As the curtain falls down for the academic year 2017-18, Bharata Mata College says adieu to six veteran teachers who have reached the final edge of their professional life. Dr. Aype Thomas P and Mr. Prince J. Josevilla, Dept. of Physics, Dr. Lissy Jacob and Dr. Thomas Joseph, Dept of Mathemacs, Dr. Laly Mathew, Dept. of English and Dr. Kochurani Thomas, Dept. of Economics have always played a key role in elevang Bharata Mata college to greater academic heights. Their scholarly subject knowledge and brilliantly arculate lectures have remarkably enriched the students. As teachers, they never limited their service to the prescribed boundaries of the syllabi. For them, to educate means to draw out the best in each student. Their career which spans around three decades was a relentless struggle to mould their students into promising cizens of the world. Apart from their classes the students imbibed from them qualies of love, sympathy, kindness, forgiveness and many other fascinang lessons of life. These six teachers with their profound dedicaon towards their profession and love towards students, have become guardian angels of their students. Along with their sincerity as good teachers, they have always been truly devoted to Bharata Mata College. Each of their ventures has been to propel the college according to the changing academic currents. With profound dynamism they enthusiascally coordinated various curricular and co-curricular acvies of the college. From the IQAC Co-ordinator’s Desk

In the academic year 2017-18 Bharata Mata College was a platform of myriad activities primarily centered on holistic development of the students. Apart from the classroom studies, the college took initiative to inculcate in the students social and cultural values and to develop their co-curricular skills. A major achievement of the college is the placement activities and the job training programme which helped the

students to secure jobs in multinational companies. Aegis, Only Group, Axis Bank, Apollo Munich and Sutherland Global conducted recruitment drive in the college. Uber conducted online screening and Accenture conducted telephonic screening of the students. Around twenty students were placed in the companies that visited our college. Our students were also placed in various companies in the recruitment drives held at other educational institutions. The students also proved their artistry and sportsman spirit through their meritorious achievements in various cultural and sports fests. As the academic year concludes, the college shines with a sense of accomplishment and success. The Bharata Mata family also bids farewell to six of its dear teachers who retire from the service. The college showers on them respect and love for their unadulterated commitment and loyalty towards their career and college. Their persistent endeavours have always strengthened the foundation of the college. The vibes of this triumphant academic year gear up the college for another new academic year.

The Management of Bharata Mata College, conducted an Academic Retreat for the teaching staff at Christ deemed to be University, from 22nd to 24th May, 2018. It is the first time in the history of Bharata Mata College the Management conducted a retreat outside its familiar premises. The schedule of the 3 day retreat comprised of :1. Departmental Visits and Interaction The classes aided the teachers to enhance and refine their teaching methods by blending both the conventional and contemporary techniques.

Bharata Mata College, Thrikkakara organized two day All Kerala Academic Science Fest ENSEMBLE ’18 in connection with National Science Day celebrations on 27th and 28th February 2018. The programme was supported by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment and DST, Govt. of India. It offered a plethora of activities to ignite the spirit of Science in students and public. It offered a platform for the participants to continuously exchange, encounter and imbibe innovative ideas and contribute their knowledge for the betterment of our society. Fr. Jacob G Palakkappilly unveiled Nobel Prize Tree to mark the beginning of the fest. Academic Science Fest was inaugurated by Former ISRO Deputy Director Dr.K.N. Nainan. He delivered a special lecture on the ‘Historical Development of India in the Field of Space Science’. The women entrepreneur Dr. Merina Benny Antony, General Manager, Arjuna Natural Extract Ltd. was honoured on the occasion. The first day comprised of ENIGMA (finding a scientific problem), EUREKA (innovative idea for a given scientific problem), SCINNOVATION (project

ENSEMBLE ’18presentation for graduates and post graduates) and SPARK (Poster Presentation for research scholars). The second day began with a National Science Day lecture by Dr. Reji Varghese, Associate Professor, IISER, Thiruvananthapuram. CONCOCTION (Science Fiction Story Telling Competition for High School Students), TECHCRAFT (Working model for Higher Secondary Students), SPECTRA (Short Film Competition) and PERLOCUTION (Science Quiz) were conducted on this day. Dr.Renjith K. R., Scientist at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Science and Technology was the Quiz Master.

