HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL SPILL OR LEAK
INITIAL RESPONSE
• WARN others in area of spill or leak • IDENTIFY spilled chemical, if safe to do so • EVACUATE room or area if necessary • If serious injuries have occurred, CALL 911 - direct them to the scene of the
occurrence • CALL CAMPUS SECURITY: 585-4999 • REMAIN in or near area to warn others away and assist emergency personnel
CAMPUS SECURITY WILL:
• OBTAIN pertinent information, including:
o Exact location of spill or leak o Quantity of spilled material o Identity of chemical, if known
• ESTABLISH location where caller can meet response team • DETERMINE if injury or loss of life has occurred; if so verify 911 has been called or
call 911 • NOTIFY WORK CONTROL CENTRE / HEATING PLANT • ATTEND the location to:
o Secure the building or area o Provide crowd control as necessary o Provide assistance to emergency response team o Assist in locating and transporting of required test, protective and clean-up
equipment o Establish an Incident Command Post
WORK CONTROL CENTRE / HEATING PLANT WILL:
• OBTAIN pertinent information, including:
o Exact location of spill or leak o Quantity of spilled material o Identity of chemical, if known
• NOTIFY: o HazMat/Spill Response Team o Health & Safety: 585-4776/3184 o Faculty/Department/Unit lab manager

HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL SPILL OR LEAK • ALERT AS NECESSARY:
o Director, Production, Facilities Management o Building director or administrator o Building senior caretaker o Appropriate on-call trades personnel o Other personnel required
• CONTACT AS NECESSARY o Regina Fire Department: 911 o Contact Service Mechanics to arrange special ventilation as necessary o Assist in locating and transporting required test, protective and clean-up
equipment o Keep Campus Security informed
HAZMAT RESPONSE TEAM WILL:
• ARRANGE for evacuation and medical assistance of injured, if necessary • EVALUATE spill • IDENTIFY chemical if possible • ATTEMPT to stop further spillage or leakage, if safe to do so • ADVISE FACILITIES MANAGEMENT ON REQUIREMENTS FOR:
o Evacuation of building o Assistance of outside agencies o Adjustments to building ventilation o Personal protective equipment o Test equipment o Clean up equipment
HEALTH & SAFETY WILL:
• TEST and re-evaluate spill • COORDINATE or perform spill cleanup • NOTIFY as necessary:
o Sask Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment & Labour – OH&S Division 787-4496 o Sask Ministry of Environment 1-800-667-7525
• WRITE a report on the incident • MAKE recommendations as necessary
