Is The GPSMAP496 Right For You?

Garmin’s introduction of the

GPSMAP496 earlier this year has created quite a dilemma for many GPSMAP396 own-

ers. To upgrade or not?

In making this decision, let’s first look at the 496. Basi-

cally, the 496 is a super-charged 396 with more mem-ory and a higher performance

display. With more memory, the 496 offers more airport information including: airport taxiways, private airport, the entire AOPA Airport Database and the larger memory ca-

pacity also allows for storage of the entire U.S. Automotive database. The higher performance display allows you to have a virtually “real time” display since the display is up-dated 5 times/sec. The newer display also offers higher

resolution for terrain display. All the other features of the 396 are also incorporated.

The 496 is impressive, however, 396 owners shouldn’t feel left behind. If you’ve purchased the Automotive Accessory Kit for the 396, you’re better than halfway there.

So, it all boils down to the amount of data you want and the frequency with which you want your data updated. If you decide that the 496 is the way to go, give Eastern a call. We buy 396’s and just coincidently sell 496’s.

Sorting Out the

Acronyms

Aviation is full of acronyms. REIL, NOTAM, ARINC, etc. Likewise avion-

ics manufacturers have developed a full suite of acronyms in their marketing efforts: MRP, MAP, MSP. All of these

acronyms have to do with pricing, so they should be of special interest to avi-onics buyers. I’ll try to help you sort them out to make your avionics shop-

ping easier.

Gone are the days when an avionics shop could simply pur-

chase Kamikaze Avionics’ Whiz-bang 101 and sell it for whatever the market would bear. Today, manufacturers set the prices at which avionics shops must sell. If a shop is caught selling for less than the specified price, conse-

quences can be extreme: manufacturer’s refusal to ship the offender products for 180 days; loss of a dealer’s incentive bonuses; loss of dealership. Manufacturer’s are also quite

specific as to what constitutes a “discount”. For example, a couple of well-known manufacturers consider free shipping a discount!

But what do MSP, MAP, and MRP mean?

MSP—Minimum Suggested Price. It’s almost an oxymo-ron since there is nothing “suggested” about the price.

MAP—Minimum Advertised Price. In this case, some manufacturers insist on a minimum advertised price, but

don’t care what the shop actually sells the product for.

MRP—Minimum Resale Price. The absolute lowest price a shop can sell a product for.

The bottom line is that if you see MSP, MAP, or MRP in a dealer’s ads, it’s your clue that the price is the price is the price. So, please don’t tempt a shop into jeopardizing it’s

dealership by asking for a discount they can’t give.

Ever Check Your Serial Numbers?

Why would you ever want to check your

avionics serial numbers? You might be surprised to find that your radios aren’t your radios!

A favorite trick of avionics thieves is to steal the avionics from one aircraft and

put them in a second, identically equipped aircraft, fencing

the second aircraft’s avionics. Since aircraft owners seldom check serial numbers, the second aircraft owner may not know for years that his avionics were stolen and that he’s been flying on stolen avionics.

The morale: Check your avionics serial numbers periodi-cally. A good time to do it is when your plane is in for its

yearly pitot/static and transponder tests.

Ever Heard of Vertex-Standard?

How about Yeasu?

We’ve known them for years as Yeasu—a well-known and trusted name in shortwave, SSB and handheld radios. Now they’re called Vertex-Standard. The good news is that only

the name has changed. The superior quality and value are the still the same. And, Eastern has Vertex-Standard units in stock and at great prices. Take a look for yourself—

Eastern and Interactive Safety—the Best!

OK, you might not want to wear a

helmet while flying your KingAir, but you might want one when you fly your Extra 300 and, without a doubt,

Interactive Safety offers the best hel-met system in it’s Alpha Eagle.

Made of lightweight KevlarTM, the

Eagle is custom-fitted to your head measurements, so the fit is just right (as long as you don’t let your hair

grow long or shave your head). Since the Eagle is a custom helmet system , you specify visors, headsets (even ANR), mics, mic booms, mic jacks and even

colors and emblems.

Best of all, Eastern offers great prices and special discounts for volume, fleet and governmental orders. If you need the

best helmet system we’ve seen, give us a call.