CAMPUS MINISTRY AND JESUS YOUTH

AICUFAs the academic year moves towards closure, the second year students of the AICUF unit of the college organized a farewell to the final year students. The outgoing students shared their experiences which motivated the junior students to get rejuvenated for the activities of the next academic year with more enthusiasm.

BMC SO CUT members visited House of Providence at Vilangankunnu and distributed cloths to the inmates and spent an hour with them

WOMEN’S CELLAs a part of Women’s Day, the Women’s Cell of the college conducted an awareness class on health and wellness of women. Dr. Parvaty Sabu and team of Swasthya Wellness Clinic delivered talks on yoga and health problems, especially related to gynaecology. The session also comprised of consultation and health check up using medical equipments. Students had a fruitful time with the psychologists who dealt with their various problems.

• The college community commemorated Mar Joseph Cardinal Parecattil , our founder patron, on February 20th. The manager Rev. Fr. Jacob G. Palackappilly, the principal Dr. Aype Thomas, the staff and the students gathered in the library hall, cherishing his memories and honouring him by ‘pushpaarchana’.

• The department of Economics won the first prize in collecting old newspapers for charity. The college manager handed over a gift to the HoD and the student representatives of the department.

• Jesus Youth organised a special prayer meeting on 28 February, 2018 as a farewell to Dr. Kochurani Thomas, the head of the department of Economics and the senior students.

The NCC unit of Bharata Mata College felicitated Cdt Ananthuprasad M, who attended the Republic Day Camp in New Delhi in January 2018. The function was inaugurated by Col GopiKumar, Commanding Officer, 21 Kerala Battalion NCC Ernakulam. The principal Dr AypeThomas , Lt Nithin Thomas congratulated the cadet for his achievement.The formal dress code of the cadets was a highlight of the event.

The Closing ceremony and rank distribution ceremony were held in the Students Hall. Principal Dr Aype Thomas and Former NCC Officer Prof Prince J Rosevilla were the chief guests. The report of the academic year 2017-2018 was presented by SUO Aparna Lalu.

BeFORE and MSWMILAGRO 2K18: Students Talent Quest & Fund Raising Campaign

MILAGRO 2K18, a fund raising programme for the Kuttampuzha Tribal Project of Bharata Mata Extension for Organic Research was held on 17th February 2018. The event held in the campus of Bharata Mata College comprised of a variety of theme based competitions for school students. 122 students from various schools in

Ernakulam district participated for the competitions. The programme sponsored by JOSCO Jewellers, UAE Exchange and Geojit was coordinated by Asst. Prof. Honey Mary John, Dept. of MSW. Cine artist Mr. Gokulan (Jimbruttan) was the chief guest for the valedictory function. The event stood unique as it was a cultural programme with an altruistic base.

International Women’sDay

The Bharata Mata School of Social Workin collaboration with the Kudumbashree, Ernakulum–Snehitha: Gender Help Desk project, organised a Self Defence Workshop for BMC Students, as apart of International Women’s Day, 2018. District Jail Respresentatives Ms Bashira and Ms. Jayashree lead the workshop. The students were taught a few self defence techniques to be applied during dangers. The Sub Inspector of Police Mr. Ravi delivered a speech on the necessity of Self Defence workshop for women in Kerala.

World Social Work Day

BMSS in collaboration with the Kerala Association of Professional Social Work (KAPS) and Rotary Smart Cochin organised Public Pond Cleaning in NGO Quarters area. The MSW students actively participated in the programme with the support of BeFORE and the Ward councillor Mr. Ashraf (Ward Number 32).

