Summary
1
Revised nonfarm job estimates for April remained at 1,417,800. Revised private sector job estimates
remained at 1,160,200. Estimates are seasonally adjusted.
Kansas gained 1,900 jobs over the month (a monthly average of 1,800 over the last 3 months). Over the
past 12 months, the number of nonfarm jobs increased by a total of 22,700 jobs. Estimates are seasonally
adjusted.
The private sector gained 1,800 jobs over the month, or 0.2%. The largest gains were in Manufacturing
(+1,300); Trade, Transportation and Utilities (+800); and Construction (+500). Over the past 12 months,
the private sector gained 20,700 jobs. Estimates are seasonally adjusted.
Average weekly hours worked in the private sector increased over the year from 33.7 hours to 34.0 hours in
May 2018. Average nominal hourly earnings increased by $0.71 to $23.76 (+3.1%). Average nominal weekly
earnings increased by $31.05 (+4.0%) over the past 12 months. Estimates are not seasonally adjusted.
In May the labor force increased by 852, the pool of unemployed decreased by 23 and employment
increased by 875. Estimates are seasonally adjusted.
The unemployment rate remained at 3.4% in May. Estimates are seasonally adjusted.
Over the past 12 months, initial claims decreased by 4,179 and continued claims decreased by 16,593 (these
numbers include all programs). The number of individuals receiving unemployment insurance benefits
decreased by 3,137 over the year. Average duration of benefit receipt decreased by 0.2 weeks over the past
12 months. Estimates are not seasonally adjusted.

Private sector jobs, average weekly hours worked, and real hourly earnings all increased compared to last May. This is the third consecutive month that all three measures of demand for labor have been positive.

• The pool of the unemployed decreased by a net of 23 individuals to 49,990 over the month. Estimates
are seasonally adjusted.
• The unemployment rate remained at 3.4% in May. Estimates are seasonally adjusted. The revised
unemployment rate for April remained at 3.4%.
• Over the last 12 months the unemployment rate decreased from 3.6% in May 2017 to 3.4% in May 2018.
