Principal’s Comment

Ko te mura o te ahi!The heat of the battle!

It has been a huge week for both Junior and Senior Kapa Haka, as well as the Senior Pasifika Group. The Junior Kapa Haka performed twice this week at the 10th Murihiku Polyfest with a very polished display of Māori performing arts discipline. The Pasifika Group lifted the roof of the ILT stadium with a highly energetic and emphatic performance led by year 13 Lupe Taufa. A huge shout out to the Taufa kāinga for all your support and hard work. Our Senior Kapa Haka started the week with the biennial

Secondary School Kapa Haka Competition where Kaytlin Tomlins won, deservedly, the Kaitoa (1st) Kaitataki Wahine (Female Group Leader). After this they performed an entertaining bracket during the day at Polyfest, completing the week with a solid and uplifting performance of their competition bracket on Thursday night. A huge thank you to all who have assisted our groups over the past many months. Without you it would not be what it is.

Lockdowns and MeaslesWe have listened carefully to the learnings of CHCH schools following the tragedy earlier this year, with particular reference to the realities of “Lockdown” procedures. Some Christchurch schools have also had genuine lockdowns for other unrelated reasons since. This has led us to review our procedures - and key equipment to be provided in every classroom. (Thanks to the PTA for assistance with this!) Sadly, the need for such preparations is clearly greater in this day and age, and it behoves us to carry out drills, and know what to do.Every emergency situation is different however, and planning has to be generic based on expected scenarios, which may or may not turn out as expected. One of the problems experienced by CHCH schools however, was that of parents turning up at school to collect their children while the school was in lockdown. This clearly compromised the integrity of the safety of everyone, and in some cases, police were

asked to assist schools with this issue. If Hargest is “Locked Down”, please do not come to the school to uplift your children! Speaking of emergencies, the measles outbreak in Auckland is another example of schools having to make critical decisions carefully but nimbly. NZ is small and people are very mobile, so we suggest you check your child’s measles vaccination, and if necessary, arrange a visit to the doctor with some urgency. These things don’t always happen “somewhere else”!

The Board met our new Head of Special Needs (The Student Support Centre), Mr Richardson, and were updated on the issues, successes and challenges of this very special part of the Hargest programme. We considered a report from the principal on the current information about the national Review of NCEA; the Review of Tomorrows’ Schools; and the government’s new scheme for providing extra support to schools for helping with learning and behaviour needs. (Learning Support Coordinators). Unfortunately Hargest will not benefit at all for the forseeable future, in relation to 600 new positions being funded nationally. The Ministry of Education is assessing the merits of a re-development of parts of the

Hargest Senior Campus site. We do not expect to find out what the scope of work will be until the end of this year. However, preliminary work is proceeding on the replacement of the heating boilers for both campuses. The school has been congratulated by the Ministry for the quality of its programmes in relation to the provision of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) for migrant and refugee students. This area is ably led by the Head of ESOL, Mrs Marion Elder.

Staff Welcome

Chrissie Bakker The Health and PE Department welcome Mrs Bakker. She steps into the role vacated by Mr Jackson. Mrs Bakker started teaching PE and Dance at Southland Girls High School before teaching PE and Dance at Long Bay College and Alfriston College in Auckland. She has also taught PE and swimming in Azerbaijan.

Hello to all! The July PTA meeting saw a great turnout. We had a report from Senior and Junior campus who have had another busy term so far, with the Sport and Rec segment, Ball extravaganza, Student exchanges, Production, two choirs at the Big Sing, Science Competition, to name a few. The PTA gave approval for funding of Lock Down Kits for the school, as part of their Disaster recovery process and procedures, or Lock Down Preparedness. We had an update on the Bus Shelter Project, and had the opportunity to provide feedback and discussion around the Sport and Rec programme from a parents point of view, and also a Q & A session on parental understanding of the Form Class Structure. I mention these items, as the PTA meetings are not for cheese rolls fundraisers, but a great place for feedback loops, hearing from the Senior Leadership teams, at Senior and Junior Campus, as well as meeting other parents/caregivers. So feel free to join us for

any of the PTA meetings listed below. The PTA hosted the Open Day BBQ at Junior Campus. As always this was a busy day for all the teachers and students in attendance, and there was a great turn out of excited potential year 7’s for next year. A BIG thanks to the PTA helpers on the day, it was greatly appreciated. Time flew by and 500 sausages later, we were done for the day - needless to say we didn’t have sausages for dinner that night!!

The schedule for the 2019 meetings are as follows, we welcome you to attend the next PTA on 17th Sept 2019. It was agreed that future PTA meetings would be held in “The Brig” (above the foyer) at Senior Campus – all are scheduled to start at 7.30pm. September 17th November 19th Monique ShirleyChairperson

Speech Finals Junior Campus

EiS Technology Challenge Junior Campus

Last week several schools from throughout Southland had teams entered in the EiS Technology Challenge. The Junior Campus had two teams entered in the Yr 7-8 competition. The teams had two challenges to complete. The first was to make a catapult to launch a table tennis ball into the air as high as possible. The second challenge was to make a shovel that could be used to shift a pile of sand from one place to another.

