Elephant Aid International provides education and hands-on assistance to improve the lives of captive elephants worldwide.

Message from the Founder and President2015 was a year of completing one revolutionary project after another, refining existing designs and devising solutions to emerging new challenges.

• We completed our Chain Free Means Pain Free projects in Nepal and Thailand, releasing 59 more elephants from chains.

• In an important step toward long-term sustainability, EAI contracted with a highly qualified Nepali citizen to act as on-site manager of the Chain Free project.

• EAI gave biannual pedicures to nearly 200 private- and government-owned elephants near Chitwan National Park.

• We laid the groundwork to assist private elephant owners in Nepal with their conversion to chain free.

We also made headway in our search for land for a new elephant sanctuary in the United States. We expect to be able to report to you in this same space next year that work on its infrastructure has begun.

In 2016, EAI will work on two exciting projects that have implications throughout Asia. We will take Chain Free Means Pain Free into Phase Three, creating specially designed chain-free corrals strong enough to meet the demands of bull (male) elephants. And we will help Nepal’s oldest eco-tourism company revamp its program, making it eco-elephant friendly, educational and, most important, doing away with elephant back safaris and chains.

As always, EAI owes its success to the kind support of our loyal donors, business and funding partners, board, staff, interns, volunteers—and you.

Chain Free Means Pain Free Phase Two Completed This year, working side-by-side with Nepal’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, EAI and our team of international volunteers created 13 multi-acre chain-free corrals in two of the country’s largest government-run hattisars and released 20 elephants into compatible groups.

Lambodhar Prasad Project: Freeing Nepal’s Chain GangOf all elephants in captivity, perhaps males suffer the most. Because of their strength, combined with their volatility during musth (heightened testosterone levels), bulls lead chained lives of misery. Because the bulls’ tusks do not conduct electricity, they can easily dismantle solar-powered corrals, requiring a different solution to free them from chains.

In Nepal, nine ivory carrying bulls remain shackled in chains awaiting their freedom. In a first-of-its-kind pilot project, EAI will build a four-acre steel pipe enclosure within Chitwan National Park for the eldest of the bulls, 60-year-old Lambodhar Prasad. The corral will be a prototype suitable for duplication Asia-wide.

Making Chain Free Means Pain Free SustainableFor elephants to remain chain free, the solar-powered corrals must be operational at all times.

EAI has contracted with a monitoring and evaluation officer, Kulendra Kunwar, to oversee the maintenance and functionality of the chain-free corrals in Nepal. Kulendra, a highly qualified Nepali citizen, spent several weeks assisting with the construction of EAI’s solar powered chain-free corrals at the Khorsor hattisar. He will visit and inspect each chain-free enclosure in Chitwan National Park on a regular schedule, working alongside the mahouts to maintain the fences and make any necessary repairs.

Pachyderm PedicuresIn December, EAI founder Carol Buckley returned to Nepal to provide biannual pedicures for nearly 200 privately- and government-owned elephants near Chitwan National Park in collaboration with partner National Trust for Nature Conservation.Carol, worked with one-time intern, now professional care partner, Kiran Rijal, trimming feet and instructing mahouts about foot health. Several foreign veterinarians and elephant keepers who wanted to develop their foot trimming skills interned with EAI on the trip. Foot care is essential to keeping captive-held elephants healthy; EAI is the only NGO that provides this vital service.

Chain Free in ThailandAfter nearly two years of preparation and numerous challenges—including shipping materials from New Zealand and two attempts to get the Indian fence building crew through Thai immigration—EAI installed the first solar powered chain-free corrals in Thailand. The corrals are located at two of the country’s most highly respected and progressive elephant facilities: Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary (BLES) and Friends of the Asian Elephant Hospital (FAE). In all, 17 elephants were released to a new life of freedom and autonomy.

Carol: A Woman Changing the Planet In November, Care2 named Carol Buckley one of nine women who are saving the planet. The article cited the women, who include Jane Goodall; The Black Mombas, young women who protect wildlife in South Africa; oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle; Gabriella Cowperwaith, director of “Blackfish”; Cindy Lowry, activist for oceans and their wildlife; fashion designer Stella McCartney; and Suzy Amis Cameron, sustainability advocate, for their work as leaders of the animal rights and environmental movements.

EAI to Redesign Elephant Program at Top Nepali Tourist ResortTiger Tops, Nepal’s oldest eco-tourism company and a leader in conservation efforts in Chitwan, has asked Carol to guide them in transforming their elephant program.

Tiger Tops will be the first private company in Nepal to do away with elephant-back safaris. Instead, visitors will learn about elephants by accompanying them on their daily outings and jungle explorations.

Carol has already designed chain-free corrals for the 12 elephants, and will assist the mahouts as they transition from traditional dominance management to the positive reinforcement approach of Compassionate Elephant Care. She will also teach the mahouts proper foot care techniques.

EAI in the NewsEAI and its work were covered by many national and international outlets, including The Economic Times, TakePart, Kathmandu Post, Gulf Times, news.com.au, MyNorthwest.com, Ecorazzi, Bangkok Post, Offut Air Force Base, Omaha.com, Live Encounters magazine, Care2, Validity magazine and Psychology Today. EAI’s influence has simultaneously taken hold in the Asian culture of elephant management. While the concept of training elephants humanely and allowing them to live chain free was initially rejected, both are now becoming mainstream concepts, just as they did in the western world not so long ago.

Our MissionElephant Aid International (EAI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was founded by Carol Buckley in 2010 to create a paradigm shift that will foster change in beliefs and approaches to the care and management of elephants throughout the world.

With the combined international efforts of scientists, veterinarians, mahouts (elephant handlers), elephant caregivers and elephant welfare supporters, EAI is helping to change how the public relates to elephants; how mahouts and elephant caregivers train elephants; and how captive elephants are cared for worldwide.

EAI has pioneered a new system, Compassionate Elephant Care, which will eliminate antiquated, dominance-based training and result in improved elephant welfare.

By providing education and hands-on assistance, EAI is working to end the worldwide suffering of elephants…one elephant at a time.

Our Goals • Improve the conditions of captivity in which elephants live and eliminate abusive training and management.

• Create alternatives to the use of chaining as a form of management.

• Train mahouts in positive management techniques so they can better care for and manage their elephants. • Improve the social status of mahouts through education and job advancement.

• Remove begging elephants from the streets of Asia by finding alternative livelihoods for mahouts and their families.

• Facilitate the establishment of lifetime care centers (sanctuaries).

Our Projects • Building chain-free enclosures to eliminate the antiquated and physically harmful practice of chaining elephants’ feet to the ground.

• Providing elephant pedicures and training mahouts in the skills necessary to support foot health and prevent life-threatening osteomyelitis.

• Increasing mahouts’ knowledge of elephant biology, psychology, behavior and learning style to help them develop more positive interpersonal relationships with their elephants.

• Working with government agencies and NGOs to create permanent elephant care and retirement facilities.

• Improving elephant stable sanitation.

• Establishing a new elephant sanctuary in the United States.
