The Kings High School Newspaper, the
Knight Times, is up and running for the
year. They have widened their coverage
over the past few years and strive to be
a COMMUNITY publication, not just a
high school newspaper. The paper also
has a new web address this year. Check
them out at: khsknighttimes.com. They
also have a Facebook, Twitter, and soon
to come, an Instagram account. Pictured are the 2013-2014 the Knight Times Staff.
The next KHS Vol-
leyball home match
is Thursday, Sep-
tember 26th
against Loveland. It
will be the team’s
annual “Volley 4 a
Cause” match to
benefit Joshua’s
Place. The Volley-
ball team is unde-
feated at 10-0, with
it’s best start in
school history! The
team has chosen
green as the color
of the evening so be
sure to come
dressed in GREEN
and support the
team and help feed
our community by
supporting Josh-
ua’s Place at the
same time!
SLE Has a New Track!
There is something new at South Lebanon
Elementary...A new track! The track has
been named “The Sammy Track” in
memory of Sammy Reagan, the Kings stu-
dent who tragically lost her life in a car acci-
dent last January. Sammy was a tremendous
runner and loved the Flying Knight Program
at SLE. Next Friday, September 27th, SLE
will be having their first ever Walk-a-thon!
They will be breaking in the new track and walking by grade level. The students have
been collecting donations to support the SLE PTO. Some of the prizes the students are
vying for are lunch with Principal Willis, a visit from the Kona Ice Truck, a class party with
Circle Tail therapy dogs, and a popsicle party. All the fun starts next Friday at 10:30 a.m.

KMHS Class of 1963
The Kings Mills High School Class of
1963 celebrated their 50th class re-
union this past weekend with a
weekend full of activities. The class
met at the Kings Education Center,
formally known as Kings Mills High School, on Friday
evening before the football game to pay tribute to
the 12 deceased members of their class. To com-
memorate the deceased, classmates released white
balloons in their memory. The class attended Friday night’s football game against
Hamilton, had a picnic on Saturday, and a dinner on Saturday night at Valley Vine-
yards.
J.F. Burns PTO will be sponsoring 28 in-school educational
enrichment programs this school year. The first program
of the year, Crystal Clear Science, took place this week.
The theme was
entitled
“Project Hope.”
The students in
grades 3 and 4
learn through
hands-on expe-
rience with
help from KHS
Students, and
J.F. Burns
Alumni!
Special College Visits at KHS
This year, we have asked representatives from “special programs” at universities to come and speak to our
kids, in addition to the main admissions rep that typically comes. For example, we have speakers coming
from the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, Business, and Engineering at UC. They are each coming in sepa-
rately to speak with a targeted audience of kids who share an interest in that specific field. There are over
30 colleges/programs visiting KHS this year. At the end of the month, on September 27th,
the guidance office is taking the ENTIRE Junior Class to Mason High School for a giant col-
lege fair. There will be over 65 colleges and universities represented there. The KHS Guid-
ance Office has partnered with the Mason High School Guidance Office to make this hap-
pen. Follow the Guidance Office on Twitter-@KnightsGuidance.
Students in Tracy
Kleis’ 6th grade
classes at Columbia
Intermediate have
been involved in a
pilot program
called XBooks. It’s a
program through
Scholastic Books that uses five themes of increased com-
plexity through informational texts that build reading
skills, comprehension, and critical thinking. The program
incorporates our new Google Chromebooks and will also
help the students by learning electronically and preparing
them for when they have to take the state assessments
electronically.

The Staff at South Lebanon Elementary was treated to a catered lunch by Pitrelli’s last Friday in apprecia-
tion for their high marks on the State Report Card. SLE has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon
School of Excellence along with the high ratings from the ODE. Mrs. Janet Scruby, 4th grade teacher at
SLE said, “We have come a long way from
less than half of our students passing profi-
ciency tests in 2000, to the current expecta-
tion that all students will pass. The staff
takes a ‘no excuses’ approach to trying to
ensure that every student is successful. We
use our data collected as school starts and
throughout the year to identify and work
with students that need interventions for
targeted areas.”
Varsity Football Home Opener Last Friday
The first home football game of the season was last Friday night
and fun was had by all. The KHS Orchestra performed the National
Anthem to start the game off. At halftime, the
KHS PTO awarded Seniors Claire Sichterman and
Sean Whitehurst with an Academic Achievement
Award. The Red Sea was out in full force that even-
ing to watch the Varsity men beat Hamilton 28-7.

Columbia Elementary Has a NEW Name!
It’s Official! Columbia Elemen-
tary School will now be Columbia
Intermediate School. At the Sep-
tember Kings Board of Education
meeting, the vote was unani-
mous to make the official name change. Columbia
serves all Kings 5th and 6th graders and prepares
students in their transition to junior high school.
Columbia is the bridge between the elementary
buildings where all fifth graders join together for
the first time as Kings Knights. “Intermediate” best
represents the hard work and rigorous efforts that
take place at Columbia to get students ready for
the secondary campus. The staff is proud to be
officially CIS!

Preschool were treated
to a visit by Mr. Mike

yesterday. He brought
in an owl and a cave
snake for the students

sentatives. Pictured left is Parker

J. F Burns NFL Play 60
In celebrating the return of Ben-
gals and Kings football this year,
the students at J. F. Burns have
been involved in all kinds of activ-
ities and projects revolved around
the theme. NFL Play 60 is an NFL
campaign to encourage children
to be active at least 60 minutes a
day in order to reverse obesity trends. The Physical Education Department at
JFB is introducing NFL Play 60 into its fall lessons by teaching students why it
is important to be physically active throughout the day as well as their life-
times. The students in Mrs. Vermette’s art classes are finishing up their “Flat
Tiger” project taken from the “Flat Stanley” books concept. The students
have been hanging their tigers around the building and it has been fun for the
younger students to search for their “Flat Tiger.”
The students in Miss Flynn and Mrs. Krepps’ 4th grade classes have been
working on a mapping project in which
the students practice mapping the Ben-
gal’s team and its travels. Mrs. Jordan’s
classes use the Bengal’s player’s names
during their practice with spelling pat-
terns. Finally, last Friday, many of the
students wore their Bengals and Kings
football jerseys to celebrate.
JFB Magical Fall Fundraiser Update
If you forgot to turn in your dona-
tions for our Magical Fall Fundraiser,
it's not too late! Please send dona-
tions to school on Monday Sept
23rd. Donations collected through
Monday will count towards the indi-
vidual and classroom goals.
Bring donations to school in an en-
velope marked with your child’s
name/grade/teacher’s name. Clearly
marking the donations will ensure
they receive credit for the appropri-
ate prize(s). Checks should be made
payable to “JF Burns PTO.”
Remember, all money collected pays
for the 30+ in school programs that
JFB students attend throughout the
year. These programs are selected
by the teachers
to enhance cur-
riculum being
taught in the
classrooms.