Recently we held our Year 7 and 8 speech finals at the Junior Campus. All of our students, as part of their classroom programme, presented a speech to their class. Two students were then selected from each class to compete in a syndicate final. Following the two syndicate finals the top 10 at each year level were selected for a Year Level final. Thank you to all the judges that gave up their time to judge both syndicate and year level finals. In our game the character is a backpacker travelling through a forest. The forest is being polluted by a local factory. At this level the character has to defeat the factory owner who makes pollution clouds you have to avoid so you don’t lose power. In this picture there is a drinking potion to help power up and a jetpack to help get around faster (Soyul, room 6)

Tahi Rua Toru Tech ChallengeJunior Campus

Room 6 and Room 1 are taking part in the Tahi Rura Toru Tech Challenge. The competition is supported by the Ministry of Education and the IT industry as an introduction to the new Digital Technologies & Hangarau Matihiko curriculum into schools. The competition involves small teams of 3-4 students completing a project-based challenge which solves a problem in their local school or community using digital technologies – and having fun along the way! The competition helps students work through the entire process of problem solving. In a digital tech context this includes defining a problem, experimenting on possible solutions, taking guidance from industry mentors, creating a solution and reflecting on it.

This is one of the coins you collect in our game. The coin is bright and shiny with different coloured gems. You will find these coins at the end of each level. The game is about air pollution and the coins are colourful so they stand out (Nirvana, room 6)

This character’s name is ‘Pollution Cloud’. He is an enemy in the game. He will attack the player and spit pollution at them. Better get him quick! (Ethan, room 6

This character’s name is ‘The Boss’. He is the final enemy faced in the game. In the game he is polluting the ocean and the land and needs to be stopped! (Ethan, room 6)

This the building where all the trash comes from in our game (Connor, room 6).

Our problem is that children don’t know enough about sustainable practices. Our solution is to make a game using the ipad app Bloxels that teaches about an aspect of sustainability. Each team has chosen their own lesson(s) and use the game to teach it, examples are; putting rubbish in the bin, turning off the tap when you clean your teeth and travelling through polluted environments to reach a sustainability house.

was one of the season highlights is an understatement. Going down by a try in the first 5 minutes, wasn’t the ideal start. However, this was quickly remedied by the team scoring the next nine tries, coming out the victors 62-14 to the delight of all.

And the season is not yet over for Jacob Mika (U16), James Billows (U18) and Mitchell Tinnock (U18). Immense congratulations to these players who have been selected in their respective Southland Age Group Representative Squads. They have inter-provincial games and South Island tournament along with many more training sessions to look forward to.

All the teams appreciate and thank their coaches, managers and supporters. Some of the weather this year tested the weather tightness of jackets and umbrellas, but the supporters supported come rain, hail or shine.

A great bunch of people having fun in rugby. It doesn’t get better than that..

Rugby

They say in sport that “It was a game of two halves”. In so many ways, this has been a season of two halves for the boy’s rugby teams at James Hargest.

The Under 14 team got together early in the season and crafted the team rules. It was important to the team, coaches, manager and parents to have a strong culture and a set of values as a solid foundation for success. The goal for the year was to make rugby fun so that the lads want to come back and play next year. The team played 11 Southland wide games, winning seven, losing four and, finishing third in the competition, as well as winning the inter-school game against Taieri.

The boys should be very proud of the way they improved during the season and the results they achieved. The coaching and management team is most proud of the way the team lived the rules they set and the culture that they developed.

With the efforts of many, a combined Hargest/Verdon/Aurora/Te Wharekura Under 17 team was created this year so that the players who wanted to play rugby could - despite each school not having sufficient for their own team. This team won one of their first five games. As the players learnt more, including about each other, they became a united unified team and went on to win 5 of the next 7 to make the Southland Under 17 final, where they lost narrowly to Central Southland out at Winton.

