” demonstrated its worth in his wife’s fi nal years.

Julie Wrend had already been diagnosed with breast cancer and gone into remission by the time Miller met her in 1990. The cou-ple quickly fell in love and embarked side by side on outdoor adventures, including an annual trip to one of the 10th Mountain Division huts in Colorado’s high country.

Even when the cancer returned, Wrend refused to let it slow her down. Five months after a hysterectomy in 2001, she was com-pleting a fi ve-day, 30-mile hike through the fall colors.

“Anytime she had a setback with cancer, the most important thing was to get back out, even after surgery, just walking around the block to get stronger to go hiking again,” Miller says.

The Parker resident believes the excur-sions had a benefi cial impact on multiple levels: it gave Wrend a tangible goal, the exercise made her feel better, and being outdoors was therapeutic.

In honor of his late wife — who suc-cumbed to cancer in 2007 after a 19-year battle — Miller created Live by Living, a nonprofi t foundation that leads groups of 14-18 patients, survivors and their caretak-ers on hikes to Wrend’s favorite place. They also get together regularly for walks at local parks and hikes on trails in the Denver area. Naturally, the groups gain a sense of camaraderie.

“It can be an isolating disease, but it af-fects a lot of people,” Miller said. “It’s about the connections they make with people who are going through something similar.”

Diane Wendt, of Fort Collins, went on the group’s most recent hut trip in September and says that’s precisely what happened to her. Wendt did not expect those connections to be so powerful and organic.

“You can joke about stuff, laugh about it, and also cry about it,” said Wendt, who was 24 when she was diagnosed two years ago with leukemia. “There really is no judg-ment there because they have been in your

shoes.”Miller established a goal to raise money

to buy land and build a hut of his own, a place of “solace” to bring patients and survi-vors of any type of cancer, and name it after Wrend. While still working toward that goal, he is honoring his late wife the best way he knows how. The hikers are brought together by their experience, but cancer is never the focus of the trips. The purpose is to enable the patients and survivors to get away from the stress associated with treatment. It’s also meant to be a motivating force.

“People have the strength to do these things internally and we’re just helping them access their own inner resources,” Miller says.

Since 2009, Live by Living has led people into the wild, including the all-important caregivers and family members who have gone through the ups and downs that come with the illness. Volunteers prepare the meals, bring supplies to each destination, and lead the groups in meditation, yoga or music therapy.

The walks and hikes are free to the survivors and funded by corporate and individual donations, as well as grants from nonprofi ts like the George Karl Foundation.

Live by Living is having its own fundraiser Nov. 6 at The Denver Club.

The largest benefi t is leaving the worry behind and soaking up the freeing sensation of being out in nature. Miller is confi dent that the impacts, although immeasurable, go a long way.

“She lived longer than average for (a) stage-4 (cancer patient),” he said about Wrend. “I can’t prove it was because of the outdoor stuff, but I know it made it better.”

Wendt, who met Miller when he was running a booth at a “Stupid Cancer” event for young adults, was so convinced of the benefi ts that she has plans to start survi-vor walks in northern Colorado. Because she was so often stuck inside during her treatment, Wendt was “recharged” by going outside with like-minded people.

“Now that I’m done with treatment and feeling healthy, I’d love to take some people who are (going through treatment) on some walks,” she said.

CU – Boulder key partner innational STEM center initiative

FRIENDS FIRST Celebrates New LocationParents, students, and other community members celebrate past projects and future plans

To Noah Finkelstein it’s more of a movement. And it’s one that will go a long way to address the well-documented shortage of professionals in certain science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.

e University of Colorado Boulder and University of Massachusetts Amherst are lead public campuses partnering with the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities to create a national network of about 200 campus STEM education centers.

is project, funded by a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation, will create a network that supports and incubates these centers, provides a critical resource for stakeholders to engage with universities around STEM education and allows for essential research on the nature of these centers and the processes of network formation.

“We are now in a position to move beyond individual and isolated efforts and to leverage cross-institutional work,” said Finkelstein, CU-Boulder physics professor and network co-director.

STEM education centers serve as campus-based resources for addressing the national call for improving science, technology, engineering and mathematics education at the undergraduate level.

ese centers serve as homes for interdisciplinary and cross-unit work, support transformation of educational practices, provide resources within and across disciplines and serve as a locus for educational research, evaluation and systematic transformation.

