Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that November is here! It is such a beautiful yet hectic time

of year. The beauty of the season is truly around us. One of the huge advantages

of my commute, has been the colors and breathtaking landscape that identifies the

Mondanock Region – another thing to CELEBRATE!

November is time for reading a story! Want to spend with your child, build their

reading skill, while helping them love books? You can do all three when you read

aloud! Here are some suggestions/

Read regularly: Try to read to your child everyday about 10-15 before bed each

night; providing them with a peaceful end to the day. Bring a book along to sporting

event and read while their siblings are practicing. Curl up together with a book

when you get home from work.

Take turns choosing a book: Children may want to hear old favorites again and

again. Use your turn for new titles and variety (nonfiction, poetry).

Let them participate: Ask your child to turn the pages while you read. Also, they

can finish sentences that rhyme or fill in words that they know. Go slowly so that

the children have time to understand the story and look at the illustrations. They

will enjoy read-aloud time more if they can have an active role.

Be playful: You can use different voices to describe the different voices of the

various characters (a high, squeaky voice for a mouse, or a deep booming voice for

a horse. Children also hearing their names included in stories. Take the liberty to

replace a character’s name with your child’s name and watch their smile!

November is filled with many exciting school events, days off, and schedule chang-

es. Please be sure to check out this newsletter for important notices and details!

As the month progresses, please take time to enjoy family and friends as the holi-

day season begins.

Best Wishes for a pleasant holiday season,

News From the Nurse Can you believe cold and flu season is up on us already? The students here at Emerson have already been experi-

encing a variety of colds and some with stomach aches. Because of that, I just want to remind you of a couple of our

guidelines from the Parent Handbook (available online on the Emerson webpage under the parents section).

Medications, including cough drops, nasal spray, and antacids, must be brought to school by the parent and in the

original container. The school provides Tums, cough drops, Tylenol, and ibuprofen, so there is no need to send any of

these. A parent permission form must be signed for any over the counter medications not listed on the health form. A par-

ent permission form and doctors order are needed for any prescription. The medication bottle does not count. Please do

not send medicine to school with your child. All medicine must be brought to school by the parent and in the original con-

tainer. The school cannot store more than a 30 day supply of prescription medication. Orders can be faxed to the school at

1-603-719-0983.

A child should be kept home if s/he has a temperature of 100˚ or higher, has had diarrhea and/or vomiting within

the last 24hrs, sore throat, ear ache, cough or cold, upset stomach, or skin rash or if s/he cannot participate in all the

school activities, including recess, straight from the parent handbook.

If your child has an orthopedic issue requiring a cast or splint, please let the nurse know. A doctor order will be

needed to let us know what your child is able to participate in for physical education and recess. Once these have been

removed, we will need clearance from your doctor allowing your child to participate freely.

Please keep the health office update to changes of medication or health concerns. Should your child have an

emergency requiring us to call 911, it is in their best interest if we have up to date information to provide them with. With

that in mind, keeping your phone numbers updated is also important so that we can contact you if your child is ill, or

sometimes just to notify you that your child saw the nurse today.

If you have any questions you can contact me in the health office at 585-6611 between 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. I can

also be reached by email at [email protected]. I am so glad we can all work together to make sure we have healthy stu-

dents!

Is it Bullying?

Or something else?

If you are being hurt in any way and you can’t solve the problem yourself, tell your teacher or someone at school what is happening to you. We can’t help anyone fix some-

thing we don’t know about.

TEASING

Teasing can happen to everyone

May be intended as a joke Can hurt someone deeply

If words hurt, let the teaser know

CONFLICT

Can happen in the heat of the moment There might be a solution to the disagreement Equal balance of power

Individuals accept responsibility

MEAN

Someone is being hurt on purpose

Individuals may show strong reactions to their feelings or emotions The person who is mean, usually regrets his/her actions

BULLYING

Attacking physically, socially or emotionally There is an unequal balance of power Usually happens repeatedly

Someone is being hurt on purpose

Is it bullying or something else?

By Diane Hardy, School Counselor October 24, 2017

As educators we witness the day to day developmental interactions of children ages 3 - 12. Some of our students come from homes where they are the “only” child, while others come from larger fami-lies. At home, children learn and are taught about their behaviors, about communication, all while simultaneously developing and honing coping skills. In the educational system, it is our job to teach and prepare all students to behave appropriately in public settings. I feel some of this has been lost along the way; it seems that we have forgotten how we should behave in public and how to get along with others. Sometimes the “It’s All About Me” mentality creates chaos in many settings. Are we im-portant as individuals? Absolutely, but we have to learn and demonstrate tolerance, acceptance and empathy.

