Small area population estimates are published each year by National Records of Scotland (NRS). The

most recent (mid-2015) estimates were published on 25th August 2016. This paper presents the data in

graphical form. Population pyramids have been created for each electoral ward (2007). These are

intended to provide a quick and easy comparison of the different age and sex structures of Aberdeen

City’s electoral wards. Note: the population pyramids are not to scale and therefore not useful for

comparing population sizes – ward populations range from a low of 15,038 in Midstocket/Rosemount

to a high of 22,817 in Torry/Ferryhill (see figure below).

Note:

1. The scale of the horizontal axis (i.e. the number of people) varies substantially between

electoral wards as this depends on the size of the population within that ward and also

on the size of particular age groups.

2. These differences of scale can have the effect of slightly distorting figures – similar sized

differences may appear ‘exaggerated’ in the areas with a smaller population and ‘lost’ in

more highly populated neighbourhoods – particularly where there is a very large

population in a particular age group (e.g. high numbers in the younger adult age groups

in George Street/Harbour make differences between other age groups less noticeable).

Note: Population data is provided by NRS by data zone by single year of age. Data zones have

been amalgamated to ward level on a ‘best fit’ basis. All data is given in 5-year age bands with

the exception of 10-15 year olds (and consequently 16-19 year-olds) to correspond to the most

commonly requested age category (i.e. under 16’s).
