SPACE AND LANDSCAPE

does landscaping play in it?

The Element of Space is important

Planning in urban and suburban areas, space is important, as space is limited.

However, with good landscaping, the right impressions are brought out.

SPACIOUS

Page 12: Elements of Natural and Built Environment

Expansion is necessary, due to the limitation of existing SPACE, affecting the LANDSCAPE.

In suburban areas however, expansion is slower, space is enough, but landscaping is for different reasons.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Page 17: Elements of Natural and Built Environment

Infrastructure is basic physical and organizational structures needed for the operation of a society or enterprise or the services and facilities necessary for an economy to function.

It can be generally defined as the set of interconnected structural elements that provide framework supporting an entire structure of development.

NATURE

Page 22: Elements of Natural and Built Environment

What is Nature?

Nature is the natural occurring objects and phenomena that we find in our everyday lives. It ranges from things as small as an

atom to as big as the universe. Nearly everything that is NOT man - made is

considered as nature.

Page 23: Elements of Natural and Built Environment

Rural Nature in rural areas is easily found anywhere, however in the

area which we studied was a little bit different. The nature in the rural area we went to visit had very little

green nature, for example, grass, trees and bushes. There also weren't alot of natural landscapes, only a few ponds and

small streams here and there. However, in terms of wildlife, Pulau Ketam was teeming with it. There were different types of crabs, fish, birds, dogs, cats and even mudskippers littered

all over the island. The lack of greenery is most probably and mainly due to the fact that there is very little developable space in Pulau Ketam

and therefore the locals probably took as much of the land they could for development.

Sub - UrbanOut of the three place we visited, Nature, in terms of

greenery, in the sub - urban areas seem to be the most. There were plenty of fields of grass, trees and bushes. There were also quite a number of different landscapes such as streams and ponds, which was something that was lacking in Pulau Ketam. There

were plenty of diverse wildlife as well, dogs, cats and birds.

This is mainly due to the fact that people enjoy nature and is considered a pulling factor when it comes to migration from urban areas to rural and sub urban areas. Certain areas try to promote their areas by

producing or preserving more space for nature as a means to attract more residents.

Urban

There were quite a number of nature, in terms of greenery, in the urban area that we visited but not alot in terms of the biodiversity and natural landscape. There were alot of pots that contained trees and bushes littered all over the urban area.

BUILDING

Page 27: Elements of Natural and Built Environment

A building is a structure with a roof and walls.

E.g. houses, office buildings, schools.

Page 28: Elements of Natural and Built Environment

The rural site, Pulau Ketam, had buildings which were generally made out of wooden boards held together by nails. There were buildings, most of which were houses that were constructed from bricks and cement.

The buildings looked dilapidated and run-down. There were no high-rise buildings in sight. Buildings weren’t packed close together.

The buildings in the sub-urban area, Seskyen 11, had a comforting feeling of home. The houses in the area were surrounded by greenery and space. While it’s not modern, the houses were simple terrace houses, a few bungalows here and there and some basic flats. The buildings there weren’t extravagant or modern.

Sub-urban

Page 31: Elements of Natural and Built Environment
Page 32: Elements of Natural and Built Environment

The buildings at Jalan Sultan Ismail had a very sophisticated, professional look to them. Majority of them were made of glass and metal frames which gave them a very clean-cut and modern look.

Due to heavy congestion and more demand for space in the urban area, the buildings were compact and were within very close proximity of one another.
