  • Principal’s Reflections

It was wonderful to meet all our excited 2017 Kindergarten students and their families last Thursday as the children began their first day of “big school”. I had the lovely opportunity to vist all four classes and to see the excitement on their faces. The children were very settled. A wonderful year awaits them.

    Parent Teacher Meetings this Tuesday 7th February Parent teacher meeting are planned for this afternoon / evening and will be held in your child’s classroom. Times are: Yr1 @ 4:30 Yr2 @ 5:00 Yr 3 @ 5:30 Yr 4 @ 6:00 Yr5 @ 6:30 Yr 6 @7:00

Please note, these are general information meetings and not individual meetings. If you require and individual meeting, please arrange a time with your child’s teacher that is mutually convenient. Your child’s teacher is always your “first port of call.”

    Tuesday 7th February

  • Pebblecrete Playground Surface Notice Please be aware that this surface becomes very slippery when wet. “Slippery When Wet” signs are displayed to alert everyone. The children are reminded to stay off this area when wet. Please be aware.

Swimming Carnival Friday 10th February It is important that parents read the note sent home very carefully for those students who are attending. The carnival structure is the same as in 2016. Please note, that all the heats are timed and that the awarding of first, second and third place is based on the time swam across all the heats in that category e.g. 8 Years Boys Freestyle and not the place in individual heats.

Mobile Phones and Devices Protocol for Students A reminder that all children must hand into the office of a morning. They can be collected at the end of the school day from the office.

P&C and School Council Meetings for Term One We have two meeting scheduled for this term. Tuesday 14th February (St. Valentines Day). Tue 14th March. Our School Council commences at 6pm and and P&C commences at 7pm. Both meetings are held in the library.

T1 Values 2017 Our values for this term follow the themes of: Kindness (weeks 1 to 5).

  • Respect (weeks 6 to 11).

School Attendance I have attached to this newsletter the current School Attendance Register Codes and Definitions for all schools, including our school, for those interested. Attendance at school from Monday to Friday is compulsory for all students. Attendance is compulsory between the hours of 9am till 2:55pm at WSPS for all students. Because of this, there may be times a recording of explained but unjustified is marked against a student, as the Department is strict about children attending school between and staying at school between the hours of 9am till 2:55 pm at WSPS. Please be aware. The hyperlink to the policy is below: https://education.nsw.gov.au/policy-library/policies/school-attendance-policy Working With Children’s Check (WWCC) Mandatory Requirement for all Volunteers at WSPS in 2017 Thank you to all those parents who have already completed and submitted a WWCC for 2017 When completed please forward a copy (with your date of birth) to the P&C secretary and the school. A WWCC needs a date of birth to cross-reference its validity. As of the commencement of the 2017 school year, it is a requirement for all volunteers to have a WWCC when at our school. This is best practice. The good news is that a WWCC for volunteers is free! I have added two hyperlinks to make this process as easy and painless as possible. You can apply online. You will be required to show your WWCC at the office where a copy will be kept on record. All Department of Education teachers and staff will be required to have a paid WWCC in 2017. Let’s keep them all safe!

Pick Up and Go Reminder Please note that this is a NSW Transport Authority approved initiative for our school which operates each afternoon (Monday to Friday) off Smith Road.

  • As a result, parents have to register with the school and clearly display a sign on the dashboard of the car … (sign is supplied by the school). We have been given a specific allocation of cars per afternoon which we are not permitted to exceed, hence a waiting list has been established. Please be aware! Hyperlink: http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/stayingsafe/schools/dropoff_pickup.html Advantages of the Drop off Pick Up student marshalling initiative The ‘Drop off and Pick Up’ student marshalling initiative has a number of safety advantages for school students which include:

Relieving traffic congestion around the school by ensuring cars don’t park for long periods of time in the No Parking zone.

Providing adult supervision for students being dropped of and picked up from the school.

Managing the various transport options available in the school environment.

Well done to several WSPS students who competed at the Peter Wilson Memorial Cup, the Hunter

Region’s Junior Touch Football Tournament at Nelson Bay on the weekend. Ayla Stevens, Bella Wilson,

Harry Leo, Kayla Stokes, Eliza Mahoney & Sunny Mitchell endured the heat to represent Wallsend. Special

congratulations to Kayla, Eliza & Sunny, members of the Under 12s Team, which won their division to

  • become the Hunter Champions. We wish them all well when they compete at NSW State Cup in Port

    Macquarie later this month.

    LIBRARY NEWS

    Borrowing commences this week!

Please remember that all students need a library bag for borrowing. They help protect the books on the journey to

and from school and also provide a place for students to leave the library book(s) while at home so they avoid getting

lost or mixed up with your home collection.

“Reading literally creates new neurons in a child's brain and new connections between those neurons. If you want an

intelligent child, give them books. If you want a more intelligent child, give them more books.” Jackie French, Senior

    Australian of the Year 2015

    Thank you,

New Kinder Reading Resources – Helpers Needed

  • $$$ School Banking News $$$

Our school banking day is Thursday and will commence in Week 4 on

    Thursday 16/2/17.

For those of you in Kindergarten you just need to bring in your deposit book with your money and we will

issue you with a Student Number. If you haven’t already gone to the bank to collect your deposit book now

is a good time to do so.

    Rewards Program

To help reward individual savings efforts, every time a student makes a deposit into their Youthsaver

account through School Banking, they’ll receive a silver Dollarmites token.

Once they’ve collected 10 tokens, they can redeem them for one of our exciting reward items. Two items

are made available each term. Students also receive a certificate when they reach certain savings

    milestones.

    2017 Reward Items

As part of our Future Savers theme, the following rewards are a great way to keep children motivated and

demonstrate the value of saving. The rewards are released throughout the year.

    • Cyber Handball – Term 1 • Colour Change Markers – Term 1 • 3D Chalk Set – Term 2 • Tablet Case – Term 2 • Smiley Emoji Keyring – Term 3 • Volt Handball – Term 3 • Pencil + Tech Case – Term 4 • Epic Earphones – Term 4 To redeem a reward, students must cut out the corresponding coupon from the Rewards Card and hand it

Spannenberg, Leah Walker & Leanne Outram

  • Calling for volunteers – we need your help!

Our students really enjoy participating in the Commonwealth Bank School

Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help.

The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to assist in

the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes a

small amount of your time one day. Your help with the program will greatly

benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school

    with fundraising.

Currently, School Banking day is Friday and you would need to be available

    from 9:00 am – 10:30 am.

If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, please fill in the section below and return it to the

    Office.

Yes, I would like to help with School Banking!

  • Wallsend Touch Association On Thursday 9 Feb at 5:30pm, Wallsend

Touch Association will be hosting a free touch football clinic that is being run by the Touch

Football Australia Indigenous and All Stars Teams.

They are also playing the first of the 3 matches at our fields on the same night at 7:30pm. We would love to see as many Juniors there who would like to try the game of touch plus learn some new skills with the Australian players. They can then hang around and watch a great game of touch! It would be greatly appreciated if you can pass this onto your students and families. Thanks so much
