Welcome

Welcome to the 2019 Eltham High School Mid Year Concert

Our vision for the Eltham High School Music Department is to continue to nurture and promote a life-long love for music and the creative process. Our Music Department enjoys incredible support within the school and the community, which allows our program to be one of the strongest Instrumental Music Programs in Australia. All ensembles are built around a strong sense of community, dedication and pride. We thank you for your continued support as it allows us the wonderful opportunity of seeing our students grow and develop personally through their involvement in the music program.

2019 has already been an extremely successful year for our extra-curricular music program, and tonight is our opportunity to share with you the great music that has been created during each rehearsal. This is an extremely exciting night for our Training Band and Junior Strings, as they take the stage for the very first time. The energy of the musicians during the first ten rehearsals has been very enthusiastic and they are already creating some fantastic ensemble sounds. We look forward to seeing them develop throughout the year.

The Stage Band and Jazz Band worked extremely hard in preparation for the Generations in Jazz National Awards in May. They had a great weekend and were proud of their performances. Stage Band finished 4th in Division 1, acknowledging them as one of the best School Big Bands in the country. Congratulations also to the Jazz Band for receiving tenth place in their very competitive division of the competition.

Tonight we farewell Ed Fairlie who has been a part of the Eltham High School Community for more than 10 years. Ed started at Eltham as our Trumpet Teacher and Stage Band Director, and over the years he has become an important member of our ensemble program conducting the Concert Band, Junior Jazz Band and Jazz Choir. He has also worked with students behind the scenes to improve their knowledge of Jazz by running sessions with our rhythm sections and improvisation classes. Under his direction all of the ensembles have achieved greatness, as he is always choosing unique repertoire that brings out the best in the students.

Perhaps the biggest impact Ed has had on our community is the music that he has composed for us. The front cover of this program features some of the beautiful and creative works that Ed has composed or arranged for our ensembles. Each piece has encapsulated the emotion and meaning behind the music, inspiring our musicians and the audiences that experience his music. Many of the works have now gone on to be published by some of the biggest companies in the world, which is a testament to the music that Ed writes.

We wish Ed all the best for his future, both personally and in his career, as he takes the time to focus even more on his composing. We look forward to playing many of his works in the future and seeing his music performed on the world stage.

Give our musicians the tools they need to learn

Here are some examples, in no particular order, of new instruments that we will need to purchase over the next 5 years as more students join the Instrumental Music Program. All profits from our concerts, raffles and the Mudbrick Tour go towards purchasing these instruments each year.

Friends of Music

Friends of Music actively represents all parents with children in the instrumental and choral programs at Eltham High School by providing support to the music program with organisation of music related events with stage management, catering, equipment transport and other activities.

The group also engages in fundraising activities to assist with the purchase of instruments, equipment, guest artists, and to provide some professional development for staff.

Meeting dates depend on the events of the music calendar but usually number two per term to arrange event support. These are advised through email to those parents who have indicated an interest in the group. The meetings are relaxed, friendly and new members are always most welcome.

We welcome any participation from parents - the more volunteers, the easier events run and the less number of times your assistance is required during the year. Can’t make it to meetings? Our children benefit directly from your involvement and support by ensuring the music program maintains its excellence and encouragement of the students.

We invite members of the school community to register as volunteers to help run this iconic cultural event. We need help on the day with a variety of tasks but mostly with visitor supervision at the houses. This is a great chance to support the music program and our talented young musicians.
