Elections will be held on Monday, May 1, 2017 at the Cottage City Town Hall. Polls will be open 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Election Day. The Election will be conducted to fill the seats of:

Certificate of Nominations are now available at the Town Hall. They are to be turned into the Administration Office no later than Friday, March 31, 2017 by 5:00pm. Deadline to register to vote is Friday, March 31, 2017. Every person who meets the following criteria may vote in Town elections:

Citizen of the United States;

Eighteen (18) years of age;

Must reside in the corporate limits of Cottage City 30 days preceding any town election;

Is a registered voter in accordance with the provisions of the Cottage City Charter and is a qualified voter of the Town.

BLACK HISTORY CELEBRATION: “CONNECTING WITH OUR TOWN” (Submitted by Ms. Shirley Lewis, Cottage City Resident & Event Planner.)

Thank you, Cottage City Family, for coming out to enjoy our Black History Celebration held at Town Hall on Sat., Feb. 18th, 2017. The “Cottage City Spirit” was in evidence as Mr. Irvin Peterson led the audience in a rousing rendition of the Black National Anthem (“Lift Every Voice and Sing”). Mr. Abel Nunez, Commission Chair and Exec. Dir., CARECEN (Central American Resource Center), was cited for his receipt of the John Thompson Jr. Legacy Award, presented by Georgetown University/Kennedy Center, for service exemplifying the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his profession. The award was given on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 16, 2017 at the Kennedy Center. The Charles Rahmat Woods Jazz Band was exceptional, and our Cottage City performers, namely Mr. Frederick Hill, Ward 2 Commissioner (poet); our children in the Storytelling Circle with Ms. S. Settles (Storyteller); the comedian Mr. J. Hill; the Bladensburg High School honors students John Leiva (showcased with the band on violin); and the afrocentric fashions exhibited by our high-stepping, fashionable young ladies led by Ms. Kayla (along with the ladies of FAME, LaTia, Ikea and Khadija), were all great crowd pleasers. Ms. Chanel Compton, Exec. Dir. of Prince George’s African American Museum & Cultural Center at N. Brentwood, enthralled us with her discussion of the work of Cottage City’s own, our dearly departed Ms. Joanna Blake, who sculpted the “Undaunted in Battle” Memorial opposite Peace Cross. This monument features Mr. Charles Ball, a freed slave, who fought alongside Commodore Joshua Barney and an unidentified Marine, during the Battle of Bladensburg on August 24, 1814. This unsuccessful battle resulted in the burning of the White House by the British during the War of 1812, but later led to the winning of the war at Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore. Ms. Compton’s riveting story of the life of Mr. Ball, who ran away and was recaptured three times, was a testimony to the spirit of man, undaunted in battle, and undaunted in his quest for freedom. Thank you to the commissioners, staff, area business establishments, our parents, and especially the Cottage City community, all who contributed to Making it Happen! By all accounts, a good time was had by all! We truly experienced a “Cottage City Connection!” For those who are interested, we are working to make a CD available of this event, so stay tuned!

Gracias, a Cottage City, por venir y disfrutar de nuestra celebración de Historia Afro-americana celebrada en la alcaldía el sábado, Febrero de 18 de 2017. ADVISORY COMMITTEE

STATEMENT OF COTTAGE CITY ADVISORY GROUP ON SPENDING, TAXES, AND THE NEED FOR FRUGALITY The Cottage City Advisory Group is aware the Commission is working on the budget for the town for the 2017-2018 fiscal year. The Advisory Group appreciates the work of the Commission in seeking to achieve the best for our town. We would like to offer the following statement, beginning with a modest but meaningful lesson on the value of frugality, offered by one of our members: Use it up. Wear it out. Make it do. Or do without.

This is a simple, but not simplistic, statement on how, even in this complicated world, we can often make do on less, even when more seems attractive. We live in a small town, with many townspeople who may not be able to pay the higher taxes that may be required if spending increases. And our emergency fund needs to remain intact in order to save it for true emergencies in our future. We encourage the Commission to keep these things in mind when deciding on whether to approve budget increases that might be nice, but may not be necessary. We need to have a vision for the future of our town that belongs to all townspeople and taxpayers. We hope that our Commissioners who represent us, and our good and loyal town employees who work for our good taxpayer townspeople in making proposals for the budget, will plan with such a vision in mind. One aspect of a process for finding that vision began with the Priorities meeting that was held some time ago. We encourage follow-up meetings to that one, to try to seek out the priorities of all our taxpayer townspeople, before making final decisions on how to spend our money. It is important that a vision that arises from our people – our taxpayers – take precedence over what may seem to be calling today, but which may be more want than need. Remember, our people are our power. We like our small town and hope you will keep it affordable for all, with these thoughts in mind.

On 2-2-17, Sgt. Miltenberger took are report for a Theft of a Bad Check

On 2-3-17, in the 4200 Block of Bladensburg Rd, Officer Walthall conducted a Suspicious Person Check

On 2-3-17, in the 4000 block of Bladensburg Rd, Officer Walthall conducted a traffic stop that lead to a Impound.

On 2-6-17, in the 4300 block of Bladensburg Rd, Officer Walthall was patrolling the area when she observed a vehicle and an air pump parked in the alley. Officer Walthall impounded the vehicle for safekeeping. It was later determined the vehicle was stolen.

On 2-9-17, in the 3700 block of Cottage Terrace, Officer Wathall was diaptched for a Vandalism to Auto. Victim window was broken and nothing was taken. Unknown what caused the window to break.

On 2-10-17, in the 4800 block of Parkwood St, Officer Thompson responded for a Vandalism Report. Victim knows the suspect.

On 2-16-17, in the 4000 block of Bladensburg Rd, Sgt. Miltenberger responded for a Breaking and Entering Report.

**All residents receiving county-contracted trash and recycling collection services have been moved to once a week pick up. Our municipality has not. Cottage City is not contracted with the county; Cottage City is contracted with Bates Trash Removal and will continue to have twice a week pick up. If you have any concerns or questions, please call Bates at 301-773-2069.
