“Speech processing as an aid forimproved perception by the hearingimpaired”

Areas of Interest: Speech signal processing; Signalprocessing algorithms as an aid for the hearing impaired;Wireless communication systems

A number of research studies have aimed at identifying and enhancing important speechcharacteristics that are distorted, weak, or imperceptible for hearing-aid users. Onepromising scheme to improve intelligibility is based on studies of speaking clearly for thehearing impaired. It is expected that individuals with hearing loss would receive speechrecognition benefits if their communication partners were provided with clear-speechintervention.

Ongoing Research• Speech signal processing algorithms as an aid for the hearing impaired• Creating synthetic speech stimuli and altering acoustic segments

independently to study their effects on speech perception under simulatedhearing-impairment conditions.

Ongoing Research: Current efforts to find solution to the spectrum scarcity problem in acurrent having very high frequency (VHF) spectrum used for aeronautical communication, FCIand ICAO jointly proposed to use L-band (UHF) in the frequency range of 960–1164 MHz insteadof VHF band if coexistence with legacy systems is ensured. As a result, interference from variouslegacy systems operated in the UHF band would become a bottle- neck of the new air-to ground(A/G) communication system in the UHF band. LDACS type 1 (LDACS1) and LDACS type 2(LDACS2), are preselected as the most promising candidates for future aeronauticalcommunications operated in L-band.

In a wireless communication system, the transmitted signal is exposed to various surfaces where itbounces and results in several delayed versions of the same signal at the receiver end. The delayedsignals are in the form of electromagnetic waves that are diffracted and reflected from the variousobject surfaces. These result in co-channel interferences for wireless systems. MIMO has proven tobe a striking solution for the new generation of wireless systems. MIMO-OFDM system with QPSKmodulation is considered as the wireless system for studying the performance of interferencecancellation techniques. The BER performance is studied in channels such as Rayleigh and RicianFading Channels. The effects of interference are reduced to a certain extent by the inclusion ofCDMA (spread spectrum technique) as Technique 1. The effects of interference on this system havebeen further reduced using the LMS filter as Technique 2. Hence, to show better performance inMIMO-OFDM systems, it is recommended to employ both CDMA and LMS filters to decrease theeffects of co-channel interference. It is observed that the parameter BER reduces as the SNRincreases for both these channels.

“Our research group currently focusses on stability

analysis of Power System interconnected with Grid

Forming (GFM) Converters”Area of Interests: Power Electronics Applications to Power Systems, Grid Forming and Following Converters.

Ongoing Research: Penetration of renewable energy (e.g. wind and solar) to the grid is rushingthroughout the world and some of the countries are already achieved 100% penetration tomeet their demand. The renewable energy sources are interconnected to the grid throughpower electronics inverter so the generation is termed as Inverter Based Generation (IBG).With the high penetration of IBG, the conventional generators (Thermal, Hydro and nuclearpower plants) are displaced to balance the power flows. This transition from conventionalgeneration (rotational inertia) to Inverter Based Generation (power electronics) will lower theavailable inertia in the grid. In view of IBG physical characteristics and lack of inertia leadingresearchers and power system operators to work towards detailed modeling, power systemstability & control aspects to achieve grid operation with 100% IBG. Therefore, it is of utmostimportant to develop integration methods for high penetration of IBG without causing stabilityproblems in the power grid.

On going project:

Neuromorphic systems are designed and developed to meet the

computational requirement of AI, ML and Computer vision algorithms

for being low power and computationally efficient.

Our work is designing reliability and variability aware neuron and

synapse CMOS circuits for improved performance. This helps in better

prediction of data (either image, audio, video etc.) over the lifetime of

semiconductor chip. We mainly investigates the BTI and HCI related

impact on circuits.

We are also working on the applications of IoT with AI and ML

techniques.
