LEED® is an internationally recognized certification system that measures how well a building performs using several metrics, including: Energy Savings, Water Efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved Indoor Environmental Quality, and stewardship of resources. The rating systems provide a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations, and maintenance solutions.

LEED points are awarded on a 100-point scale per certification type, and credits are weighted to reflect their potential environmental impacts. A project must satisfy specific prerequisites and earn a minimum number of points to be certified.

Certification levels, based on the number of points, are: • Certified • • Silver • • Gold • • Platinum •

What is LEED®? (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)

Following the formation of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1993, the organization’s members quickly realized that the sustainable building industry needed a system to define and measure “green buildings.” USGBC began to research existing green building metrics and rating systems. Less than a year after formation, the members acted on the initial findings by establishing a committee to focus solely on this topic. The composition of the committee was diverse; it included architects, real estate agents, a building owner, a lawyer, an environmentalist, and industry representatives. This cross section of people and professions added a richness and depth both to the process and to the ultimate product.

The first LEED® Pilot Project Program, also referred to as LEED® Version 1.0, was launched at the USGBC Membership Summit in August 1998. After extensive modifications, LEED® Green Building Rating System Version 2.0 was released in March 2000, with LEED® Version 2.1 following in 2002 and LEED® Version 2.2 following in 2005. The LEED® Certification moved to an online system known as V3 with the introduction of the LEED® 2009 Rating Systems.

Defining: GBCI (the Green Building Certification Institute)

MISSION: GBCI’s mission is to be the premier organization independently recognizing excellence in green building performance and practice globally. VISION: Buildings and communities will regenerate and sustain the health and vitality of all life within a generation.

The Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) is a third-party organization that provides independent oversight of professional credentialing and project certification programs related to green building. GBCI is committed to ensuring precision in the design, development, and implementation of measurement processes for green building performance (through project certification) and green building practice (through professional credentials and certificates). Established in 2008 to administer certifications and professional designations within the framework of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® Green Building Rating Systems™, GBCI continues to develop new programs and offer the marketplace validation that building certifications and professional designations have met specific, rigorous criteria.

LEED GA™ (Green Associate) credential is intended for project and facility persons who want to demonstrate their green building expertise in non-technical fields of practice and in more limited areas of expertise. The LEED GA supports green building design, construction and operations, this credential denotes basic knowledge of green building principles, practices and LEED.

LEED AP™ (Accredited Professional) was established originally to provide a standard for professionals participating in the design and construction phases of high-performance, healthful, durable, affordable and environmentally sound commercial, institutional, and high-rise residential buildings

In June of 2009 the LEED AP™ credential system evolved to comply with ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024 thus credential maintenance became mandatory and specialties were established.Prior to this a candidate had the option to test in New Construction, Core and Shell, Commercial Interiors the original LEED AP™ credential is a lifetime designation.

Current AP Credentials include:LEED AP BD+C™ Building Design + Construction The LEED AP O+M™ (Operations and Maintenance) credential provides a standard for professionals participating in the operation and maintenance of existing buildings that implement sustainable practices and reduce the environmental impact of a building over its functional life cycle.

LEED AP ID+C™ Interior Design + Construction LEED AP Homes™ Residential Homes LEED AP ND™ Neighborhood DevelopmentLEED Fellow being developed to honor and recognize distinguished LEED APs who have made a significant contribution to the field of green building and sustainability at a regional, national, or international level.

RECOGNIZE YOUR ROLE IN GREEN BUILDING All building occupants play a role in Green Building!LEED Green Associate Candidates must have experience in the form of EITHER involvement on a project registered for LEED certification OR current or previous employment in a sustainable field of work OR enrollment in or completion of an education program that addresses green building principles. Only one of the these criteria must be met to demonstrate eligibility. A candidate must describe their eligibility in his/her exam application (including details of the project, employment, or education program and the date(s) of the activity**) and document the experience in the form of a letter of attestation from a supervisor, client, project manager, or teacher and must describe your involvement on the job or in the classroom. If audited, the documentation will be reviewed based on these requirements:Candidates must have employment in a sustainable field of work The letter must be on letterhead or provide other evidence of its authenticity. The body of the attestation should be limited to 750 words or less. The letter must be dated. The letter must be authored and signed by a supervisor, client, project manager, teacher, or someone else qualified to evaluate the applicant’s performance. The author’s title and relationship to the applicant should be demonstrated (i.e., through the author’s business card). The letter must summarize and confirm the applicant’s participation in one of the three qualifying experience categories (employment).

***For eligibility based on employment:The letter must explain how the applicant’s profession or company relates to environmentalism or the green building industry. The letter must affirm the applicant’s employment and provide the applicant’s job title and company. The letter must provide the applicant’s date(s) of employment.

*** Participants who complete the DRI GreenPower - EnergyWise Educator program sponsored by USGBC Nevada fulfill this commitment, Daniel Huard has offered to author the required letter of attestation for anyone desiring to pursue their LEED Green Associate Credential.