Teachers expect to continuously teach appropriate communication skills to every student sent to our schools. We help students work on their friendship skills. We teach children the important skills for working with everyone while utilizing our kindness skills as we interact. We teach them to use their own powers to walk away from students who are unkind, mean or hurtful. We teach them to always keep their hands to themselves and ask for an adult to help in solving difficult issues.

We need the help of every parent and guardian who sends children to our school. We need you to expect your child, in this public space, to follow the rules of good citizenry. Within this public school setting, we expect the same behavior from every member of our community. We are working to teach appropriate communication and interaction skills in a developmental way as our students grow and mature. While children learn through play, our school days can’t be completely structured around play. During our school days there are many moments when we need to work independently without interrupting others learning. Learning times are appropriately balanced with down time, re-cess time, and movement breaks.

Cruel, unkind, hurtful bullying does happen especially in texts and emails. I feel the word bullying is too often used incorrectly. While bullying is most often a repeated, intentional, power based behav-ior, most times, children’s inappropriate interactions are the result of unpracticed, awkward, clumsy, uninformed childhood interaction. Children learn as they grow. They will make mistakes when using words that might hurt others’ feelings. They will attempt to joke with their friends and say something that may hurt their friend deeply and not even understand why. Children can be mean. Children can be unkind.. If we work to be role models, accept that failure will happen, and plan to always reteach kindness as often as possible, our school will be a great public setting for all who enter its doors.

I am including with this article a chart to think about. I have compiled my chart by utilizing many sources. Maybe this can start a discussion at your home concerning school or public behavior.

We all need to be kind. Use our manners. Care for each other. Consider what we intend to say to one another and sometimes keep those thoughts to ourselves.

EMERSON’S 4TH GRADE EAGLES

The 4th grade started this year with a Plants and Trees Science unit. We

explored, investigated and recreated many different plants and trees. We

learned the cycle of life for plants from seeds to decomposition. The stu-

dents made tree identification books, and created a skit to demonstrate all

of the layers and parts of a tree. We had fun learning how to say words like

phloem, cambium and photosynthesis. We are looking forward to watching

the plants and trees prepare for winter, and can’t wait for them to wake in

the spring!

Spreading Kindness

Written by Sydney, Liana and Felicity

Throughout these past few weeks, the 5th and 6th grade team has been working on spreading kindness. Ms. Tolman’s class has also joined a competition with many other classes throughout the United States, in-spired by the hit book and new movie Wonder. This contest has spread kindness far and wide. For example, one activity we are working on is that we have a jar with “Cool to be Kind” slips next to it. The “Cool to be Kind” slips are filled out by someone on the team, students or teachers, for another student or teacher in the class that has done a very kind thing. Can you spread kindness in your community? We challenge you to spread kindness.

Attention Parents,

This year we’ve started a whole new process with lunch bills. You will only be getting one (1) bill a month in the mail; no longer on a weekly basis. If you have questions or concerns about whether you have a bill, you can call the school at 585-6611 or email me at [email protected]. Thanks, Melanie Doyle

End of Day Reminders

If you are picking your child up as a walker or after 3:10 you must pick them up at

the door by the multi-purpose room and sign them out with Mrs. Wharton. This is

for the safety of your child. Also, if you are going to be making any changes for

the end of the day, this must be done before 2:30 to prevent anyone from being

left out and not notified. Sending in a note with your child or emailing me at

[email protected] before 2:30 will work, as well. The end of the day gets very

busy and we want to ensure that everyone gets to where they need to be safely.

Important Reminders

Please note that students cannot be dropped off until

8:20. If there is a 2 hour delay, students cannot be

dropped off until 10:20.

When there is a 2 hour delay, breakfast and snacks bags

are not available so please be sure that your child eats

before coming to school.

In the morning students are to be dropped off at the

foyer area. Parents are not to walk students to their

classrooms as this is disruptive.

If your child is going to be late or absent, it is school poli-

cy that you call the school to let us know. Prior to school

being open, please leave a message on the answering ma-

chine. This is especially important in inclement weather.

During walker sign outs, parents are not allowed to go

to their child’s classroom. If you need to talk to your

child’s teacher, please make an appointment with the

teacher, email or call.

All these reminders are for the safety of

your child and the other students in the

building. Your cooperation in following these

rules/policies would be greatly appreciated.