In recent years, there has been significant growth in number and scale of these centers yet there is no established network or coordination.

e project will also examine the capacities and mechanisms of individual centers and identify how such a network forms and what it may accomplish.

e five-year project will yield a new national resource that will impact individual centers and campuses and provide a new platform for systemic transformation of undergraduate STEM education.

e network will provide programming and resources for established and new STEM centers including conferences, learning communities, an online engagement platform, toolkits of resources for centers

and directory of centers for the community and external stakeholders.

“It’s extremely valuable for institutions to have a dedicated forum to exchange ideas, compare practices and work together to address the pressing need to improve and expand undergraduate STEM education across the country,” Finkelstein said.

Greenwood Village just got a lot FRIENDLY…FRIENDS FIRST relocated to their new location at 7100 E. Belleview Ave. Suite 303. On Tuesday, October 20th members of the community and South Metro Denver Chamber welcomed the impactful nonprofit with a ribbon cutting and open house.

e event included drinks, light hors d’oeuvres and door prizes. Staff shared their passion for working with students and the impact FRIENDS FIRST has had over the 22 years. Students shared how the organization has taught them compassion. One young teen spoke to the crowd stating “FRIENDS FIRST has boosted her self-confidence and she looks forward to seeing her friends.”

“FRIENDS FIRST serves over 30 schools in the Denver metro area. We are happy to now occupy an office closer to the students and families we serve,” said Elycia Cook, Executive Director of FRIENDS FIRST. “We are also

excited to be surrounded by a community of businesses, with whom we hope to build partnerships for the future success of our teens. is Open House is not only a celebration and an opportunity to share about FRIENDS FIRST, but also a way for us to say thank you to our families, friends, and community of supporters.”

FRIENDS FIRST is known as a community leader in peer mentoring, working to educate and inspire teens to avoid high-risk behaviors, develop a strong sense of self-awareness, and prevent negative social interactions like bullying. Community service projects are an integral part of FRIENDS FIRST’s STARS peer mentoring program because they help teens cultivate compassion, one of the core elements of bullying prevention.

Following the celebration teens and staff finished preparing for Make Difference Day – October 24, 2015. Over 30 FRIENDS FIRST teens, parents, and

staff distributed blankets and hygiene kits to people experiencing homelessness in the areas surrounding 26th & California in Denver. FRIENDS FIRST decided to focus their community service in this neighborhood because it is undergoing an increase in people experiencing homelessness due to the area’s gentrification, rising rents, and the resulting displacement.

Mission: FRIENDS FIRST educates and mentors teens to make positive life choices and develop healthy relationships.

Feds block push to create pot bank Colorado’s weed industry remains in fi nancial limbo

By Kristen Wyatt Associated Press

Colorado’s attempt to create a bank to service its marijuana industry has suffered another setback by the federal government and could be facing an impossible dilemma.

The Federal Reserve — the guardian of the U.S. banking system — said in a court fi ling Oct. 21 that it doesn’t intend to accept a penny connected to the sale of pot because the drug remains illegal under federal law.

The stance appears to mark a shift in the position of the federal government. Last year, the U.S. Treasury Department issued rules for how banks can accept pot money.

“We’re frustrated,”

said Andrew Freedman, director of marijuana coordination for Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. “We tried to do the most with the building blocks of instructions they sent us, set up the most rigorous solution. And we still are left with confusion.”

The fi ling came in a legal battle between the Federal Reserve and the would-be Fourth Corner Credit Union, which was set up last year to serve Colorado’s $700 million-a-year marijuana industry.

The credit union can’t open without clearance from the Federal Reserve, which said in its fi ling that “transporting or transmit-ting funds known to have derived from the distri-bution of marijuana is illegal.”

Colorado chartered the Fourth Corner Credit Union after the Treasury Department issued its guidance last year on

marijuana banking. Fourth Corner was designed to give the industry in Colo-rado a safe place to bank while paying steep fees to account for all the hoops set up by the Treasury Department.

The credit union then needed permission from the Federal Reserve to access the national bank-ing system and perform electronic transactions. No dice.

The credit union now wants a federal judge to step in and order the Federal Reserve to change its mind.

“It’s a phenomenal question about execu-tive action,” said Peter Conti-Brown, a lawyer and banking historian at the University of Pennsylvania who is following the case.

On one hand, the Fed-eral Reserve is standing in the way of the stated goal of the Treasury Depart-ment to “enhance the availability of fi nancial ser-vices for, and the fi nancial transparency of, marijua-na-related businesses.”

But by allowing pot industry money to mingle with funds from other national commerce, the Federal Reserve would be removing one of the fi nal barriers to marijuana ac-ceptance.

