US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS CONANT BROOK DAM AREA

Conant Brook Dam AreaConant Brook is a small stream flowing into Chicopee Brook which in turn flows into the Connecticut River. The outlet for the dam is a 405-foot long, 36-inch diameter, reinforced concrete pipe. Under flood conditions, this pipe will only allow the normal flow rate of 225 feet per second, while holding back storm water. This floods the Conant Brook Area and in turn does not allow flooding to occur in Monson, Palmer and Three Rivers.

The largest flood on record in the lower Connecticut river basin, which includes Conant Brook, occurred in August of 1955. The August flood resulted from record rainfall accompanying “Hurricane Diane.” This rain fell on ground previously saturated by “Hurricane Connie.” The rainfall over the Conant Brook watershed was estimated to be 13.5 inches, which caused about $7,500,000 in damages in the Chicopee River watershed.

Recreation at Conant Brook Dam AreaConant Brook offers a wide array of trails for outdoor recreational purposes. They are great for hiking or a leisurely stroll through nature. Several trails have been modified to best suit equestrian groups. During the winter, cross country skiing and snowshoeing is encouraged. Hunting is allowed throughout the property during the proper seasons.

Conant Brook Dam Area Rules1. All dogs must be picked up after and on a 6 foot leash.

2. All trash is carry in-carry out.

3. Alcohol is permitted throughout the park, but keg beer is strictly prohibited. Please drink responsibly.

4. No fires are permitted.

5. Drive with care, travel at the posted speed limit, and be mindful of other people.

6. Off-road vehicles are not allowed.

7. Please report any disturbances, vandalism, or loss of property to Park Rangers at the East Brimfield Dam Office.
