Warner School faculty, staff, and students participated in the 2018 Excellus BCBSTeachers Challenge at Durand Eastman Beach Park on Sunday, June 10. Proceeds fromthis annual 5K run/walk support the purchase of classroom and school supplies forstudents and teachers across the Rochester City School District.

UR Student Demo Days for June – Please Join UsUR Student is presenting a student registration demonstration using UR Student onJune 19 and 20. Three identical presentations are listed below with remotemeeting options for each. Register for one today!

Eastman School of Music: June 19 from 10-11 a.m.Medical Center: June 19 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. River Campus: June 20 from 1-2 p.m. Agenda: A demonstration on the registration process within UR Student – registering to a course directly, or from a plan. A short demonstration of aregistration report will be included with a Q&A session at the end. All are welcomewith specific content directed toward registrars, staff, faculty and others whoadvise.

These monthly events will inform all impacted employees of the upcoming processand system changes due to the implementation of a new student informationsystem. The project team will provide a live demonstration of UR Student with timeset aside for Q&A.

CUES Hosts the All In: When Theory Meets Practice in Education ReformSymposiumOn April 28, over 250 teachers, administrators, and community members gatheredat East Upper and Lower Schools to learn about and discuss some of thetransformational education reform work of the UR-East Educational PartnershipOrganization (EPO). Attendees chose among 34 presentations led by East staffwho shared their theory-driven practices on EPO initiatives, including curriculumand instruction, Family Group model, support model, university-school partnerships,distributed leadership, family and community partnerships, and restorativepractices. Subject area teachers presented their work on literacy, writers’workshop, historical thinking, Universal Backward Design in a performanceensemble, and math inquiry. Attendees included a wide range of educators andcommunity members, representing: 13 school districts in Monroe County andbeyond; 15 Rochester area foundations, agencies & community-wide initiatives;parents and grandparents, retirees, and tutors; University of Rochester alumni,

The dayended with words of support from New York State Assembly Majority LeaderJoseph Morelle, words of inspiration from Syracuse University Professor, MarcelleHaddix, who was introduced by East scholar, Dennis Olmedo in both English andSpanish, and concluding remarks from Shaun Nelms, associate professor andsuperintendent of UR-East EPO.

Three Warner Graduates Receive City School District’s Award for First-YearExcellenceEmma Brinkman '16W (MS), Corinne Calabretta '17W (MS), and Angela Rodriguez '18W(MS) were named 2017-18 Career in Teaching (CIT) Interns of the Year for the RochesterCity School District (RCSD). They were presented the award at a ceremony in May inrecognition of their exemplary performance as first-year teachers. The CIT internprogram, a collaborative effort between the Rochester Teachers Association and theRCSD, pairs first-year teachers with mentors, who provide professional support. Readmore.

Lane, Zhang Recognized at Statistics ConferenceDoctoral students Jamil Lane and Xupin Zhang were recognized at the 7th AnnualConference of the Upstate Chapters of the American Statistical Association in Rochesterin April. The conference theme was “Better Living Through Statistics.” Lane wasoffered the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Summer Research Fellowship and will bespending 8 weeks at an NIH lab doing federally-funded research on stress and healthamong adolescents. Zhang received a second place award in the Data Competitionfor her paper “Crime Pattern Inference of Rochester, NY with Big Data.”

Kirschenbaum Gives Workshop in ChinaHoward Kirschenbaum, professor emeritus, gave a workshop on Carl Rogers and thePerson-Centered Approach to counseling and psychotherapy at Beijing NormalUniversity in China in April.

Hazen Joins International University Housing Task ForceLogan Hazen, professor, was selected as to be one of eight members of a task force forthe Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I) viaan international application process. Lynch Gives Talk in Kazan, RussiaMartin Lynch, associate professor, delivered the talk "Factors of Self-DeterminationAmong Doctoral Students in the Educational Space of the University" at the IVInternational Forum on Teacher Education, hosted at Kazan Federal University in Kazan,Russia in May.

Warner Students Inducted into Counseling Honor SocietyEighteen counseling students were inducted into Upsilon Rho Iota, the local chapter ofChi Sigma Iota, the international honor society in counseling, at a ceremony in May.Students are invited to membership based on academic excellence, professionalintegrity, leadership potential, commitment to clinical service, and advocacy within thecounseling field. The guest speaker was Alisa Hathaway '12W (EdD), LCSW-R. Hathawayis a senior supervising therapist and director of Project Peace (Promoting EmotionalAdjustment in Children Experiencing Challenge) at Mt. Hope Family Center. Theinduction was followed by the appointment of chapter officers for the 2018-19academic year and a reception for family and friends.

Counseling Department Holds Annual SymposiumThe counseling department held its annual symposium in May. The event celebratedgraduates’ academic and professional achievements, and included a display of postersrepresenting capstone projects and a public expression of thanks to partnership sitesand supervisors. Site supervisors were recognized as Supervision Fellows and DedicatedFellows for their continuous dedication to the training of new counselors andcommitment to excellence in the provision of clinical supervision. Master’s Thesis Awardswere also presented to individuals in recognition of their outstanding academic effortsand achievements. Recipients of the Master's Thesis Awards were:Dalayna Gardner ‘18W (MS), Megan Gillson ‘18W (MS), Jennifer Parr ‘18W (MS),Aliyah Patterson ‘18W (MS), Kristin Rabb ‘18W (MS), and Michael Ripple ‘18W (MS).