The federal government could hardly claim to con-sider weed illegal if its own banking system allows marijuana proceeds in the national banking system.

The Federal Reserve said in the latest fi ling that bankers won’t be led away in handcuffs for taking

marijuana money, but they don’t have the right to put that money in the Federal Reserve.

By pushing for approval from the Federal Reserve, it was “as if Colorado enacted a scheme to allow trade in endangered spe-cies or trade with North Korea,” the fi ling says.

The mixed signals have left Colorado’s marijuana industry in a bind. Many shops still operate in cash, unable to accept credit cards or make other elec-tronic transactions.

“We’re still a Schedule I narcotic at the federal level,” said Tyler Henson of the Colorado Cannabis Chamber of Commerce, which represents pot growers and retailers. “We can provide every Band-Aid imaginable at the state level, but until the federal government acts on this, we’re stuck.”

Deirdra A. O’Gorman, CEO of the still-unopened credit union, said she’s more optimistic. A Federal Reserve account does not mean it is legitimizing an illegal industry, she said.

“We’ll be able to fi gure this out sooner rather than later,” O’Gorman said.

Conti-Brown, the bank-ing expert, is doubtful. “I don’t think the lawsuit is going to go anywhere,” he said.

The presiding judge in the case, U.S. District Judge R. Brooke Jackson in Denver, has given no indication when he’ll decide whether to hear the complaint fi led by Fourth Corner.

The mass casualty incident training involved a hiking group that was struck by lightning.

Search and Rescue prepares for mass casualtiesAll-volunteer team trains twice a month

By Shanna [email protected]

When members of the Douglas County Search and Rescue team recently de-ployed to Castlewood Canyon State Park one morning, they found people who looked as if they’d been struck by light-ning while hiking.

But the scenario wasn’t real. Instead, it was a true-to-life depiction — theatrical makeup created realistic-looking injuries and victims acted out their injuries to add to the realism of the mass casualty incident training.

The all-volunteer rescue team re-sponded, assessed the situation, treated the wounded and organized relief efforts, prioritizing and managing the crisis amid the chaos.

“The whole intent of this is to over-whelm the team,” said Travis Baker, a field team member who organized the training. “Usually, like last night, we have one subject and we had 10 to 12 rescuers that go out. But when there are situations like this scenario, with 18 subjects, the resources become very strained and we can’t operate in a mode that we’re used to operating in. It’s important for us to train in that mode once in a while because stuff like this does happen.”

The simulation closely reflected the

lightning strike that injured 16 people this summer at Mount Bierstadt. From 2005 to 2014, Colorado was the third highest in the nation for lightning-caused fatalities, with 17 people killed by lightning.

“It’s not that we’re training for a light-ning strike,” Baker said, “it’s that we’re training for any scenario that involves enough victims to cause us to be over-whelmed.”

Douglas County Search and Rescue is a nonprofit, all-volunteer team dedicated to providing search, rescue and emergency response to the Douglas County citizens. It was formed in September 1998 and deployed on its first mission Feb. 10, 1999, when two dirt bike riders went missing in Rampart Range. The missing bikers were located cold, but alive, in near-blizzard conditions by team members.

Bill Clendenning, who has been a team member since the unit’s beginning, said that the Castlewood Canyon scenario was unique because the number of casualties required the rescue team to problem-solve how to get the mass of people down from atop the canyon.

“We never know what’s going to hap-pen, and the more experience the team has, the better equipped we are to deal with any incident that comes up,” Clen-denning said. “If we do come up with a mass casualty, we’ve experienced that. If we come up with something less, we can put that knowledge and training into play.”

8-Opinion

VOICESLOCAL

Game on diamond is gem of example Well here we are again, October baseball

and the postseason. Thirty teams began their road to success back in the off-season and then played 162 games to determine who would make the playoffs as they vie for the title of the 2015 World Series Champi-ons.

Let’s just think about this for a moment, that’s 162 games for 30 different teams (not including the preseason or postseason), so that is 4,860 games played, and approxi-mately 43,740 innings played (not includ-ing extra innings or games where weather ended a game early). There were 4,909 home runs, and 37,446 strikeouts. There are statis-tics and data for every aspect of the game, attendance, injuries, and even the number of hot dogs and beer that are consumed.

Although the offi cial season began back in April and will end the fi rst week in November, their road to success began long before the 2015 season ever started. So how about we make this about you? When did your season or road to success begin for 2015?

