Admissions Procedures Regarding Qualified Applicants

• Students are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis after successful completion of eligibility requirements, to

include meeting with the Director of the Emergency Medical Science program. The first thirty (30) qualified applicants will be admitted to the Fall 2019 Emergency Medical Science program.

• All other qualified candidates who apply by the deadline will be placed on an alternate list in the order in which

they apply. Should any of the originally accepted candidates be unable to enter the program, alternates will be selected to take their places in the order in which they applied. If alternates apply on the same date, then the time the eligibility application was completed will be used to determine which alternate is admitted first.

• Students accepted to the program must submit a completed Student Medical Form to the Director of the

Emergency Medical Science program by October 1, 2019, and purchase a vaccination tracker through CastleBranch.com by August 31, 2019.

• Students assigned to approved clinical practicum sites will be required to undergo drug testing and complete a

criminal background check, both through CastleBranch.com, no more than 30 days prior to beginning clinical rotations. A positive finding on the drug screen or the results of the criminal background check may prevent the student from continuing in the program. The decision will be made by clinical agency representatives. Special Note: If you have any questions regarding the submission of the Student Medical Form, criminal background check or drug screening, or how the submission of these documents may affect your progression in the program, please contact Ms. Wendi Tabor (Director, Emergency Medical Science) at (910) 938-6758 prior to enrollment.

• Students are required to purchase Platinum Planner and EMS Testing at the beginning of the first semester of the

EMS program. Costs are calculated annually by the company.

• Students not admitted to the Emergency Medical Science program must reapply if they wish to be considered for a future class.

Notes

• Students accepted to the Emergency Medical Science program must attend an orientation in July. They will register for Fall classes at that time.

• Any student who already has a current Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) credential and wishes to challenge

EMS 110 will be required to pass a written EMT evaluation and pass a medical and trauma Technical Scope of Practice (TSOP) on the first attempt prior to the beginning of the Fall 2019 semester. He/she will also be required to register and pay for the EMS 110 class for the Fall 2019 semester. Interested students will need to contact the Director of the EMS program for additional information regarding receiving credit by exam for EMS 110.

• Students are strongly advised to make photocopies of their completed Student Medical Form for their own

records.

• Students admitted to the Emergency Medical Science program need to be aware of the importance of regular class attendance in order to be successful in their classes. It is vital to have child care arrangements worked out in advance in case of children’s illnesses, teacher work days, etc. If excess absences are accumulated, the student will be dropped from the program in accordance with the attendance policy in the College Catalog.

• Students must adhere to all clinical site requirements, including dress code, hygiene, and piercing/tattoo

regulations.

• Students are strongly advised to limit the number of hours they are employed in order to maximize their potential for academic success in the Emergency Medical Science program.

Communicable Disease Statement Students enrolled in the Emergency Medical Science program are at risk of exposure to blood and body fluids, and the potential does exist for transmission of bloodborne and other infectious diseases during patient care activities. The Americans with Disabilities Act forbids discrimination against patients with HIV; therefore, students are required to treat all patients assigned, regardless of the disease state of the patient. Refusal to treat any patient may affect the student’s academic progress. Students who enter the Emergency Medical Science program will be required to read and sign a communicable disease statement and waiver of liability form. This form will become a part of the student’s permanent record and will state that the student:

1. Has been informed of his/her risk for exposure to blood and body fluids. 2. Understands the potential for transmission of bloodborne diseases during patient care activities. 3. Agrees to care for all patients that are assigned to him/her.

The student and a witness must sign the communicable disease statement. Students who are minors must have the statement signed by a parent or legal guardian. A copy of the complete Communicable Disease Statement is available in the Program Manual. Accepted candidates testing positive for HIV must notify the following:

Chief, Communicable Disease Control Branch 1902 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-1902