The 1st XV had some close games during the round robin component but did not notch up a single win. A long-planned team-building trip to a tournament on the Gold Coast of Australia really did turn the season around. On their return, the band of brothers with their newfound complete trust, belief and heart won 3 of the 4 games played, including the semi final, and the inter-school at Taieri. The game that they lost 31-10 turned out to be the team that they would play in the Southland U18 Plate final - SBHS Development. To say that the game

Oamaru Intermediate School Exchange South Island Secondary Schools Championships

On Wednesday 7 August, 85 JHC students and accompanying staff set off to attend the annual interschool sports exchange between Oamaru Intermediate School and James Hargest College. This event is always a highlight of the school year and 2019’s exchange was no exception. The majority of JHC students were billeted with generous host families from Oamaru. Our students were welcomed into their hosts’ homes with open arms and have established lasting connections with their new Oamaru friends. The exchange started with volleyball and basketball on the Wednesday evening. JHC were dominant in the girls’ basketball winning 54 - 6. However it was Oamaru who had the edge at the end of the night with wins in the volleyball and boys’ basketball. The following day was full of sporting action, culminating with JHC victories in the football, hockey and rugby on Thursday afternoon. It was extremely satisfying to see the rugby team put on a performance to be proud of, securing a very rare win; 52 - 31 (Kobe Rooney scoring 47 of the team’s points was an

impressive feat)! Despite the late run of wins on Thursday, it was Oamaru who secured the exchange shield for the year, winning eight events to JHC’s seven. While the result was unfortunate (and made for a slightly quieter return journey home), we were very proud of our students’ efforts and the spirit in which they played their games. The lasting friendships established ensured the exchange was a positive experience and a success for all students.ResultsVolleyball: 2- 0 (OIS)Girls’s Basketball: 54 - 6 (JHC)Boys’ Basketball: 45 - 40 (OIS)Swimming: 41 - 37 (OIS)Badminton: 9 - 3 (JHC)Table Tennis: 18 - 4 (JHC)Chess: 11 - 5 (JHC)Boys’ Harriers: 6 - 5 (OIS)Girls’ Harriers: 8 - 4 (OIS)Touch: 6 - 2 (OIS)Year 7 Netball: (OIS)Year 8 Netball: 44 - 9 (OIS)Football 7 - 3 (JHC)Hockey 11 - 0 (JHC)Rugby: 52 - 31 (JHC)Overall Result: Oamaru won 8 - 7

Books Alive Festival

Last week, a group of enthusiastic readers travelled to Dunedin to participate in the Books Alive festival. The students were able to attend reading and writing workshops with two shortlisted authors in the New Zealand Book Awards - Young Adults section, Rachel Craw and Eileen Merriman. These were both very valuable and inspirational events. Thanks to the Dunedin Public Library and the New Zealand Book Awards Trust for inviting us.

Human Machine Unit Year 7

Over the term our Year 7 classes are working on developing their awareness of how our human body works and is kept healthy. Many classes can be seen out and about working on their fitness; with daily workout routines

happening in many classes that students have developed themselves. Other elements integrated into this unit include: our Life Education sessions, Pubertal Change and Anatomy units. Many students are also looking at overall well-being (hauora) incorporating elements of social, emotional, spiritual and physical health.Students in Room 5 have been looking at developing our mental

well-being through learning and developing mastery in a variety of contexts, focusing on areas of interest. This has included some students working on developing their digital coding skills (using Scratch), others improving their flexibility and skill in gymnastics and still others working on drawing or instrumentation skills. There are many different areas we will continue to grow our knowledge and practical abilities in over the term.

We strongly recommend that all students from year 7 - 12 are equipped with a personal device next year. Since introducing 1:1 device use with a pilot class 4 years ago, we have been ‘rolling up’ a 1:1 device learning environment year by year. During this time the school has transformed many of its other systems to digital platforms. Students in all year 7-11 classes this year now routinely use access to their school digital platform (Google for Education) for their normal work. Device use is about ‘which technology is best’ - device or paper and pen, and often this means using both at once. Next year we continue rolling up this process. It is important that we prepare students for their future, not our past!

Which Device? As a school, we are comfortable for students to bring their preferred device to school. We do not advocate one device over another. Students typically use a range of devices including iPads, Laptops,

chrome books and tablets. As a primary device we recommend the following minimum specifications:• Minimum screen size of 7 inches

(minimum usable resolution of 1024 x 600)

• Running iOS11.0+, or Android 6.0+, Mac OSX 10.11+ (El Capitan) or Windows 10

• Battery life of 5-6 hours• Wireless Capability• Minimum storage for tablets of 32GB

(due to the increasing size of apps)• Google Chrome installed (Google

Cloud Print is used for printing from student devices)

• Protective case strongly recommended• Bluetooth keyboard or keyboard/

tablet case combination is recommended, particularly for smaller tablets less than 9” e.g ipad mini

We recommend buying a device that is or can be updated to the latest operating system as this will give the device a longer life and allow newly introduced apps to be used.

Medical CertificatesSenior Campus

If your child is absent for more than three days due to illness, a medical certificate may be required. There is a high level of correlation between attendance and academic achievement. We need students to be in class whenever possible.

A reminder to students to come to the office and sign out if you are leaving during the school day. Parents/caregivers are to come into the office to collect you and are not to go directly to the classroom. If you are returning later please come back through the office and sign back in.Please note that classes start at 8:50am and students are to be in class by that time. If students come in late, they are to go to the office before going to class to have their names deleted from the absence list.