Whether you set and planned for your goals on New Year’s Eve or you more re-cently defi ned what your personal success would look like, you will be participating

in your own journey, keeping your own statistics, and playing your own game.

If you were pursu-ing a health goal you might be keeping statistics around calo-ries consumed, days or hours in the gym, steps taken, miles ran, strength or endurance increased, etc.

As a salesperson trying to increase sales, revenue and commission, your score keeping may in-

clude networking events attended, number of new prospects identifi ed, qualifi ed ap-pointments scheduled, presentations given, proposals generated, contracts signed and referrals received.

So you see, it’s not just about professional athletes and teams who plan, prepare, and achieve success, win World Series trophies, and receive Most Valuable Player awards; the game of success is for each and every one of us who takes the time to set a worthy

goal, has the determination and commit-ment to see it through, and who carefully keeps score around the actions and behav-iors required to meet with their desired level of success.

And as you are looking at the statistic above, 4,909 home runs and 37,446 strike-outs, you can see that there are 7.5 times more failures than there are successes. But for the team that wins the World Series, they only see the strikeouts as temporary setbacks.

So how about you? Are you keeping score and looking at your statistics as you pursue your goals and dreams? Have you turned your goals into a game of success? If you would like to know more about this concept I would love to hear from you at [email protected]. And when we can look at and evaluate the pursuit of our goals in new ways, it really will be a better than good week.

WINNING WORDS

Sometimes there’s music that cuts through murk The Zombies were in town recently. No, not the candidates. The “She’s Not There” Zombies.About 45 years ago, I was in the school

newspaper offi ces at UCLA and spotted a Zombies PR packet. It featured someone named Colin Blunstone.

That name stuck in my head.A name like Colin Blunstone would stick

in the head of someone named Craig Smith.Blunstone is 70, and all of the other sur-

viving Zombies are older than I am too. When I saw the newspaper article about

their Denver concert, I had to read it twice.I thought it might be one of those tribute

bands.Nope. It’s them.It’s not Them.Them was Van Morrison’s group.The Zombies had back-to-back hits, and

then recorded an album, “Odessey (sic) and Oracle,” that went nowhere initially.

Later Rolling Stone ranked it number 100 on its list of the 500 Great Albums of All Time.

The group played the album in its en-tirety in Denver.

It’s only 35 minutes long, so they must have added a few songs to the playlist.

I know that some performers stay around forever.

It happens all the time in classical music. But usually a band that only has a couple

of hits fades away.I tried to imagine some of the other

bands from that era touring again.Herman’s Hermits, Gerry and the Pace-

makers, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas.

Billy J. Kramer’s middle initial was not “J.”

John Lennon suggested it.

He thought it gave Kramer a “tougher edge.”

Lennon, and McCartney, also gave Kramer some songs. They turned out to be their biggest hits.

Those few years of the early Beatles and all of the bands that fol-lowed them from

England made a big impression on me.It was a big improvement. The radio was backed up with Paul Anka

and Frankie Avalon, and, please, Fabian.Neil Sedaka. Sedaka was awful. Tab

Hunter had a hit record.Music needed a considerable laxative.

Am I allowed to say that? Then things changed. They changed on

Sunday, February 9, 1964, when ghoulish Ed Sullivan introduced the Beatles.

It changed again when bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who, and the Yardbirds ap-peared.

The Kinks were great. The lead singer, Ray Davies, married

the lead singer of the Pretenders, Chrissie Hynde.

Led Zeppelin truly had a tougher edge,

and they went along neatly with the Rolling Stones, who were the bad boys when the Beatles were being sweet and cute.

That changed too.By the time he died, Lennon had a repu-

tation. One morning a few years ago, I sat on a

bench at the Lennon tribute in Central Park. It’s called Strawberry Fields. I erased

everything in my thoughts for a few minutes except the Beatles.

I saw them in concert two months after Jennifer was born, in the same city.

I cannot imagine that the music on the radio now will impact teenagers like “Please Please Me” affected me.

It’s almost unexplainable.Everything was beginning to take its

shape at that time. I had an identity for the fi rst time.

Music is on all the time here. When I am writing, I can go back and

forth between KVOD and my playlists.I always have a soundtrack.Music has been a column theme many

times. Please get used to it.During KVOD’s fund drive, I listen to my

own music.I came home one day, and a song that I

didn’t know I owned was playing. It was a street corner song by the Pastels.I fi rst heard “Been So Long” on my brand

new transistor radio. In 1957. It’s been so long.

preview held for faculty and staff on Oct. 21.

