    Dear Naresh,

Promotions for the Elephant Festival, which will beheld on 26 March in Jaipur, indicate that thecelebration will include cruel events such as elephantpolo, an elephant race, a tug of war betweenelephants and humans and Holi played on the backsof elephants!

The permission required from the Animal WelfareBoard of India under the Performing Animals(Registration) Rules in The Prevention of Crueltyto Animals Act, 1960, has not been granted for theuse of these elephants.

Although it is illegal to beat and torture animals under

The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960,elephants kept in captivity and used for variouspurposes are trained through beatings and the constant threat of punishment with a stick or an iron ankus(a rod with a sharp metal hook on the end). A Rajasthan High Court order prohibits the use of an ironankus but still permits it to be carried, making enforcement of the order nearly impossible. It also allowsthe use of a wooden ankus. Iron ankuses can still be found in the hands of most mahouts who controlworking elephants in Jaipur they are often kept under cloth near the elephant's neck or in seating boxesplaced on the elephants' backs. Elephants in Jaipur often exhibit wounds from being hit or jabbed.

Please urge officials to end this mistreatment of elephants by writing or calling them today:
