Free Verse or Unrhymed Free Verse or Unrhymed VerseVerseFree verse or unrhymed poems do not rhyme or have regular rhythm.

American Walt Whitman was one of the first poets to publish free verse poems.

I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,

Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong,

The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam,

The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work…

~(From I Hear America Singing by Walt Whitman)

sounds in a poem (the beat).

RhythmRhythm and rhymerhyme can give poetry a musical quality.