Jennifer Barclay, performing arts teacher at Elizabeth High School, said she was pleased with the cast’s work fol-lowing the Oct. 21 special performance, and she praised Auger for her dedication to the role of Jennie Watson.

“She has really put herself into the role,” Barclay said.

The most difficult part of the perfor-mance for Auger was memorizing the nearly 700 lines for Watson, a demanding role that keeps the character on stage for all but a few seconds of the play’s hour-and-a-half running time.

“I leave the stage once for about 10 seconds when I go to get a tray, and I come back on. That’s the only time I leave the stage, other than intermission,” Auger said with a laugh.

Auger’s favorite part of the play is a

scene in which her character and Holmes fend off the hound as it attacks Sir Henry Baskerville.

“I dive on him, and we are crashing around. It is so much fun,” she said.

Auger began performing in elemen-tary school and enjoyed it so much that she continued with theater through middle school and high school, working both onstage and off.

“Acting has always been my favorite part,” she says. “When I did technical theater, I still enjoyed it, but I found that I did not feel it in my heart as much as

I did when I was on stage. That’s just where my heart is.”

Following graduation, Auger will spend part of the summer touring seven European countries with a Colorado choir and then move to New York with her family. She plans to study acting in college.

The next play on the bill for the Elizabeth High School performing arts program is “Seussical,” a musical based on the books of Dr. Seuss. Auditions for “Seussical” are scheduled for Nov. 4-6.

issues with the fire suppression system and an antiquated fire alarm system pumped up the project cost by about $70,000 and pushed the opening back four months to Oct. 13.

The renovation project took almost $250,000 to complete, with $201,000 funded by the 2014 Douglas County Community Development Block Grant program. Another $26,000 came from the Town of Castle Rock’s portion of the 2015 community grant funding.

A variety of organizations also contrib-uted, including Castle Rock Rotary, Lead-ership Douglas County, Highlands Ranch Rotary, Village Idiots Bicycling Club and Office Liquidations.

“As part of the mission statement of the Task Force, it says in there that we will provide dignity to our clients,” said Jim Weglarz, board chairman. “The old set-up wasn’t the best for that.”

Renovation of the new space, which was previously a vacant, unfinished part of the building, not only affords the organization more space but also more privacy.

“What the new center really offers to us is a much more professional working environment,” Weglarz said. “It will pro-vide us with the opportunity to expand our client services moving forward.”

There are now two offices where client-services advocates can meet with clients. By utilizing both offices, the center could double the number of clients served.

The second office also is being consid-ered to house computers and a possible

job assistance space, Weglarz said. He added that in January, there will be a push from the federal government for social services agencies, such as the task force, to provide a tracking model that shows how clients are moving into self-sufficien-cy.

“We’re going to have to look for what other client services we can provide to achieve that goal,” Weglarz said.

The center’s growth and expansion over the years would not have been pos-sible without Suzanne Greene, who was executive director for 11 years, Weglarz said.

“She was instrumental in moving us from the small building on Jerry Street to this location,” he said, “and we are very thankful for that and her services to the task force.”

The Douglas/Elbert Task Force will host an open house for the new client service area, open to the public, from 4-7 p.m. Oct. 29 at 1638 Park St., Castle Rock.

Tour touches on history, beautyNew Mexico, Colorado trip offers insights into cultures

By Sonya [email protected]

A number of years ago, members of the Littleton Friends of the Library who shared an interest in history organized a trip to visit a historic Western fort. The trip also involved good food and conver-sation and a look at interesting spots most hadn’t seen before. Since then, trips have been organized most years: to Kansas along the Santa Fe Trail, where forts were built to protect merchants and settlers; to several New Mexico locations; north to Wyoming and tales of Custer; and to some former military sites in Colorado.

On Oct. 8, a big green bus headed south from Littleton toward New Mexico, with more than 50 members on board. The plan was to look at four different cultures — and hopefully, some gorgeous gold aspens. The trip was organized by veteran members Anita and Roy Kan-naday and Barb and Stu Brandt, with planning bolstered by a previous trial run by the quartet.

