Going Into All the World, #1

Our mission efforts here at Westwood are really going well. There are many of our folks planning to take trips during this calendar year - and we applaud their efforts. I just think that, at times, those of us who don’t go or can’t go may feel a little guilty or like a “lesser disciple” because we don’t actually go on the mission trip. I’d like to address that in this space over the next few weeks. The Lord plainly expects us to “go into all the world and preach the gospel” (Mark 16:15). And although we ALL need to “go”, how we “go” may differ. Notice 1 Corinthians 12:4-6. "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of work-ing, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work." Paul adds to that later in the same chapter these words, “The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all of its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ" (12:12). Paul tells us that just as with our physical body every part is important and has a different function, so it is with the church body. You may not be gifted nor have the desire to “go” on a mission trip, but you are willing to “go” by using the gifts you do have to help spread the good news.

Over the next few weeks we’ll study how we can “go into all the world” and never leave home...by praying, giving, serving and sharing our gifts and abilities with others.

What is a worldview? A worldview is a conceptual scheme that con-tains our fundamental beliefs about life’s ultimate questions, ques-tions such as: What is really real? How do we come to know truth? How should we behave in this world? Is there any meaning or pur-pose for us in life? What does it mean to be human? Does God exist, and can we know anything about what He is like? Whether it is real-ized or not, everyone has a worldview. Some of us have a Christian worldview. What does that mean? Many years ago, a California gangster named Mickey Cohen shocked people when he went forward at a religious crusade and made a pro-fession of faith. However, after several months, it became evident that his way of life had not changed. During an interview, Cohen ex-plained that since we have Christian movie stars and Christian politi-cians, he wanted to be the first Christian gangster. It’s apparent to most of us that you can’t be a Christian without a Christian worldview. If someone considers himself a Christian, he is supposed to think and act like a Christian. The New Testament is clear when it announces, “if a man is in Christ, he becomes a new person altogether- the past is finished and gone, everything has become fresh and new.” (II Cor. 5:17, Phillips Translation)
