Dear Friends: Seems like I've lived my entire life in the church; like Pastor Bill, I was born and raised in a minister's home. Both of my weddings took place in congregations I was serving at the time (as did the precious memorial service honoring the too-short life of Jennifer, my first spouse). And ever since a church in southern Minnesota took a chance on me as their youth worker in 1970, until retiring in 2013, my paycheck has come from something other than a church for maybe six months altogether. I served eleven congregations in some capacity, and lost count of how many churches endured my occasional preaching. So I've seen all kinds of churches, and I consider Emanuel Church one of the most satisfying of all. Time and time again, weve stood with one another in times of hardship, and celebrate one another's joys. We've welcomed new ways of thinking, worshipping, serving; were a wonderful stew of attitudes, convictions, passions, and ideas. Led by an exceptional pastor and downright wonderful lay leaders, were bold enough to try something new. One of our best qualities is this: unlike a lot of churches that aren't sure of the future, we're amazingly confident. There are people (and churches) who tell us to be cautious. They have a point; it's a difficult world out there, and there aren't as many of us in the pews as there were twenty years ago. Play it safe, they say; the best we can hope for is to slow the decline. But may we never be guilty of excessive prudence. We can't stand still; God won't let us. God has blessed us because we dared to follow our dreams, confident that God's would provide all that we need. As people who follow One who emptied Himself until only His love was left, may we not leave this earth with love left over, unspent. Pastor Dale Stohre EMANUEL ECHO AUGUST 2019

Dear Friends:

Seems like I've lived my entire life in the church; like Pastor Bill, I was born and raised in a minister's home.

Both of my weddings took place in congregations I was serving at the time (as did the precious memorial

service honoring the too-short life of Jennifer, my first spouse). And ever since a church in southern

Minnesota took a chance on me as their youth worker in 1970, until retiring in 2013, my paycheck has

come from something other than a church for maybe six months altogether. I served eleven congregations

in some capacity, and lost count of how many churches endured my occasional preaching. So I've seen

all kinds of churches, and I consider Emanuel Church one of the most satisfying of all.

Time and time again, we’ve stood with one another in times of hardship, and celebrate one another's

joys. We've welcomed new ways of thinking, worshipping, serving; we’re a wonderful stew of attitudes,

convictions, passions, and ideas. Led by an exceptional pastor and downright wonderful lay leaders, we’re

bold enough to try something new. One of our best qualities is this: unlike a lot of churches that aren't

sure of the future, we're amazingly confident.

There are people (and churches) who tell us to be cautious. They have a point; it's a difficult world out

there, and there aren't as many of us in the pews as there were twenty years ago. Play it safe, they say;

the best we can hope for is to slow the decline.

But may we never be guilty of excessive prudence. We can't stand still; God won't let us. God has blessed

us because we dared to follow our dreams, confident that God's would provide all that we need. As

people who follow One who emptied Himself until only His love was left, may we not leave this earth with

love left over, unspent.

Dear Emanuel Church Members:

It has been said before…time sure flies when you’re having FUN…PEP ‘is’ fun! A round of applause goes to Ms. Jenele, Ms. Melinda and Ms. Kristin (PEP’s Summer Planning Committee). They planned a super summer for children over 4 years old, which included a variety of educational and fun fieldtrip destinations, on-site and in the community!

Thank you to Pastor Dale Stohre for blessing Park’s Edge Preschool’s children’s bikes, trikes, wheeled toys and buggies too. Our summer wouldn’t be the same without God’s blessings and safety too! Park’s Edge Preschool families, children and staff are looking forward to Emanuel Church’s Vacation Bible School on-site July 22-25. Thank you to Emanuel Church for inviting the PEP families to participate. What a wonderful way to unite children and families with God’s teachings. Children and staff are enjoying a happy, healthy and safe summer at Parks’ Edge Preschool and want it to continue. Why does summer have to end?

Have you noticed the many building improvements made between Memorial Day and the Fourth of July? Yes, several new additions have been added to improve the quality of the preschool classroom environment on the lower level: new flooring, new lighting, new doors, fresh paint and window blinds. PEP’s office area had a facelift too. New woodchips and sand rounded out PEP’s outdoor environment. An enriched environment, indoors and out, is the foundation for the quality of care and learning in a loving child-care setting. Park’s Edge’s program is 5-star quality rated and NAC Accredited since 2010!

Speaking of foundation…and new roof…’thank you’ to the Emanuel Church members and the many vendors that have contributed to the quality and the success of the improvements made to Emanuel Church and Park’s Edge Preschool’s classroom learning environment! Thank you to the Zacher Families for repaving and marking the driveway and parking lot in making it safe for all families to drive through.

Thank you to Ms. Jenele who helped to support our mission by serving at the UCC’s General Synod in Milwaukee. Jenele and I served on the UCC’s General Synod’s Child Care Program Planning Committee along with Reverend Deb Payden and Reverend Mary Gafner. Jenele served during the entire General Synod. I had the privilege to serve over the weekend. I made many new friends from all over the country and the world. Thank you, Milwaukee, for the wonderful opportunity for Emanuel Church and Park’s Edge Preschool to ‘SHINE’ (2019 theme) at the UCC General Synod!