Pueblo was the first destination, with a look at Victorian wealth and elaborate lifestyle exemplified by the Thatchers, who built the 37-room Rosemount Man-sion in the early 1890s. The property was named for Margaret Thatcher’s favorite flower, and pink rhyolite from Castle Rock was the proper color. It cost about $100,000 to construct and furnish — an enormous amount at that time. Beautiful woodwork, Tiffany chandeliers, hand-painted ceilings, English tile on fireplaces made it a true showplace. Rosemount is one of the historic homes in Colorado op-erated by History Colorado as part of the museum system. Lunch in the Carriage

House Restaurant is a possible add-on.The group headed south toward Taos,

across La Veta Pass with a stop at Colo-rado’s Fort Garland, established in 1858. Here was a look at a military culture, once commanded by Kit Carson (and never attacked). It is maintained as a museum and an interesting stop to see how those early soldiers lived — including a com-pany of Buffalo Soldiers.

Arrival in Taos was in late afternoon, with dinner and a performance by a family of Native American dancers, who explained the ceremonial aspects of the chants and dances and of beautifully crafted costumes.

Taos Pueblo is said to be the oldest continuously inhabited community in the U.S., with some adobe structures believed to be 1,000 years old. The tour guide, a college boy, said he, like many others, lived outside the pueblo where water and electricity are available, but families retain an ownership of a pueblo home and many maintain it. (Adobe needs annual care.) An ancient cemetery surrounds the ruins of the original San Geronimo Church, built about 1619 by Spanish priests with Indian labor. Forced Catholicism and slavery led to the Pueblo Revolt in 1680.

The difficult history continued as settlers moved in, plus U.S. troops under Territorial Gov. Charles Bent. Today, it is a National Historic Landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where Na-tive Americans teach visitors about their past and present.

On a parallel time track, Chimayo was a Spanish colonial village, built in the foothills north of Santa Fe. In the late 1600s, Spanish settlers built the site in the fertile Santa Cruz River Valley, with church added in the early 1800s. The Sanctuario de Chimayo offers sacred dirt that draws pilgrims each who believe it to have healing properties. Among the origi-

nal settlers were families of weavers, who still produce textiles and run shops in the village where they demonstrate their craft — and sell the colorful products to visitors, as well as wood carvings and pottery from nearby villages. The Rancho de Chimayo, in a restored hacienda built by the Jaramillo family, is a favorite dinner spot in the village.

The morning of Oct. 10 brought the group to the Martinez Hacienda on the edge of Taos — a look at Spanish colonial society as well, built in stages starting in 1804 by Severino Martinez as a home and commercial hub on the Santa Fe Trail. Thick adobe walls and a window-

less exterior made it function as a fort if necessary. He also brought trade goods in from Mexico. This is carefully restored and operated as a museum.

Finally, the travelers headed through aspen-filled mountains toward Cimarron and the St. James Hotel, circa 1870/80, which was once a stop on the Santa Fe Trail. It takes pride in the bullet holes one can still see in the walls and has a series of portraits of famous gunfighters who shot each other up in the bar.

Another facet of the frontier — and one could think that that was still hap-pening when the refined Thatchers built their elegant home in Pueblo.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be growing impatient with a situation that seems to resist efforts to resolve it. But staying with it raises the odds that you’ll find a way to a suc-cessful resolution.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Travel and kin-ship are strong in the Bovine’s aspect this week. This would be a good time to combine the two and take a trip to see family members for a pre-holiday get-together.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A colleague could make a request you’re not comfortable with. If so, say so. Better to disappoint someone by sticking with your principles than disappoint yourself if you don’t.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The Moon Child’s ability to adapt to life’s ebbs and flows helps you deal with the changes that you might confront at work or at home, or both. Things settle down by the week’s end.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s a good week for Leos and Leonas to get some long-outstanding business matters resolved. Then go ahead and plan a fun-filled family getaway weekend with the mate and the cubs.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A possible workplace change seems promising. If you de-cide to look into it, try not to form an opinion on just a small part of the picture: Wait for the full image to develop.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A new-comer helps keep things moving. There might be some bumpy moments along the way, but at least you’re heading in the right direction. You win praise for your choices.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You could be pleasantly surprised by how a decision about one thing opens up an unexpected new option. Also, assistance on a project could come from a surprising source.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) With more information to work with, you might now be able to start the process that could lead to a major change. Reserve the weekend for family and friends.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This could be a good time to begin gathering infor-mation that will help you turn that long-held idea into something substantive. A personal matter might need extra attention.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) That new challenge might carry some surprises. But you should be able to handle them using what you already know. That new supporter should be there to lend assistance.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Someone might be trying to disguise his or her true mo-tives. But the perceptive and perspicacious Pi-sces should have little or no problem finding the truth in all that foggy rhetoric.

BORN THIS WEEK: You can always rely on your people skills to help you find solutions to prob-lems others often give up on.