Ms. RenyRajanjoined the depart-ment of Social Work as Assistant Professor on 1st February 2018. Her area of specialisation is Medi-cal and Psychiatric Social Work.

“BeFORE Vijayeebhava”

Bringing forward the marginalised section of society is a duty of every responsible citizen. As a part of it BeFORE identified Rajeev Nagar Colony to extend our services. Based on a study conducted by the students of Bharata Mata College among the women in Rajeev Nagar colony, we could realize that providing an entrepreneurial activity to the women will enhance the overall perfomance of the family. BeFORE proposed a project to K Chittilapilly foundation which focuses on the empowerment of women and was sanctioned. The overall objective of the project is empowering women through entrepreneurship to strengthen the family and establish gender equality. The inauguration of the project was held on 3rd February 2018 at Bharata Mata College. The function was chaired by the Manager, Rev. Fr. Jacob G. Palackappilly. Mr. Bently Thadikaran ,Project Manager of Kochaouseph Chittilappilly foundation addressed the gathering. He spoke about Kochaouseph Chittilapilly foundation and the motive of Vijayeebhava project. The seed money was distributed to the beneficiaries in the function.

Orupidi campaign

BeFORE organized the campaign “oru pidi ari Madhuvinu”, as a penance to the soul of Madhu, the tribal man who was beaten up and murdered by a literate mob for stealing eatables. The staff and students of Bharata Mata College participated in the

campaign. The rice brought by the students were collected and given to a near-by old-age home.The students also formed a human-chain in the Seaport-airport road in order to express the protest against this brutal incident.

Inauguration of Club B4 on 15th March 2018

BeFORE started its student’s wing “Club B4” at BMC campus. Through Club B4 we take the opportunity for upgrading social commitment of the students group towards the society. 90 student volunteers are now in Club B4 with an objective to contribute something good for the betterment of the society. The Manager Rev. Fr. Jacob G. Palackappilly inaugurated Club B4 on 15th March 2018. Mr.Joshy Varghese, former mentor -State Suchitwa Mission delivered the keynote address.

Visit to IIM Calicut

The II year B.Com students visited IIM Calicut on 9 March, 2018. The students interacted with the faculty and visited the Museum of Commerce and Library. An industrial visit to Matrubhumi Publishers at Calicut was also held.

The Valedictory Function of Commerce Association

The valedictory function of “Aurora,” the Commerce Association was held on 6 March, 2018. The president of the association N. Aravinda welcomed the gathering. The Principal Dr. Aype Thomas inaugurated the function and delivered the inaugural address. Dr. Sr. Tessy Thomas, the HOD, and Nibu Varghese, representative of final year B.Com offered felicitations. The annual report of the association was presented by the association secretary Abhikamy. Isabel Mary of I B.Com proposed the vote of thanks. I B.Com won the overall trophy for the various competitions held.

Dr.Seena Memorial National Paper Presentation Competition

The department conducted a national level paper presentation competition 21 February, 2018, in commemoration of Late Dr. Seena Augustine, former Assistant Professor, Post Graduate Department of Commerce and Research Centre. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. J. Letha, Vice-Chancellor, Cochin University of Science and Technology. The competition provided a platform for young researchers to present their ideas and views on the focal theme “Recent Trends in Commerce”. Fifty students from various colleges in Kerala participated in the event. S.B College Changanassery bagged the first place winning Dr. Seena Memorial ever rolling trophy and Rs.5000 cash prize. Govt. College Manimalakkunnu and St.Teresa’s College Ernakulam won II and III places respectively. The students who cleared UGC Net 2017 were honoured on the occasion.

Outreach Programmes

• The second semester M.Com students visited Anandabhavan, the old age home at Kurichilakkod on March 27, 2018. They spent a day with the inmates, entertaining them with cultural programmes and games. Prof. Anton Joseph and Dr. Sr. Tessy Thomas accompanied them.

