What is the purpose of music videos?

In my opinion I think music videos are made so that artists can give more meaning to their songs. Music videos allow artists to give their audiences a broader understanding into what they’re tying to put across through lyrics. Also music videos can be used to tell a story. Mainly artists use music videos to promote their up coming albums or singles. Music videos can be used at the artists benefit because a good music videos stick in people’s minds causing them to buy the track behind the video. I myself have found myself buying tracks that I would never normally listen to just because I enjoyed the music video. Music are also used by artists to set a sort of image for themselves. Some artists who use music videos to create an image would be Lady Gaga, David Bowie and Madonna.Madonna is very well known for this as most of her music videos include her and throughout the camera is faced upon her and the lyrics usually match what she participates in therefore Madonna’s antics within these videos give her the image that she strides to set.

In the early 1980’s the first music video was made and it was aired onto the first 24 hour Music video channel which we all know now as MTV.This music video was created by The Buggles and the video was for the track “Video Killed The Radio Star.” This was a huge innovation because this video had special effects and different camera angles throughout. At the time these effects were top class but now that we have better technology we would have different opinions. From here onwards all artists wanted their fair share of these new creations. All these music videos where viewed on channels such as MTV.

Since then our music industry has grown and we can now view music videos on our smartphones and tablets through sites such as YouTube and channels within YouTube such as Vevo. YouTube and Vevo are paired together and they work with artists and they help them to get their music videos through to the world.

Artists also use synergy to promote themselves. This is when an artist records or produces something that they wish to promote. The film industry likes to partner with artists and take part in synergy. Disney does this quite often and they have done it a few times. One of the most well-known examples would be when they used Elton john on The Lion King sound track and also had him use shots of the film within the music video.Elton John-(Can You Feel The Love Tonight)

Some companies also like to use music videos to promote their products. An example of this would be in the music video “We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus. In this video we can see the use of the popular lip balm “eos”.
