Unbelievable! Already one month into 2016!The New Year represents a new beginning, a fresh start and another
chance to make this year better than last. With the correct planning
and discipline it can still be achieved in the next eleven months. This
inspiration compels us to constantly focus on our New Year’s resolutions
to become a better parent, to have more patience, to live healthier and
respect your fellow residents. It is good to improve yourself by making
the most of 2016. We trust that everyone’s expectations for the New Year
are still on a high and the Board of Directors and Management wish each
and every resident a healthy, prosperous and blessed year ahead. May all
your New Year’s resolutions materialise.
Numerous projects and improvements were finalised during last year and
we appreciate the compliments received in this regard. Many hours were
spent to uplift the Estate facilities as well as maintenance and upgrading
on electrical and irrigation projects. The newly formed Ad-Hoc Safety
Committee identified and took special care to address some risk areas
in the Estate in order to prevent possible breaching of the boundary wall
electric fence. New visual technology improvements and developments
are constantly being investigated to enhance the safety measures of the
Estate.

Eco-Friendly Water Heaters / Geysers.
You may not realize it but water heating is probably one of the largest
domestic energy expenses on your utility bill. By replacing your old electric
hot water system with a new gas or solar powered system, you will do
wonders to reduce your carbon footprint and your monthly costs.
When you look for a water heater, it is best to look for one that is ENERGY
SAVING certified. ENERGY SAVING systems criteria for water heaters
cover five residential product categories: high-performance gas storage;
whole-house gas tankless; advanced drop-in or integrated heat pump;
solar; and gas condensing. By heating water only when it’s needed, ENERGY
SAVERS qualified gas tankless water heaters cut water-heating expenses
by 30%, while also providing continuous hot water delivery. Gas tankless
models are a great choice for new construction and major remodeling, but
are also becoming popular as a replacement for gas storage water heaters.
Whenever you’re replacing a worn-out existing water heater/geyser or
looking for the best model for a new house you’re building, you will be
wise to choose carefully.

GROWING VEGETABLES IN THE GARDEN (Part 2)

SOIL PREPARATION & FERTILISINGDecide on a suitable sunny area in
your garden and create an edge to
your vegetable patch. Stones, bricks
or wood will be good choices.
You have to be able to reach the
plants without walking in the bed
and compacting the soil. Pag

and return the topsoil. Continue in this way until
the vegetable patch is completely tilled. The soil
surface will be higher than the surrounding path.
This is the only time that your vegetable garden
will be trenched. You will not dig again.
A suitable fertiliser (preferably organic) is added
to the holes of seedlings.
Do not add fertiliser when sowing seed.

Plant care
Seed need to be kept moist at all times to allow germination. Transplanted seedlings needtobewateredwellafterplanting,butdo not overwater in the days that follow.
Cover your vegetable garden with bird netting to prevent damage. When the seed that germinated (or the seedlings transplanted ) have grown at least 4 leaves,liquid fertiliser can be applied on a weekly basic. Rather apply a weak solution every seven days, than a strong solution once per month. Fertiliser granules are used (according to instructions) to top-dress the soil surface e.g:
• Flowering and fruiting crops: cucumber, beans, tomato: ApplyVitafruit&flower3:1:5.• Leafy greens: Lettuce, Swiss chard: Apply Vita veg 6:3:4 • Roots and bulbs: onion, carrots: Apply Vita green 5:1:5
Compost is added to the surface regularly, to supply nutrients, create a mulch and improve the soil structure. Do not till, only remove weeds if needed.
Inter-planting
This will prevent diseases from spreading and allow more economic use of the available space.

When you plant two different varieties of seedlings inone bed work out the average spacing between plants to ensure a proper harvest, e.g. lettuce - 20cm, onion - 15cm. The average would be 17.5cm apart.
Crop rotationDo not plant the same vegetable in the same spot the following year. Swop the varieties around and only repeat once in three years.
Pests and diseasesUse insecticides sparingly and use only organic products. Remember you want to eat the vegetables.
Garden tip– Use scissors to snip beans off the stalk. Pulling will damage the plant.