• I B.Com students visited Smile Village, an orphan-age at Vettilappara on 21 March, 2018. They were accompanied by Prof Ajay Joseph and Prof Anika Talia Lopez

Farewell to Laly Miss

The department bid adieu to Dr. Laly Mathew, the HOD, who is officially retiring from the college. As a token of love and gratitude for her, a fabulous farewell function was organized on 19 February, 2018. The event was colourfully fabricated by a formal meeting and various cultural programmes of the students. The programme was attended by the family of Dr. Laly Mathew and the teachers and the non-teaching staff of the college and the retired teachers of the department.

Read and Recuperate

As a part of the outreach programme of the department ‘Read and Recuperate’, the students visited the Primary Health Centre, NGO Quarters on 28 March, 2018. Book racks and books were donated with an aim of healing and comfort through reading. The interaction of the students with the staff of the Adieu to Dr. Laly Mathew

International Seminar

Two-day international seminar on “Words, Visuals and Beyond: Mediatization of Narrative Spaces”, was held in collaboration with Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam on 22 & 23 February, 2018. The academic event was inaugurated by the manager, Rev. Fr. Jacob G. Palackappilly. The plenary sessions of the seminar led by Prof. Stig Hjarvard, University of Copenhagen, Dr. Pramod K. Nayar, Professor and Head of the Department of English, University of Hyderabad and Dr. C.S. Jayaram, Amrita School of Arts and Sciences, Kochi, reached out to the layers of knowledge surrounding the seminar theme. The papers presented were highly thought provoking and thus made the event more enriching. The seminar was attended by academicians, teachers, researcher scholars and students from all over the country.

The department organized a grand retirement party to Dr. Lissy Jacob & Dr. Thomas Joseph on 8 March, 2018 to mark the culmination of their official service in the college. Department of Zoology and ENCON Club

In connection with Oil and Gas Conservation Mass Awareness Campaign 2018, the ENCON Club con-ducted inter-departmental Painting and Essay writing competitions on 12 February, 2018 and an inter-de-partmental Quiz Competition on 15 February, 2018. Cash Prizes and certificates for the winners were sponsored by BPCL Kochi Refinery. Students of de-partments of Botany, Commerce (Regular) and Phys-ics won I, II and III prizes respectively in the Quiz com-petition.

The Dept of Physics conducted the science fest, ‘Cu-rio Physics’ on 27 & 28 Feb in connection with Sci-ence Day celebrations. As a part of it the department organized inter-collegiate poster competition and power-point competitions. The event also hosted an exhibition of the students’ projects.

World Sparrow Day

In connection with World Sparrow day 2018 (March 20) a poster exhibition was held to spread awareness on the importance of house sparrows and also Bird bath was installed on the terrace of the college as a provision for birds to cool themselves in the extreme summer months

the official conclusion of the activities. Certificates and prizes of various competitions were distributed to the winners. As a token of encouragement and appreciation and to instill good values in students, some gifts were presented to students on this occasion in various categories such as Best Behaviour, Best Personality, Best Class Keeping and Best coordinator

• International immersion programme for the final year students was held on 10th February 2018. 34 students visited Thailand.

• A training session on SPSS was held on 3rd March 2018 to the second year students. The session was led by Dr. Sreejesh.

• Three day Out bound training programme was conducted for the first year students at Adimali Pastoral centre on 9th &11th March.

• Rotaract club was formed at BMC under the

initiative of Rotary Club of Cochin smart city.

Second InningsThe department of economics organized a loving farewell party to the HOD Dr.Kochurani Thomas, ‘Second Innings’, as a part of her retirement. The programme included talks by eminent Neuro-psychiatrists in the morning session and screening of the movie ‘ASTU: So be it’ in the afternoon. The sessions were intended to spread awareness about different brain disorders and to address the stigma associated with it. It was followed by an open forum involving well-known psychiatrists.
