What is MOTOR ??MOTORS - Are devices that convert electrical energy to mechanical energy.

TRIVIA 101:The first electric motor came out as a result of an accident occurred at an exhibition in Vienna in 1873.

This is How Motor Works

When Current flows from a source and passes through the coils of the pole iron , it become a magnet. Both the pole iron and armature has the same polarity , causing them to repel to each other . This produces a half turn to the armature and enables the brush to in contact with another part of the commutator reversing the currents and so do the poles. The repulsion of two like poles enables the armature to continue to turn.

SINGLE PHASE MOTOR
From the name itself, it implies of operation on one phase.
This phase is often called the start phase or the auxiliary phase.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF SINGLE PHASE MOTORS ???

Shaded Pole Motor
![Page 10: Elementary Electrical Engineering](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062320/55c9a223bb61ebb0678b4849/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Split Phase Motor
![Page 11: Elementary Electrical Engineering](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062320/55c9a223bb61ebb0678b4849/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Permanent Split Capacitor Motor

How do these motors differs in performance trade-offs ?
• Split phase motors are generally low cost motors
• PSC motors offer higher starting torque
• Shaded pole motors are very simple motors

Applications:Applications include power tools, washing machines ,clothes dryer, electric sewing machine, electric fans, vacuum cleaners, fans, food processors.