Let’s August is a very special time of year when we welcome or say good-bye to our PEP families by celebrating summer with AugustFest, Sunday, August 4th. Park’s Edge Preschool is sponsoring 2 bounce houses. One is ‘Toy Story’ themed and the other is ‘Sponge Bob’ themed offering an obstacle course. We look forward to the Car Show, delicious ‘fair’ food, raffle baskets and games too! It’s an afternoon for Emanuel Church and PEP families to join the entire community in celebrating summer together. Park’s Edge Preschool celebrated a twenty-year anniversary on June 1, 2019. Purchase a can of beer and you will receive a free PEP koozie, sporting PEP’s new logo ‘serving the community since 1999’!

As promised, here’s a reflection on PEP’s twenty-year anniversary from John Zimmerman, a past PEP board member…”Congratulations to everyone at Park’s Edge Preschool for their dedication to the care and education they are providing. I was on the board when Emanuel bought Park’s Edge from the previous owner. Not only did I serve on the board, but I became very active driving the van, and doing ‘fix it’. Soon I became lovingly known as ‘Mr. John’. Park’s Edge has become a very close extension of Emanuel and I am proud to say I’ve had a part in it.”

Look for Park’s Edge Preschool at Hales Corners National Night Out on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 from 5-9pm. Emanuel Church’s Good News Group will be there too. It is a great way to see ‘what’s happening’ in Hales Corners and the surrounding community at Hales Corners Village Park.

With all the ‘busy’ness at P.E.P. we cannot forget our mission to care for and teach the children about God and his teachings ‘to love one another.’ We are blessed to have so many opportunities to role model ‘His’ message.

Sincerely,

Ellen M. Kvalheim,

Park’s Edge Preschool’s Director

SUMMER CHOIR

Ever thought about singing in the choir but can’t make a full time commitment? Or think the music might be too hard? Enter the summer choir! The summer choir will sing the first Sunday of June, July, August, and September and is open to whomever wants to sing that morning whether you are a current choir member or not! And best of all, the music will be easy! Just meet at the piano in front of the church at 9am for a brief rehearsal the morning we sing! All ages are welcome! Questions? Please talk to Mark.

SENIOR CHOIR

Senior Choir rehearsals resume on Wednesday evening, September 4 at 7:00pm. There will also be rehearsals on Wednesdays, September l1, 18, and 25 at 7:00pm. The choir sings on Sundays, September 8, 15, 22, and 29 at 9:30am, with rehearsals at 8:45am. We always welcome more voices and men’s voices are especially needed! Although it is helpful to read music, there are no tryouts, just come and sing! Interested? Please talk to/see/e-mail Mark with any questions or concerns you may have!

YOUTH CHOIR

Youth Choir will resume rehearsals on Sunday, September 8 at 10:45am (after worship/church school). They will also practice on Sunday, September 22 at 10:45am. The first Sunday they sing is October 13 at 9:30 am, with rehearsal at 9:00am. We could always use more voices, so join the Youth Choir and join the fun! Interested? Please talk to/see/e-mail Mark with any questions or concerns you may have!

Thank you to John Zacher, Sean Zacher and

Reno Berg for all of their hard work removing the

trees and trimming around the church property.

This is such an improvement and easier to maintain.

Thank you to Bob & Betsy Heinzel for purchasing

new chair racks, table rack and heavy duty shelving for

Kurth Hall. This will make events and fellowship much

easier. Another BIG thank you to Betsy Heinzel and

Peggy Berg who cleaned out the closet the chairs and

tables are stored in. This created a much more

organized space that makes things easier to find.

Thank you to Park’s Edge Preschool staff, parents, and

Children for their patience during Emanuel’s extensive

construction work inside and around the building.

❖ Congratulations to Michael and

Jenny Minikowski on their June wedding

here at Emanuel Church. In June.

❖ Be sure to take a look at the new

front office for Park’s Edge Preschool as

well as the new flooring that continues

through to the church offices.

❖ Pastor Bill will be away on Sabbatical

until September 9. Please feel free to

contact the church office with any

questions or concerns.

Looking ahead – Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 19, and start saving your

pennies to buy your ticket to “Niceties” at the Milwaukee Rep – it will be a great

night out with your Social Justice Gathering Group and Special Events Group, co-

sponsors of this event. Tickets will go on sale in September for $32 per person (a

25% discount over individual tickets). More information about the show is on the Social Justice bulletin

board in the narthex. We’d love to have you and your friends join us for this thought provoking evening.

Speaking of the bulletin board, please check it often. Members of our group post information about

events sponsored by other organizations that are open to all who are committed to learning more about

the day to day discrimination encountered by many in our society and what more we can do to be the

hands and feet of Jesus in our community. There have been opportunities surrounding separation of

immigrant families and we suspect there will be more in the future – if you are aware of any you need not

be an “official” member of our group to add information to the clipboard on the bulletin board. We want

this spot to be a place to share opportunities for learning and action on all issues related to social justice.
