Technology Presentation
How it started?
• Focus on better vision
• Understand how the eye works
• Understand how light works
What is light? Light is measured and expressed in lumen (light intensity) and lux (light
per square meter
Quality of light is measured and expressed in Color Rendering Index (CRI)
The current standard – lighting defined 1931
The eye sensitivity curve V(λ) is based on measurement at photopic light level measured with a 2° view angle (foveal). CIE standard 1931.
The cones in the eye can see light from blue to deep red with
the highest sensitivity in the green/yellow area. 1Watt energy
converted 100% efficient into light results in 683 lumen.
Functioning of the eye is different for Outdoor vs Indoor
Day-light is a sum/ mix of colors
Light is all about understanding the eye
Light is reflected
onto the retina,
signals are being
send to the brain
via the optic nerve
using Cones and
Rods.
The eye needs colors, but the right colors: Ellipz uses RED+GREEN to create white light
In the center part of the retina the
‘sensors’ are the Cones and in the
peripherie one uses the Rods. Cones
are 96% RED+GREEN.

Spectra of LED lamps - INDOOR
Lumiled, Nichia, Osram white LED 5000K T8, 5400K, 102 lm/W, CRI 95, S/P 2.2
Eye-sensitivity curve for the cones = photopic light/day-light. and the
measurement ‘line’ for CRI.
Other industry players (white leds) have a peak at 450Nm due to usage of 3p
and 4p phosphors and therefore have lower CRI and poorer light experience
(cold light).
Ellipz unique combination of Red and Green LEDs provides a different
spectrum leading to higher CRI ratios and higher efficacy (lm/w).

A new TECHNOLOGY on light
LIGHT & LIFE
Life exists because there is light.
However, our Sun gave us full spectrum of light, which not all are
harmless. Especially the high energy spectrum such as Gamma and X-
Ray are very hazardous. We also know that UV is not good of us if
exposed to it for a long period of time, and to a certain extend Blue
Light as well. HazardHigh Energy Light!
BLUE LIGHT & HUMAN VISION
As such, giving only blue light to our eyes will not give us sharp and detailed vision.
An artistic project in Amsterdam is stopped as it is potentially creating dangerous traffic situations because of the very blur vision.
In addition the energy level
of blue light is affecting the retina and various studies has shown indications that blue light may cause damage to the eye.
Cannot see much if only blue light !
This is the typical spectrum of a
standard LED. The blue component contains high energy.

AMD & BLUE LIGHT
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a major health problem in the developed world accounting for approximately half of all blind registrations.
In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the effects blue light entering the eye has on the production of Radical Oxygen Species(ROS) in photoreceptor cells and in the adjacent Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) cells. As well, there is an increased understanding of the cumulative effects that blue light absorption in the outer retina has on increasing the level of oxidative stress and resulting chronic inflamation of the outer retina associated with the development of AMD. This has led a number of researchers to recommend that people reduce their lifetime exposure to blue light, whether from sunlight or artificial sources. This article discuss the growing understanding of the mechanisms by which blue light exposure may contribute to the development of AMD. The discussion on the influence of blue light on the pathogenesis of AMD that follows below was written a few years ago. This discussion is still valid. The points made are supported by more recent publications.

AMD accounts for 50% of all blind registrations in the developed world. And Blue Light is a main contributor to the problem!

Hazards of blue light
In Short
Over exposure to UV and Blue Lights is harmful.
1) UV light is high energy light and promote aging of all material on over exposure.
2) Blue light does not provide sharp vision.
3) The older we get, the less we can see with Blue Light. Worse though is that it
means children are less protected when exposed to high amount of blue light
4) Blue Light potentially causes AMD (Age related Macular Degeneration).
Ellipz was the first to use Red and Green (RBP)
White leds are based on blue chips with 3 or 4 phosphors mixed (Phosphor conversion, Nakamura concept. Ellipz started Led lighting based on bare chips (no phosphors),In 2005 Ellipz presented the first light source based on green phosphor with red chips.

Industry recognized the power of red and green only recently

Sustainability is in Ellipz’ DNAThe sustainability of a lamp is
not determined by the
energy consumption only.
Good LED products offer 80
to 90% energy reduction.
However, the CO2 footprint
and lifetime are equally or
even more important !
Light product weight, low
energy in production and
high quality to meet world
class and savings.
Quality is key! LCA
