ELECTRICITY FROM / FOR ROAD REFLECTORS

Abstract:
Think of the days when road was laid in a basic
model. It is of a great gift to the people one who wishes to
travel. It finds its improvement as the days passes in all aspects
like 4 way track, speed track…etc. In this way of improvement
we also found improved features for safety for the drivers by
using reflector board, indication lights and signal. Among these
the road reflectors placed in the roads are very helpful for the
drivers especially at night because night driving is nearly a
blind driving due to the absence of bright source like lamp
posts at this time these reflectors play a role in making the
drivers to catch and follow the track. By these reflectors many
accidents are avoided and a state of improvement in these road
reflectors they are furnished now with led blinking lights which
run by solar power. In accordance to this as another step of
improvement this paper presents a new idea which will make
the reflectors self sufficient in its energy needs without costlier
equipments.

1. Introduction:
In today’s world there are many inventions and
improvements apart from these there are many process
involved in order providing safety. In such processes there are
many ideas and projects like getting electricity from speed
breakers (or) bumps. The idea is really good but the purpose of
the speed breaker is lost. Once a driver crosses and feels that it
is not disturbing him (I.e.) it goes in and merges to the same
surface of the road. And so the next time he passes he won’t
slow his vehicle. So this paper focuses on making reflectors self
sufficient but at the same time it is made sure that it maintains
its purpose.
2. Disadvantages in the previous advancements:
Reflectors uses battery to power the led’s no one
wishes to change the battery when it goes off.
Reflectors use power from main lines. Wastage of
money in wiring the reflectors.
Reflectors are placed with a solar panel at top which
absorbs the sunlight and so it produces electricity. Due
to speed of the vehicles and the crossing of over
weighed vehicles it breaks off.
Reflectors with piezo crystals when the vehicle moves
it crushes and so current is produced and used. It is too
costly.
And so many innovations are at the speed breaker
level like
Crank-shaft mechanism
Roller mechanism
Rack- Pinion mechanism
But these ideas really fail due to the only reason that the
purpose of the speed breaker is lost.
3. Principle:
The principle behind the working process is when
an automobile passes the reflector it just presses it due to the
force it presses the air in the chamber get compresses and it is
made to gush out through a small nozzle. The high pressure
air coming out of the nozzle will hit the impellor placed
under it. And so the impellor rotates and the generator which
coupled to the same shaft rotates so some amount of
electricity is produced. This process continues to happen
during the day time since numerous vehicles passes over and
thus electricity required to light the led’s are obtained hence
the current stored during daytime is utilized for the led’s
blinking at night.

IDEA 1:
In this reflector is placed in a chamber having a
hole at the bottom it is also placed in the lifted position by
means of a spring. The bottom portion has a battery, motor and
an impellor attached to it. The impellor is connected to the
motor and in turn the electricity generated is taken through
wires to the battery for storing purpose
IDEA 2:
In this the same above is done in addition to that the
chamber here encloses the propellor and shaft also so that the
air which is compressed down is again reused and taken up
again into the upper chamber by means of a telescopic capillary
tube.
5. Working:
IDEA 1:
STEP 1: When an automobile passes over the reflector
the reflector gets pressed and so the air present
inside the chamber gets compressed and bears a high pressure
STEP 2: Now the pressurized air gushes out of the nozzle.

STEP 3: The gushed out air forces the impellor to rotate.
STEP 4: Impellor is coupled to generator and so it rotates
in turn producing electricity
STEP 5: Electricity produced is stored in the battery for
further usage.
IDEA 2:
Same process as in idea 1 after this.
STEP 6: The air which comes compressed from the
upper layer after completing its work it again goes back to the
upper layer through the capillary tube due to the vacuum
created in the upper layer by the raising of the reflector by the
spring force as the vehicle moves.

9. Conclusion:
From this paper we heard new techniques making
reflectors self sufficient for its energy needs which will
reduce the accidents or making the drivers alert about the
track when they are driving at nights. I hope that these
ideas will be taken into consideration and implemented so
that it will be helpful to the drivers driving at nights
indicating the crossings, tracks, and road closings….etc.
