EM770W UMTS M2M Wireless Module Product Description

RF EXPOSURE & ELECTRICAL SAFETY COMPLIANCE

The use of this device in any other type of host configuration may not comply with the RF exposure requirements and should be avoided. During operation, a 20 cm separation distance should be maintained between the antenna, whether extended or retracted, and the user’s/bystander’s body (excluding hands, wrists, feet, and ankles) to ensure RF exposure compliance. The modem is not designed for, nor intended to be, used in applications within 20 cm (8 inches) of the body of the user. Continued compliance of the equipment relies upon it being used with an AS/NZS 60950.1 approved SELV power supply.

CAUTIONChange or modification without the express consent of Maxon Electronics Australia Pty. Ltd. voids the user’s authority to use the equipment. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in an appropriate installation. The modem is a transmitting device with similar output power to a mobile phone. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not used in accordance with instructions, can cause harmful radiation to radio communication. Use only the supplied or an approved antenna. Unauthorized antennas, modi-fications, or attachments could impair call quality, damage the device, or result in violation of RF exposure regulations. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If the equipment does cause harmful interference in radio and television reception, which can be deter-mined by turning the equipment on and off, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:

Re-orient or relocate the receiving radio or TV antenna Increase the separation distance between the equipment and the receiver Contact Maxon Australia Technical Support for assistance.

Main and diversity antenna interfaces There are three different kinds of antenna interfaces on the DEMO board, for both of main and auxiliary ones.

The One is TS-5 coaxial switch connector receptacle which is as follows:

The second one is a female switchable connector used to switch signal between internal antenna and external inspection equipment, which is as follows:

The third one is a male RF coaxial connector, which is straight, as follows:

COM1 for RS232 serial port This RS232 serial port is an 8-wired full serial port, supporting high speed. This RS232 port can be connected to the RS232 port of PC directly. The signal information of this interface is shown as follows:

5

Page 13: Em770w Demo Board Guide 1.02

Note:

DSR (Data Set Ready) signal is not supported in this RS232 serial port. The COM1 supports data services. When EST1 signal in EM770W module is pulled down to

GND, COM1 is used for debugging only.

COM2 for RS232 serial port This RS232 serial port is 5-wired, which is as follows:

This port can also be connected to the RS232 port of PC directly.

Phone interface A single-port internet interface connector is provided on the DEMO board, which can be connected to the phone handle.

When EST1 signal in EM770W module is pulled down to GND, COM2 can not be used.

Earphone interface A 2.5mm earphone jack is provided on the DEMO board, which is as follows:

The signal distribution of this interface is as follows:

Three different kinds of antenna interface are supported on the DEMO board of EM770W. After connecting the antenna interfaces of EM770W with its DEMO board interfaces through two cables provided in the EM770W packing box, the MAIN and diversity antennas also can be connected from the DEMO board.

Note:

Insert the antenna connectors vertically into the antenna interfaces of the EM770W. Do not pinch the antenna cable or damage the connectors. Otherwise, the wireless

performance of the EM770W may be reduced or the EM770W cannot work normally. Ensure that the antenna cables are routed well and do not lay across the raised edges of

the frame. 4. Select and connect the interface(s) needed as follows Insert the USIM/SIM card into the SIM socket. Connect the COM1 or COM2 to the serial port of PC or other master device. Connect the Mini USB to the USB port of PC or other master device. Insert the earphone into the earphone interface. Insert the phone port into the phone interface.

Note:

Mini USB interface can be used to supply the power of the DEMO board, so once connect the Mini USB, the EM770W will be powered on.

5. Insert the external power supply, which nominal voltage is 5V.

Note:

If Mini USB is used, the power of USB can supply the 5V power to the DEMO board, and the external 5V Power supply can be unused.

8

Page 16: Em770w Demo Board Guide 1.02

Removing the EM770W from the Main Board of the customer device 1. Disconnect the 5V external power supply from the DEMO board. If the 5V power of the

DEMO board is supplied from the Mini USB, disconnect the Mini USB port instead. 2. Disconnect the used interface(s) from the DEMO board. 3. Disconnect the antenna cables from the EM770W. You can lift the connectors with a small

screwdriver. If the antenna cables are connected from the DEMO board, disconnected the short cables which are using for connecting the EM770W and its DEMO board.

4. Slide backwards the two clips to release the EM770W from the slot. Then, lift up the

EM770W.
