A Museum of Science Traveling Program
Electromagnetism
Description
Electromagnetism is a 60-
minute presentation that
reinforces concepts about
electricity and magnetism as
both forces and forms of
energy. It is designed to build
on NGSS-based curricula.
NGSS: Next Generation Science Standards
Needs
We bring all materials and
equipment, including a video
projector and screen. Access
to 110-volt electricity is
required.
Space Requirements
The program can be presented in assembly-
suitable spaces like gyms, multipurpose rooms,
cafeterias, and auditoriums.
Goals: Electric Force
Van de Graaff generators are
excellent for demonstrating
the forces that exist between
like and opposite charges.
Goals: Magnetic Force
Magnets attract and repel
just like electric charges,
and we can even create a
magnet by using electricity,
and vice-versa.
Goals: Fields of Force
Fields allow forces to act at
a distance, just like how a
charged balloon can lift up
your hair without even
touching it.
Goals: Energy
Learn how forces can
transfer Energy to different
forms. For example, see
how electric energy can
transfer to light, heat, and
sound.
Finale
We’ll conclude with an
exciting transformation
of energy, using
electromagnetism to
light a fire, or give an
object enough kinetic
energy to fly across the
room!
Additional Content
In addition to these core goals,
other concepts are taught with
additional demonstrations.
Program Details
• Can only be booked for
school groups during the
school year.
• Only available for fourth-
grade students studying the
program content.
Program Details
• Capacity is eight classes
(200 students) per session.
• Up to two consecutive
sessions can be taught per
day.
NGSS Connections
• 4-PS3-2. Make observations to show that energy can be
transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and
electric currents.
• 4-PS3-4. Apply scientific principles of energy and motion
to test and refine a device that converts kinetic energy to
electrical energy or uses stored energy to cause motion or
produce light or sound.
NGSS Scientific and Engineering
Practices Incorporated
• Asking questions and defining problems.
• Planning and carrying out investigations.
• Using mathematics and computational thinking.
• Developing and using models.
• Analyzing and interpreting data.
• Constructing explanations and designing solutions.
2019 – 2020 Prices
