Slovenia (Slovenija)

SUMMARY AND OVERVIEW

Slovenia declared its independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991 and became a full member of the EU in 2004 and in January 2007 adopted the Euro as its currency. Trading with Slovenian companies is therefore very straightforward with no restrictions on the flow of goods and the currency stability afforded by the Euro. Another attraction for British businesses is that English is widely spoken here. It has a population of just over 2 million and shares borders with Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia and with a 46.6km stretch of coastline on the Gulf of Trieste in the Adriatic.

Notwithstanding the global economic slowdown since around the middle of 2008 affecting all countries in the EU, Slovenia has seen rapid economic growth in the last decade and its population enjoys a very high standard of living with GDP per capita and purchasing power reaching almost 88% of the EU average. Slovenia has excellent infrastructure, a well-educated work force, and a strategic location between the Balkans and Western Europe.

Although Slovenia has only a short coastline, the marine industry and business in leisure boats is thriving. Tourism represents an important part of the economy (6% of GDP and rising) and the coastal tourism shows the strongest growth potential in the country. Although only 46.6km long Slovenia’s coastline on the Adriatic Sea has a lot of commercial and leisure marine activity. Sandwiched between the Italy and Croatia it makes a popular tourist destination and natural starting point for yachting expeditions in the Adriatic. It helps that recreational boating is a favourite pastime of the Slovenes whose main tourist destination in the summer is the Adriatic coast. It is also popular with foreign boat owners who use the Slovenian coast as a starting point for their nautical holidays on the Adriatic; among them Germans, Italians, Austrians, Swedes, Dutch and Brits. The climate on the Slovenian coast is Mediterranean which means that the high nautical season is very long: from April to October.

Slovenia has three marinas and a surprising amount of activity in the leisure marine sector considering the size of its population and short coastline. This means that it offers good opportunities for British exporters who want to take advantage of its strategic location and ease of business interaction. Although the potential level of exports will never match many of its larger EU neighbours, the lack of barriers to entry into this market make it well worth exploring. Many of the companies servicing the Slovenian market also service Croatia and other Balkan countries such as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro all with growing leisure marine sectors, meaning that a Slovenian partner might be sufficient to cover the whole region, depending on the goods and service on offer. The market is served by a very good and popular annual boat show at Marina Portoroz and another at Marina Izola, the former certainly worth a visit by anyone wishing to make contacts and enter this market.

Due to the proximity of the market, many brands are represented through Croatian or even Italian distributors. However, there are still a number of professional and pro-active distributors in Slovenia. Due to the size of the market and the geography some brands are represented on the market through retail stores rather than distributors.

PORTS, HARBOURS & MARINAS

There are three marinas in Slovenia: Portoroz, Izola and Koper with a total of 1,800 berths. A major problem in Slovenia, like many places, is the lack of marina berths. There are approximately 900 new berths planned in all three marinas throughout 2009/ 2010, although some development has slowed due to the current economic climate.
