Our Journey as a Mission

Through fifty-nine years of offering sacramental worship, raising social consciousness, and interpreting God's all-inclusive love, SaintAndrew’s has ministered to the spiritual, social, and economic needs of the Barren County area. The presenceof the Episcopal Church has influenced and enriched thousands of lives in each of those fifty-nine years.

In our history, our ministry, our presence, and our ability to bring growth and change are always clear.Under the sponsorship of Christ Church, Bowling Green, and celebrant the Reverend H. Howard Surface, webegan our worship at Saint Andrew’s on October 20, 1954. We became a mission of the Episcopal Diocese ofKentucky on March 30, 1959. After strong and loving support of our Diocese, we welcomed on June 7, 1970,the Right Reverend C. Gresham Marmion, Bishop, to preside over the groundbreaking ceremony for our presentchurch at 910 Columbia Avenue. In 1980 we retired our mission's indebtedness and dedicated our building. Aneducational addition/parish hall was later added to the structure.

We are ever aware that our ministry must be active and visible in the life of our community as we livetogether and face the challenges of each day. Saint Andrew's has played an integral part in the hosting of theGlasgow Highland Games held annually at Barren River State Resort Park. Our food pantry is an ever-present area safety net. We havebegun to partner with local schools to purchase and distribute hundreds of pairs of shoes to children in need. In 1995 our chapter of Daughtersof the King was established, and it observes a full calendar of mission services. These examples show that we celebrate our community's past andhelp sustain its present, while our new home will enrich its future.

The following ministers have served our church and guided our lives and service: The Rev. Howard Surface (1954-1963); The Rev.Charles Tachau (1963-1967); The Rev. Henry Lancaster (1967-1968); The Rev. Carl Peterson (1968-1980); The Rev. Frank Martin(1981-1986); The Rev. Dan Yelton and The Rev. Bob Zerbe,; The Rev. Eugene Ward (1990-91 and 1997-03); The Rev. Arthur Conaway(1994); The Rev. Daniel Crockett (1994-1996); The Rev. Wayne Blakely (1996-1997); The Rev. Suzanne Barrow (2003- present).

Our mission today

We believe that our mission is a simple one…hospitality. Hospitality that welcomes, includes, teaches, and lives God’s love.We hold true to the words of our Baptismal Covenant, especially as we “respect the dignity of every human being.” Our Episcopalfaith often flies in the face of our Bible-belt community, yet we stretch beyond its boundaries by insuring that our Holy Spirit-filleddoors are wide open. The importance and action of mission is the center of our identity. Our sometimes unconventional hospitalitysustains and identifies us in our community. We are familiar with swimming against the tide.

We hold fast to the premise that the church should involve itself in improving theoverall quality of life in our community and the world at large. An important example is thatin 2003 as the Kentucky tobacco buyout program began, local farmers faced life-changingdilemmas. Many changed their production agriculture to fruit and vegetable crops, and weopened our church grounds, sponsoring the first farmers' market. From a humble beginningin summer 2004 as a small tail-gate event in the church parking lot, the farmers' market hasgrown into a thriving, award-winning community enterprise. It is now a part of SustainableGlasgow, a local movement helping farmers to make a living by producing and locallymarketing wholesome agricultural products. The market recently was named Kentucky’sBest Farmer’s Market 2013 (Mid-size

Division). We believe that improving the quality of life involves thinking, dreaming, and working.

Our cherished goal is a building and surroundings as living illustrations of ourwork in the present and commitment to the future. Saint Andrew's teaches a respectfor nature and the preservation of God's bounty. The creative and future-inspiredchurch design draws upon principals of sustainability, striving to do no harm to theenvironment, achieving ecological balance by reverencing and preserving naturalresources, and drawing the beautiful, natural surroundings inside to become a morefundamental, permanent feature of our sacramental worship. Similarly, there are plansfor a Healing Walk through the pastoral landscape, offering the gifts of Scripture’swisdom, respite, and grace. Inspired by our AA & NA members, our new facility will be a “living” outdoor church where worshiperswalk the walk in silence. God’s love and bounty will be the focus, both inside our doors and out.

Our Hope for the FutureWe desire to expand our unique ministry in this

community, but our present location and facilitieshamper our dreams of fulfilling the full potential ofSaint Andrew's. The existing worship space isinsufficient for growth of the congregation and thisdiscourages its use for special occasions such asbaptisms, funerals, and weddings. Architecturalassessments have concluded that the existing sanctuaryand nave cannot be expanded, and the current land willnot allow for suitable building additions. The existinglocation has been left behind by development in otherparts of the community, reducing the visibility andattractiveness of Saint Andrew's.

As a result of a generous gift facilitated by theDiocese, Saint Andrew's was able to purchase, free ofdebt, an extraordinary 21.44 acre tract of land located onHighway 31-E in a developing part of Northern Glasgow. This pastoral landscape with beautiful vistas was chosen inthe prayerful hope of creating a unique campus for theworship and mission of Saint Andrew's, a place where wemay focus and expand our beacon of grace and inclusiveness.

The location of the building allows for future development of the large area behind the church (area located to the left orwest of proposed building). Possibilities include joining groups from our community to create a commercial kitchen where we can

process the abundant produce of our region. In addition, our community lacks a residential hospice facility, and our new campuswould be uniquely suited because of its size and location to minister to such patients and their families.

In 2012 the firm of DeLeon & Primmer Architectural Workshop of Louisville, Kentucky was engaged to design a campusthat incorporates our vision and needs for ministry. Following a series of envisioning workshops with the congregation, DeLeon &Primmer produced plans for a 150 seating capacity building for Saint Andrew's, including provisions for future expansion. Webelieve these plans incorporate the convictions and hopes for the ministry of this congregation in a unique, affordable, ecologicallysensitive way.

Financing

The Bishop's Committee of Saint Andrew's has appointed a Capital Campaign Committee to oversee the fundraising necessary toconvert our dreams into reality. The Committee is chaired by Bishop's Committee member Carla Whitaker Allen and Treasurer EdwardHatchett. Members include Bishop's Warden Robert Harrison, Bishop's Committee members Jane Baker and Georgine Shank, and VicarSuzanne H. Barrow.

The Capital Campaign Committee's proposed plan and timetable for our construction project is as follows:

! raising $100,000 of advance gifts from congregation members by June 20, 2013

! raising $100,000 of pledges from friends and benefactors by August 1, 2013

! selling the church property at 910 Columbia Avenue, Glasgow, KY and applying the proceeds of its approximate fairmarket value of $100,000 to the construction project

! applying for a capital loan of $100,000 from the Episcopal Diocese of Kentucky's Marmion Fund

! Breaking ground on August 1, 2013
