Advantages

• Modular construction

• Housing made completely ofcorrosion-resistant material

• Simple replacement of lamps through quick-action closure

ApplicationThe elevated lights of the RTO 25

series are omnidirectional lights for use

on commercial airports, commercial

landing strips, military airfields and heli-

pads. The lights are specified for opera-

tion in accordance with CAT I-III

depending on the respective application.

The modular construction makes a mul-

tipurpose application of the lights possi-

ble and reduces logistic costs.

Typical fields of application are e.g.

runway edge, taxiway edge, overrun

area, stopbar and - on non-ICAO air-

ports - threshold/runway end (threshold

on ICAO airports is a typical application

for the Modular High Intensity Approach

Light System ATR). Furthermore, the

light RTO 25 is also used as a low-inten-

sity light in conjunction with the ATR

system and as obstruction light with

LED technique. For further details

please refer to the associated

brochures.

Modern design methods and the use

of first rate materials and production

processes made it possible to meet the

requirements with regard to a high quali-

ty, reliable function and easy handling.

ConstructionThe multi-purpose RTO 25 consists of two main assemblies:

• Upper part

• Lamp holder

The upper part consists of the light housing or flange, outer and (ifrequired) inner lens and lens retaining nut. The metal lamp holder is thesupporting structure of the RTO 25 featuring the seat for the lamp, theFAA connecting cable and combined clamping/adjustment facilities formounting on a breakable coupling or tube.

The flange consists of glass fibre reinforced plastic (polycarbonate). The plastic has a high temperature stability, is resistant to ultraviolet raysand, as an absolutely corrosion-resistant material, has the best propertiesfor outside use.

The color of the flange and the lens retaining nut is effected throughdye penetration of the material similar to aviation yellow (RAL 1006). Thissaves any correction of the color on the light even after severe mechanicalimpact.

Thermal glass lenses with integrated optics are used to meet the techni-cal lighting requirements. The lenses are clear or colored according to theintended application. If internal lenses are required for optical reasons - asin the runway area - then, in some cases, the internal lens is colored.

If an omnidirectional beam, as for runway edge lights is not desired, anexternal glass lens with a shading finishing coat is used for STB (stop bar)and RGL (runway guard light). The glass lenses are fitted on the flange bymeans of the lens retaining nut. Due to the fact that the retaining nut andflange are made of plastic, the lens can be fastened without elastic interme-diate rings. A sealing ring is not required between lens and flange due toan integrated drainage system. Both penetrating water and condensationwater is safely collected by this drainage system and is drained off viadrainage channels and holes. This open housing concept thus ensures per-manent ventilation of the light and prevents condensation.

The flange and the lens retaining nut are identical for all applications. The flange is attached to the lamp holder.

The lamp holder carries a 6.6A pre-focussed halogen lamp(PK 30d base). The halogen lamp is fixed in the lamp holder bymeans of a slit laminated spring and can easily be replaced with-out tools. The power consumption of the halogen lamp useddepends on the intended application of the light.

The lamp holder is made of an aluminum alloy which, apartfrom its corrosion resistance, also ensures a good heat dissipa-tion from the lamp base. The lights are mounted on mechanical, breakable couplings in the runway and taxiway area which alsoinclude an electrical connection separating on impact. All smallparts used in the light such as screws, washers etc. are made ofnon-corrosive high-grade steel. The flange and the lamp holderare connected by a bayonet fixing mechanism, which was espe-cially developed for this purpose.

Function The special form of the lamp holder enables an

easy mounting and adjustment of the light at itslocation of installation by 3 clamping screws. Toreplace the lamp, the upper part of the light, consist-ing of flange, lens retaining nut and refractors/lensescan be removed from the lamp holder by applying aslight pressure to the top of the lens and turning itslightly anti-clockwise. This newly developed quick-action locking mechanism enables a particularly fastand easy access to the lamp for relamping.

Installation/assembly The RTO 25 light is designed in such a way that

it can be set up at airports, airfields etc. using stan-dard assembly elements such as

• Base plate and breakable coupling

• Column

• Elbow conduit

• Glass fibre reinforced plastic masts

The modular system of the RTO 25 elevatedlight has the advantage of a simple assembly for the

aforementioned fields of application (see chart). All parts havethe same construction with the exception of the glassdomes/lenses and lamps.

AccessoriesFor using the light as a runway edge and taxiway edge light

(REH and TXE), a day marker made of plastic is available witha visible surface subdivided into red and white segments. Thisscreen is placed onto the base plate without any additionalmechanical fastening. The day marker is held in positionbetween the RTO-flange and the base plate. The day marker hasan extremely high stability under load as a result of the largearea support both on the base plate and also on the RTO-flange.
