Capabilities and limitationsINTRODUCTION

Capabilities and limitationsThis topic discusses current capabilities and limitations of the Avamar for DB2 Client.

Avamar for DB2 Client only supports one database instance per server. Avamar only supports backup of a single instance of DB2 on each

server. Attempting to back up multiple instances on the same server (regardless of version) fails.

Redirected restores must be to the same client. When performing a redirected restore, the restore target directory must be on the same client from which the backup was originally taken. Restores to other clients are not supported.

BACKUP

This chapter describes how to use the Avamar for DB2 Client to back up an entire database.

Database preparationThis topic explains how to prepare the database for offline or online backups.

Offline backups. To perform offline backups of a DB2 database, ensure that the no application is connected to the database when the operation begins and that no clients attempt to connect to the database for the duration of the backup operation.

IMPORTANT: Ensure that no changes to the database are taking place during the backup window. Modifying a database in the middle of a backup can cause unpredictable application behavior, including failed backups.

Online backups. Perform the following steps before you perform the first online backup of a DB2 database:

1. Type the following command on the DB2 server:

db2 update db cfg for DATABASE-NAME using LOGRETAIN ON

where DATABASE-NAME is the name of the database to back up.

2. Perform an offline backup of the DB2 database.

The database is now in a state that supports future online backups.

You must also select the Create an ONLINE backup option for the dataset or as an on-demand backup option.

RESTORE AND RECOVERY

This chapter describes how to use the Avamar for DB2 Client to restore an entire database, and roll the database forward (recover it) to:

• The end of the backup (available only for backups of DB2 9.5 databases and later)

• The end of the logs• A specific point in time

Database preparationTo perform offline restores of a DB2 database, ensure that the database is idle when the operation begins and that no clients attempt to connect to the database for the duration restore operation.

Restore overviewThe procedure that you use to restore a DB2 database from Avamar backups depends on the type of backup used to back up the database:

• Restoring from an offline backup (page 47)• Restoring from an online backup with archive logs (page 50)• Restoring from an online backup without archive logs (page 59)

You can restore the database to its original location or to a different location (also known as "redirected restore").

In each of these scenarios, you must first locate and select the correct backup in the system (page 46), and then perform the correct restore procedure.

APPENDIX A — PLUG-IN OPTIONS

Important terms and conceptsPlug-in options provide additional control of backups and restores. These options are context-sensitive to both the operation being performed and the specific plug-in selected for that operation.

You can specify these options during on-demand backup and restore operations, or persistently set the options in datasets for scheduled backups.

Backup or restore option dialog boxes automatically appear when you initiate on-demand backups or restores, respectively.

When you create a new dataset, the new dataset wizard offers an opportunity to configure persistent backup plug-in option settings for that dataset.

To view or set plug-in options for an existing dataset:

1. In Avamar Administrator, select Tools > Manage Datasets.

The Manage All Datasets window appears.

2. Select a dataset from the list and click Edit.

The Edit Dataset dialog box appears.

3. Click the Options tab.

4. Set the plug-in options either using the graphical controls or by typing option names and values as free text.

Setting plug-in options using graphical controls. Click the Options tab and select a plug-in to display options for the plug-in.

These settings are represented by graphical controls such as options, radio buttons, list boxes, and so forth.

The advantage of using graphical controls to set plug-in options is that you cannot type an option name or value incorrectly. Only valid states are shown.

To set advanced options that are normally only necessary to debug an Avamar system, click Show Advanced Options. The advanced options are shown in red.
