The DecemberistsThe King Is DeadThe Decemberists have announced a January 18, 2011 release date or their new

album The King Is Dead (Capitol Records, EMI). The albuma set o 10 concise

songsmarks a deliberate turn towards simplicity ater the bands wildly ambi-

tious and widely acclaimed 2009 song-cycle The Hazards o Love. Produced onceagain by Tucker Martine, The King Is Dead eatures special guest appearances by

Americana luminary Gillian Welch on seven tracks and legendary R.E.M. guitaristPeter Buck on three tracks.

The King Is Dead showcases the ways in which The Decemberists sound justas glorious in simple, stripped-down compositions as they do on the elaborate

structures that have dened their work or years. For all my talk about how

complex those records were, this one may have been harder to do, he says. Itsa real challenge to make simple music, and lot o times we had to deliberately

hold o and keep more space. This record is an exercise in restraint.

To Meloy, in some ways The King Is Dead also represents his own musicaljourney coming ull circle. Over the last eleven years Ive been mining mostly

English traditions or infuence, he says. I guess Ive kind o come back to a

lot o the more American music that got me going in the rst place R.E.M. andCamper Van Beethoven and all these bands that borrowed rom more American

traditions like Neil Young and the Byrds.

Sometimes I kind o miss the epic-ness o the other albums, he continues, but

its nice to get all o the inormation across in three minutes. Its like going rom
