From the
Dear Parents
It is a very special week for our school with our Year 6 students and children from the parish celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation. The sacrament is important as it is an opportunity for the students to ‘confirm’ the commitment made by their parents to and for them at Bap-tism. Bishop Donald Sproxton visited the children this week and will preside over the Mass this Friday. We wish the children and their families all the best and thank the staff of Sacred Heart and the parish catechists for their work in preparing the students.
Last week the children in Year 3 and children from the parish received the Sacrament of First Reconciliation. This was a lovely ceremony and the children and congregation were respectful and reverent thus leading to a very holy and spiritual experience for the children. I thank Ms Gevaux and Mr Milne for their preparation of the students as well as the parish catechists. Mrs Fragapane has been coordinating all of our sacraments and thus has been very busy. I thank her for her commitment and dedication.
I have had the pleasure of attending our school choir performance in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival this week. The children sang beautifully and received very good feedback from the adjudicator. Congratulations to Mrs Christina Vinci, all of the hard work and many extra hours on Thursday mornings are much appreciated.
Congratulations to Emily Smith and Caitlyn Reid who raised $432.80 for Cancer research by organising our Daffodil Day. They did a wonderful job and I commend them for their efforts.
Luca Sorgiovanni has been accepted into Kent Street Senior High School’s CoRE select entry program. Luca performed to a high standard in the testing and I congratulate him on his placement. Well done, Luca!
The process for appointing Assistant Principals at Sacred Heart has concluded and I am hap-py to announce that Mr Shane Landers and Mrs Lisa Ripley are the successful candidates. Shane is currently Acting Assistant Principal at Sacred Heart and Lisa joins us from St Jo-seph’s in Pinjarra where she is currently Assistant Principal.
Starting next week parents, staff and children will complete a survey that will provide the school with valuable information about where the school is doing well and where there are some opportunities for growth. A letter will come home next week with instructions on how to access the survey. There will also be some paper copies available in the office.
I am currently concluding interviews for Kindergarten for 2020. Please ensure that if you are an existing family you have completed enrolment forms for siblings.
This week’s Parenting Ideas article is linked to Father’s Day and is for the Dads and other male role models in our children’s lives. I hope you enjoy the read and get spoiled this week-end!

Leaving your fathering mark
Currently, there’s a strong tendency to view successful fathering through the lens of skills and knowledge acquisition. That is, to raise kids today effective fathers, like mothers, need to keep building their skill sets (What’s the most appropriate way to manage kids today?) and their knowledge (What’s the latest research about the impact of digital technology on children?). Staying one step ahead can be exhausting and make a man feel inadequate if he can't keep up.
Another way to look at fathering is through the generative parenting lens. That is, fathering is an activity that's rooted in a man's biology in much the same way that mothering is an instinctive activity. If the moth-ering instinct is to nurture and protect children, a father's instinct is to teach and develop his children's skills and knowledge so they can thrive long after the time he's left this world.
The generative fathering notion developed by researchers Dollahite, Hawkens and Brotherson explains why many men will turn a simple game they have with their children into a lesson into how to hold a ball; defeat that opponent or stand firm in the face of fear. Father-son relationships can be scuppered by this well-intentioned, but oft mistimed 'you can always get better' attitude.
Generative fathers tend to look long term when they raise their kids. Quintessentially, generative fathers work hard to be good men and good citizens. Love, availability and character become their fathering stock in trade.
Generative fathers keep pace with their children's development adjusting their role at different stages. For instance, during a child's latency (primary school years) they focus on recreational work and so they help develop children's interests and competencies through sport, hobbies and leisure activities. The task for gen-erative fathers of early adolescents is to help their children develop strong values and inner beliefs. This spir-itual work (not necessarily in a religious sense) helps young people develop the moral compasses they need to act safely and be good citizens when fathers aren't around.
For generative parents, fathering becomes a lifelong task, and doesn't stop when children become adults, leave home and start families of their own. It is in this stage that men take on mentoring work, passing on the wisdom gained from their experiences to the next generation so that they don't repeat the same mis-takes that they have made. Fathering never stops. It changes with the development of your children.
This Father’s Day, while enjoying the accolades and attention that will come your way consider the genera-tional impact you are having on your kids.
Your lasting fathering legacy will be determined by the character you display; the way you live your life and how you relate to your family. Those are attributes that you can continue to work on over the coming twelve months.
You will find more information about generative fathering “A Man's guide to raising kids” at www.parentingideas.com.au
A PRAYER FOR FATHERS
Heavenly Father,
We praise you for the gift of our fathers and
those who have been father-figures to us.
We thank you for the life and love they have
brought to our world.
May they be strengthened in virtue and faith so
that they might give glory to you through their
lives of service.
Amen.

RUGBY LEAGUE TAG COMPETITION On Tuesday 13 August a small group of Year 5 & 6’s competed in a
Rugby League Tag Tournament at Santich Park in Munster. Seven other
schools competed in the tournament with us.
23 Students competed across two teams, an A team and a B team. Sa-
cred Heart B team played 7 games through the group stage, winning 1,
losing 1 and drawing 5. Overall, they finished 5th and played Christ The
King, who finished 6th, in a final. That final ended as a draw, 1-1.
Our A team went through the group stage undefeated, winning 6
games and drawing 1, finishing first out of the 8 schools. They played
Christ The King in the grand final, winning the game 2-0 and bringing
home the shield. Both teams tried their best and played with great re-
spect towards their opponents. Congratulations to all the students who
represented Sacred Heart. In the words of our A team captains, Dion
and Raphael, “GO SACRED HEART!!!”

Father’s Day Stall
We hope your child/ren loved picking something special from the Father’s Day Stall. Any leftover stock will be sold at lunch time on Friday 30 August. We wish all dad’s, granddads and father figures a wonderful Father’s Day on Sunday. We hope you enjoy your present.
A Father’s Day raffle will be held and drawn at the Father’s Day Breakfast on Friday 30 August. Tickets will be $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00. Good luck!
End of School Disco
This term the P&F are organising a School’s Out Disco for the children on Friday 20 September. There
will be two discos, one for lower school and one for upper school, all details are on the attached poster
and a booking form will be coming home with each child this week. Forms and money are due back by
Wednesday 18 September.
PLEASE NOTE: There will be no food sold at the Disco. The kids will receive a bag of popcorn when
they leave.
The thinking behind it is that the Junior School will most likely eat dinner after their Disco and the up-
per school will eat their dinner/light meal before the Disco. We didn't want to worry about dinner/food
items, more so just a good old dance and games for the kids.
Thank you very much for Mrs Brunt’s Year 5 class for creating a poster for us to use to promote the
Disco as part of a class project. There were some fabulous designs and it was very hard to choose just
1 winner. Congratulations to Lila Woollams for creating the winning poster, which is attached to this
newsletter. Thank you to all students who submitted a Poster, your designs will be used around the
school.
P&F Nominations We would like to encourage all Sacred Heart parents to consider joining the 2020 P&F Committee. We have a lot of fun brainstorming ideas, collaborating and organising events for our school community to raise much needed funds. We meet once per month, where everyone is welcome and encouraged to share their ideas. We are always looking for new ideas and help, so would love to see you join the P&F Committee. All positions are open for President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer, so if you see yourself in one of these roles, feel free to come along to a meeting to see what the role entails, talk to a Commit-tee Member today or e-mail the P&F at [email protected].
