Elia Middle School is named after the original farming communityof Elia. It is a school with a highly diverse student population. In2011, Elia became part of the Model Schools for Inner CityProgram. We achieve student success through the Five EssentialComponents for Model Schools. They are Innovative Teachingand Learning; Support Services to meet the social, emotional andphysical well-being of students; Embracing School as the Heart ofthe Community; Participating in Research, review and evaluationof students and program; and Sharing Best Practises. We value astrong partnership between our students, staff, parentsand community. 

School Focus for This SchoolYearOur school focus for the 2019-2020school year is improving studentachievement in Literacyand Numeracy. We havean emphasis on cultivating a safe andcaring environment, as well asPathways, by ensuring smooth transitions from Feeder Schools toMiddle School and from Middle School to Secondary Schools.These transitions will ensure that students areadequately prepared to meet their academic needs in receivingsecondary schools. We are also using STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) projects and a richoffering of Arts opportunities to increase student engagement,and to raise student achievement across the grades.

Sports at Elia Middle SchoolElia's Health and Physical Education programs are designed tomeet the physical needs of students by promoting physical fitnessand life long learning on important health issues.  We offer a varietyof extra-curricular activities. Among these activities are Girls andBoys Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Dance, Badminton and UltimateFrisbee.

Technology at EliaElia students are exposed to the use of technology in the classroomthrough the use of computers, tablets and Promethean boardsduring instructional time. Students use technology to expand theirknowledge and skills across the curriculum. Some of the areas thatthey explore using information technology are: literacy, media,numeracy and other interrelated subjects. 

Special EducationAt Elia we offer a Special Education program called Home SchoolProgram (HSP) for students who are identified using a formal reviewprocess.The committee that identify students' exceptionalities andreviews students' progress is called an Identification, Placementand Review Committee (IPRC). Our teachers deliver differentiatedprograms to support a variety of learners.

Community PartnershipsElia works with community partners to enrich students learningexperiences throughout the years. We are pleased to  continue ourpartnerships with  the Hammer Band, York University, TheAchievers afterschool program, TDSB Model Schools, Public Healthand other community agencies to promote student success.

Elia's students are actively involved in a variety of  academicand student success programs. These programs includeScience Fairs, Robotics Competitions, Spelling Bee,Mathematics Competitions and Debate Competitions. Ourstudents also attend conferences such as:Young Women on the Move, Dare to Dream, Me to We,Empowered Student Program, Voices Speak Up, FutureTeachers Symposium and Financial Literacy.Lastly, we have one of the most diverse teaching staff thatreflects the population of our students. The diversity of ourfaculty and students provide an environment in which allstudents have role models that will stimulate them to followtheir dreams.

Parent and Community Engagement

Elia works in partnership with San Rowmanoway RevitalizationAssociation, North York Harvest Food Bank, Hincks-DellcrestCentre and 31Division Police to build community relationships topromote essential skills that fosters good citizenship. Ourschool uses the expertise of parents and other agencies thatsupport our efforts in promoting high student achievement, studentsafety and partnership with home and school. Our staff worksclosely with community agencies  such as, the Vision Clinic andPublic Health to provide a full range of services to our students andtheir families. We have a Settlement Worker who works out of ourschool two days per week. The Settlement program is a communitybased partnership program that provides new students and parentswith orientation sessions, referrals to settlement agencies,resources, translation, interpretation and much more.
