What is it?

An Electrocardiogram or ECG is a recording of the small electricalsignals your heart generates as it beats and is the most commonheart test performed. These signals should travel through the heartalong special pathways instructing the heart muscles how to beatcorrectly. The presence of these signals can be detected on thesurface of your skin by the ECG machine via cables and smallsticky electrodes placed on the skin.

The ECG recording is a plot of these changing signals plottedagainst time. The shape of the recording can help the doctor see ifthe heart has a problem or is beating normally.

Why is it done?

ECGs are performed for many reasons. Your doctor may alreadyhave told you why in your case he/she would like you to have youECG recorded. Listed on this page are five of the most commonreasons for recording an electrocardiogram:
