ELECTROLYTE REPLACER &NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTHYDRA - LY T E MAK E S A L L S Y S T EMSGO
Only fast, effective rehydration can prevent death from dehydrationDehydration is a life or death matter for veryyoung calves.
• It is the leading cause of death among calvestwo to 30 days of age.
• One day of scouring can cost calves five to 10 percent of their bodyweight in water.
• At 12 percent, they can die.1
Hydra-Lyte has a multi-purpose formulaHydra-Lyte is both an electrolyte replacer and a nutritional supplement specifically designedfor very young calves. Hydra-Lyte’s scientificformula promotes rapid absorption of waterwhile re-establishing the electro lyte balancecritical for survival.
Complete formula, balanced formulaHydra-Lyte contains the right ingredi-ents to effectively re hydrate youngcalves. When mixed according tolabel directions, Hydra-Lyte providesthe optimal ratio of water, solubleelectrolytes and nutrients to promoterapid absorption of water and the uptake of electrolytes and energy.
Features & Benefits• specially balanced electro -
lyte solution promotes rapidfluid absorption and returnto normal pH levels
• Contains acetate to helpcorrect acidosis
• Because there is no bicar-bonate, it can be used withthe milk ration
• Contains glycine, glucoseand acetate for quick energysupport
• Formulated for use withcalves, foals, kids andlambs

HyDra-Lyte suPPLIes:– Dextrose – for energy and to
promote water and electrolyte absorption
– Glycine – promotes intestinal absorption and protein utilization
– sodium acetate – helps correctacidosis and provides energy
– Potassium chloride – restoresrequired potassium level and corrects hypokalemia
– sodium chloride – restoressodium level and helps fluid absorption
– sodium citrate – enhances absorption through the gut
The more dehydrated your calves are, thesicker they are…and the more they needfast, effective rehydration. Since calves willdie from dehydration faster than the illnesscausing it, it is essential to give them theright amount of an electrolyte replacer andwater. The amount is determined by a calf’sweight and the severity of its dehydration.
Do you know when your calves are dangerously dehydrated?
Clinical Signs Percent Dehydrated
Healthy appearance or few clinical signs < 5%
Sunken eyes; skin tenting 3–5 seconds;6 –7%mouth – warm, sticky and pale
Depression; weak, not standing; skin tenting 8–10 seconds; 8 –10%
mouth – cool, dry and pale; cool ears/legs
Recumbent; mouth – cold, dry, pale; 11–12%cold ears/legs; weak, thready pulse
Death > 12%

Electrolyte replacement and nutritional supplement for young animals
Indications Hydra-Lyte is indicated for use as anelectro lyte replacement and nutritionalsupplement for young calves, kids, lambs and foals.
PreparationPrepare solution by dissolving the contents of both compartments of thispackage in two quarts of warm water. Prepare the solution just prior to use andadminister with esophageal tube, nursingbottle or pail. When using the bulk pail, follow label directions.

This chart calculates the amount of Hydra-Lyte solution needed:
Administer two quartsof Hydra-Lyte
solution to each calfor foal twice daily for
the first two days
Feed Hydra-Lyte as extrameals while still feedingmilk or milk replacer. Ifthe animal refuses milk,
feed the Hydra-Lyte solution and resume
feeding the milk or milkreplacer at the nextscheduled feeding.
Administer one quart Hydra-Lyte solution
mixed with one quart ofmilk or milk replacer to
each calf or foal twotimes each day.
Lambs will requireabout one-fourth of the
above dosage.
Most treated animals can be returned to
normal feeding on thefifth day, but treatmentcan be continued onthe fifth through the
seventh day.
Hydra-Lyte is specially buffered
An effective electrolyte replacer contains an alkalizing agent to decrease deadly acidosis. But some formulas use bicarbonate, which interferes with a calf’s ability to digest its milk ration.Since Hydra-Lyte is specially formulated with sodium acetate, the most easily metabolizedbuffer, it may be fed along with the milk ration and won’t impede its digestion. Calves must have the nutrition and energy from their normal diet, along with fluid and electrolyte support to effectively recover.
